Last year I got an iPad that has helped me do the lazy artist routine. Sometimes I'm too overwhelmed to open a sketchbook and draw, I worry about wasting resources but with my ipad, i can draw without any pressure to create finished pieces! Your video was really insightful, love your voice 😊
That's a great idea to use your iPad!! I have an old iPad that I like to create on, and i really like your thought process of it's not wasting resources. That's a great tip!
This is a great video to encourage creativity in such an easy way. I sketch most evenings (just graphite)while my husband watches “Gold Rush” on Discovery+ . I have cheap sketchbooks everywhere : my car, under the couch, in a kitchen drawer, by my bed, and in my hand bag. Recently (about 6 months ago) I purchased a Canson XL mixed media paper spiral bound book- (it’s affordable paper that can take a lot of work without pilling). I had wanted to get better at mixed media but all of my expensive sketchbooks are just too “precious” but this book gave me permission to play. I have filled that book and purchased 2 more. Most days I spend 10-20 minutes in that book using every medium I own in it, that’s the first thing I do when I get into my studio in the morning. It’s a great warm up AND I’m actually getting better at mixed media! I also have my plein air kits packed and ready to grab & go. Having those makes painting on the go definitely easier and I’m always tweaking my kit to make it more streamlined. It’s such a joy in busy life to pull the paints out and do a quick painting…. I’m getting better at that too just by making it easier to grab & take along.
I'm so glad you like it Hannah! I really like that you have multiple cheap sketchbooks everywhere. I do a similar thing! And the Canson mixed media sketchbook is great. I have a big one I got last summer and it's perfect for just playing around, getting my creativity out - it's so true that the cheaper ones are easier to use! lol! And I love that each morning you have a routine of warming up and evolving your mixed media without really trying!! I love it!!
Aren't botanicals so fun to draw?! I love that even if you get the proportions off a little bit, it still looks like something you find in the garden! :) Thank you so much for writing me! What's been a favorite flower you've drawn? Mine are these square drawings i've been doing more of!
I have 3 kids that I homeschool and I work part-time from home as well as a few other gigs I work outside of the home a few days a week. My days are usually chaotic and busy and finding time for my art and improving my skills can be tough. I have to wake up early so I can lead a group exercise class in the mornings and before I head out I've started taking the time that I sip on my coffee to sketch whatever is sitting on my kitchen table. Or I will sketch a face of somebody I know. It's the best way to start my day. I love it and it's a great moment of calm I get to enjoy before the day begins.
You definitely have a more chaotic and busy life with all your littles! I'm so glad that you have attached your sketching while you sip on your coffee. That must feel like such a treat to your day! I love that so much!
Hey Jaclyn you have some great tips here I have my 'easy' art supplies for easy sketching ready and available in a little corner of my desk pencil eraser and fineliner sepia amd black o.1mm both and sketchbook this means my art materials a very simple I'll draw a small and simple subject ie. Flower and I'll set my timer for 10 minutes that feels easy and obtainable for me and I end up feeling like I made time to relax get inspired and focus mindfulness living in the moment with every stroke of the pencil after pencilling I erase and line the flower then I'll add dots amd dashes for detailing I'm an absolute beginner with flowers I'm soooooo excited ❤
That's so good you have your easy art setup in a little corner. So cute! And good tip for setting a timer to help you just get in the flow and draw whatever you can in that time. That's so good!
Hi 👋🏼. Great advice! The one place that I get inspired the most to paint is bed. Anyone has any good advise on how to paint in watercolours on white bedsheets 😂? No seriously 😐. What supplies do you keep next to your beds and how do you protect your bedsheets from phthalos?
Getting one of those bed desks or even a "breakfast tray" would help with keeping your art supplies all together and more off the bed! As for the white sheets, you could always lay out a blanket you don't mind getting paint on to help save the sheets :)
😂I loved this! Try folding an old sheet several times and lay that under your work… or I have used an old quilted pillow sham or old quilted table runner. Those phthalos do not wash out well at all. Maybe you should buy sheets with a colorful busy print on them!
I'm imagining raccoons sledding down a glacier, because I can't figure out what "coon sleddin'" is. I love your art set up. Good luck with the raccoons. Your art is gorgeous + inspiring!!!!!
