For those who didn't get the transparent effect, you have to turn on 'refraction' under screen space reflections in the render tab. :) Thanks blender binge for this beautiful tutorial. this was very helpful for me.
Yes Please!! Make as many of these as you can! This works so well with your DNA tut...and I could see swapping out skulls for cells using that sick spiral tut...ideas are poppin' right now!
I just love the way you explain things. Very clear and simple Thank you for the amazing content, definitely learned a lot from you. And can you please upload something about game assets creation and workflow (preferably something complex) but it’s your decision really lol Thanks again.
Thanks for the kind words! I can certainly do something complex and have some videos lined up. I have a list of ones I’m getting to in order. Stay tuned... 😀

Thanks again. You make it easy , fun with a great result. I like the way you are going to the inner universe (DNA and stem cells) unlike most blender geeks who seem hell bent on getting to the planets...unique and awesome!
Your commentary is cracking me up. My sister is a ChemE and asked me to make a cover image for her latest research paper. A: I'd be lost without you and B: thanks for the laughs too!
@@TeenstarletsInfo2015 because the subdivided cube has much better topology then a Sphere. With a sphere you’ll notice that the top and bottom have fans. Fans aren’t really the best for topology and since it would probably take longer to manually fix it then to just use a subdivided cube. As it is all made up of quads, thus requiring no retopo.
I wasn’t getting the refraction without it in EEVEE. Maybe I need to check my settings. I’ll check it out. Thanks for bringing that up. If it’s on my end I’ll definitely modify my videos going forward.
@@KevBinge Maybe the problem were that you also needed to activate SS Refraction in the render pannel... But in this case, you don't need refraction and u don't have an alpha (so Alpha Clip is useless). Instead of SS Refraction, just set blend as Adictive and put base color as gray.
I’ve used additive before but didn’t like the outcome for a few things (it worked well in the wormhole video). I’ll have to play around more. I’ve cut stuff out of EEVEE for comp, but have been doing all of my tutorials with everything “in camera.” In that case, yeah, I don’t need alpha channels or combining clip with ss refraction.. Additive could work, but it hasn’t been “doing it” for me. Getting the look in this new renderer, even if it technically doesn’t make sense or is overkill gets me to a point where I’m satisfied. For me, if it looks right and works for a certain look, I really don’t care about technicalities until they get in the way of the shot. If I’m on a team and sharing the files with others, totally different story. That said, I want to teach things correctly, so I’ll have to do a video on the differences and what you get with additive vs. clip more in depth than I did in the wormhole vid. Another caveat that I ignore in this video is the fact that ss refraction and ss reflection and ao don’t play well with each other. The look is cool, but could break down in animation. For this still image, it looks ok, but I should have added that warning. I learn.... thanks!
Thanks! I’m kevbingecg on there. I’ve only posted mostly things related to this account so far but will be posting more and more beyond the YT channel.
this is my third year with blender and i have never used the blender textures as a world background. Thank you very much for the hint. I checked it again, it would have been possible with 2.79. I just was not smart enough to get that idea :-). Thank you for share
That’s cool! I’ve used Maya for 15 years and every month there would be something I’d learn that I’d overlooked. Welcome to 3D hahahaha!! I’m happy to help!!
When I get to the world shade editor portion, my cell just gets so dark even after the addition of the multiple lights. Any advice? Also for Voronoi texture, it no longer has the Fac option so I connected distance to Fac on the color ramp with similar results :D
It’s not meant for accuracy just stylization. I’d forgotten about this video, I should do an accurate one but unless it’s entertainment, no one would watch it lol.
@@galaxydeathskrill5607 -- I assigned the material wrong, and then, "Refraction" was unchecked for me, in the Render > Screen Space Reflections twirldown...
This was good. Thanks for sharing. Do you know if possible to 'bake' a procedurally defined world background into a 'environment texture' -- thinking in terms of creating cool procedural backgrounds that might be used in games
Thanks! That’s a great question. I have a few ideas for that in 2.8 but need to test them. I’ll get back to you in a day or so as I’m not in a computer at the moment.
Thanks! It wouldn’t be too hard at all if you parent them together and move them. You’d want to keep “local” displacement on for them and maybe give each one a slight variance, but yeah, Not too difficult. 😀
@@KevBinge burning the midnight oil?! I have to thank you for getting me out of a bind with Blender many a time. Keep up the awesome tutorials. Have you messed around with the boids in the particle system? I'm trying to do a loop but haven't figured it out.
