Kneaded Eraser to keep your canvas clean. Nothing works better! Any smudges outside of the actual drawing lift out just by rolling it on or by dabbing. You’ll likely go through a bunch but you can also use old dirty ones to deposit more charcoal in different patterns. I have an old charcoal botanical drawing video where you can see me dabbing on very light texture with a dirty kneaded eraser formed around my finger tip. Charcoal is super fun mark making wise if you’re willing to experiment and get a little dirty.

This is such a good tip, thank you! I have one kneaded eraser but good to know I'll go through it (so I'll get some more). And yes, I like the mark making of charcoal. I like being a clean artist, but charcoal always shows me that I can let loose and have fun. So it's the perfect thing for me right now! (oooh, and I'll go check out your vide - thank you!)

@@jaclynbaerart It’s actually short reel. When you see me using my hands as if smudging most the times it’s me either using a kneaded eraser to deposit or lift charcoal. So I kept a “dirty” and a clean eraser. And sometimes I smudged with it creating a smoother texture insteaf of using a sponge. Play with it, it does many things! I’m glad I could help! ru-vid.comeRU2KD_jDCg?si=Fwu6Kg2SHQ8u3x7q

I’m really intrigued by using the canvas as a background. Never have thought of that. I’ll look forward to more videos showing how you go with it. I’ve done a few classes using vine and block charcoal. It’s also great for adding darker values for graphite. Thanks for sharing

I’m excited to start my art project once the canvas comes in! I’ll definitely make another video on it. And I like the idea of adding charcoal to my graphite drawings too to really get that darkness. Thank you!

We learned to sharpen charcoal pencils with a knife. It gives you more control and doesn’t break the charcoal the way a sharpener does!

I’ve thought about that too. So I’ll just try that and a sand block to get a finer tip! 🙌🏼

How dissapointing to have the wrong item in your cart. Fortunately Blick has stellar customer service, but still there is that wait time. I've found it best to work upright rather than on a horizontal surface. The charcoal won't accumulate as much, sort of like soft pastels. If you can't do that, then tape your piece to a board and gently tap the edge of the board on your table when you need to remove some excess. I've never had much luck in finding any brush soft enough to sweep anything away without disturbing my piece. But then again, I've only ever worked on paper. Maybe the charcoal will settle into the raw canvas more than it does on paper. Good luck in your experiment! Nothing like learning (or relearning) a new medium to make you feel like a novice...haha... but really, even though it can be frustrating, it is often rewarding and fun!

Yes! I will work on a tilted/upright surface to help with the falloff of the charcoal. Such a good tip thank you! And thank you for the well wishes, I do feel like a novice again, but just excited to dive back into the world of charcoal for my botanical drawings!!

Nice haul! You have to sharpen the nitram to a sharp point.

Thanks for the tip, that's really helpful! Would you suggest using the sand block to sharpen it?

Charcoal on canvas looks a lot like Chinese and Japanese art.