Yes, I’m burning the midnight oil (not the band) haha. I have played with boids but not too much in 2.8. I’m pretty sure it’s the same as 2.79 though, and they flock. Particles are awesome! Looping is a bit tough but not impossible. I’ll experiment 😎
@@KevBinge that would be awesome. I always find ways to take things to the limit, and not intentionally. It's just that the boids movement looks so cool, so organic. keep rocking
awesome .. on a separate note for a new user your channel's homepage shows only old videos with outdated thumbnails, uploads and popular videos list is disabled.
Yo just wanted to say I've been watching and using your tuts as inspiration for me to get around to doing things for a while now. They help motivate me to just do any kind of creative work, and the prospect of learning all the niche features of blender that you often cover is just great for that. - burnt out environment artist
That’s great to hear! I got burned out on Maya as a generalist for 13 years. I was using Houdini and love it, but had a whole lot of fun with Blender and thought I could teach it, so I started this channel. I know the burnout feeling, so I’m glad this helps a bit!
I followed your instruction and got a fantastic result! Now I wonder if it is possible to cut the membrane in half (make it like showing the nucleus inside. I watched several tutorials but was not able to achieve the cutting. If you can guide me, I will be super appreciated. BTW, I subscribed!
Sure! Thanks! You can take the membrane, freeze it as in apply all modifiers, then either use a Boolean operation on it, or manually delete half of it and manually connect the faces on the cut edges if it shows. Does that help?
@@KevBinge, I am sure it will be helpful. For the moment, I am a total newbie on Blender. It took me one whole day to finally have the stem cell image. When I understand Blender better, I will get back to your reply, and I will know how to test it. Thank you!
My membrane never becomes transparent. I see an alpha setting on your's that isn't listed on mine which is below Tansmission settings. Your's show Emission and Alpha which as missing on mine.
@@KevBinge I just redownloaded the software and now I do have tge Alpha, but I get the same results. I even stopped the video and matched my setting with yours, and still there's no transparency for the membrane. I must be missing something somewhere.
You’re welcome. I need to remember what I did on this one as it was about 2 years ago now. The transparency settings still work in 3.1 but they’d moved around a bit.
Thanks! Great tutorial! I want to use an emitter with object instances with these kind of cells. What is the trick then? First I put the nucleus and the membrane in a collection, but I couldn't choose the collection. Also is it possible with instancing objects to use the global displacement? Thanks again!!!
That’s a great question. You “can” instance collections, but keeping all of the undulating particles to displace globally would be very tricky. Instances are “localized.” They will all look very similar. Until they set up the application like Houdini, this kind of thing can get very tricky. What you could do it make a number of variations, throw them in a collection, and instance that, if it makes sense?
so when I hit tab at 5:52 there's nothing happening to my nukleus, that yellowish cube zone doesn't come up and I've gone trough it a few times now trying to find any errors I did but it still doesn't want to work. I tried changing the colors but nothing was visible and I'm kinda lost now.
Hi mate thanks for this. I have an issue when importing to Unity after converting to FBX. The nucleus and the membrane kind of all merge together to look something like a brain :D Any suggestions on getting this into Unity properly ?
That’s a good question. I’d need to try myself, but baking and or applying all deformations would be ideal. You’d apply all deformation modifiers before export. You would also need to rebuild the shaders in Unity I’d imagine.
I watched part of this awesome informative and entertaining tut earlier; now to have at it. Also thinking maybe a little ovum mod, some spe ... I mean snakes from your other tut, and we have .... reproductive tuts? Keep it up!
They did it again, this time the other way 'round. Voronoi Texture in v2.81 is apparently different than Voronoi Texture in 2.8, which this tut was made with. So Factor cannot go to Factor because it ain't got one. WHY do they change stuff like this? Yep ... just opened the file in 2.8 and Voronoi T has Fac output. Grrrrr. THis is the single most frustrating aspect of Blender. Learn something and save a project file, then try that same info or project file later, and basic things go awry. For pros, no prob, right? Well for us who are not, it causes issues.
Very nice work ! I was just thinking the next thing to do would be to animate the camera moving throughout the stem cells :) I have done multi colored stem cells in mine :)