Love seeing how basic your 'tools' are and certainly enjoying watching an example of how to start from scratch a drawing. Looking for positioning on a page as well as drawing the basic shapes within a drawing. Thank you for sharing.💕
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, knowledge, and experimentations to discover what works for you. I am a newly retired gal who loves day or through hiking solo. And I have recently taken up drawing plein air and would like to integrate drawing with the hiking in the beautiful mountains near my home.🧡
I’m so glad you liked the video and it helps you to know what to bring out plein air painting! Just being in nature and observing it slowly is so wonderful! I’m so excited for you to explore your mountains too!!!
Thanks for making this video. Some day in the future I’d like to try gouache, as a substitute for oil since gouache is also opaque. It’s good to know that one can paint it on canvas. And the canvas wasn’t even primed.
I’m so glad you liked this video! Yeah I hadn’t tried gouache on raw canvas before so I was very happy it worked out! It seeped into the canvas with the first layer so all I had to do was put another layer on it. But I do that even on paper too with how I paint!! I hope you try it in the future!
I’m really intrigued by using the canvas as a background. Never have thought of that. I’ll look forward to more videos showing how you go with it. I’ve done a few classes using vine and block charcoal. It’s also great for adding darker values for graphite. Thanks for sharing
I’m excited to start my art project once the canvas comes in! I’ll definitely make another video on it. And I like the idea of adding charcoal to my graphite drawings too to really get that darkness. Thank you!
Kneaded Eraser to keep your canvas clean. Nothing works better! Any smudges outside of the actual drawing lift out just by rolling it on or by dabbing. You’ll likely go through a bunch but you can also use old dirty ones to deposit more charcoal in different patterns. I have an old charcoal botanical drawing video where you can see me dabbing on very light texture with a dirty kneaded eraser formed around my finger tip. Charcoal is super fun mark making wise if you’re willing to experiment and get a little dirty.
This is such a good tip, thank you! I have one kneaded eraser but good to know I'll go through it (so I'll get some more). And yes, I like the mark making of charcoal. I like being a clean artist, but charcoal always shows me that I can let loose and have fun. So it's the perfect thing for me right now! (oooh, and I'll go check out your vide - thank you!)
@@jaclynbaerart It’s actually short reel. When you see me using my hands as if smudging most the times it’s me either using a kneaded eraser to deposit or lift charcoal. So I kept a “dirty” and a clean eraser. And sometimes I smudged with it creating a smoother texture insteaf of using a sponge. Play with it, it does many things! I’m glad I could help! ru-vid.comeRU2KD_jDCg?si=Fwu6Kg2SHQ8u3x7q
How dissapointing to have the wrong item in your cart. Fortunately Blick has stellar customer service, but still there is that wait time. I've found it best to work upright rather than on a horizontal surface. The charcoal won't accumulate as much, sort of like soft pastels. If you can't do that, then tape your piece to a board and gently tap the edge of the board on your table when you need to remove some excess. I've never had much luck in finding any brush soft enough to sweep anything away without disturbing my piece. But then again, I've only ever worked on paper. Maybe the charcoal will settle into the raw canvas more than it does on paper. Good luck in your experiment! Nothing like learning (or relearning) a new medium to make you feel like a novice...haha... but really, even though it can be frustrating, it is often rewarding and fun!
Yes! I will work on a tilted/upright surface to help with the falloff of the charcoal. Such a good tip thank you! And thank you for the well wishes, I do feel like a novice again, but just excited to dive back into the world of charcoal for my botanical drawings!!
Urgh, idk, I'm isolated in many ways. I don't have transport. In the middle of nowhere. I'm disabled and need someone with me and the only place we can go is down country lanes. As for friends, what are those? So, I'm lost on this one
I'm so sorry you are isolated in many ways. Perhaps you can create a cozy space in your home (kitchen table, living room chair) and have your hobby near it so you can just relax and create! I'm sure there are other artists out there feeling similar and you could look up groups that get together via online once a month or something like that if you wanted to!
Jaclyn I found your videos recently and I end up loving them. I can see how much care and passion you put in every video, keep going! As an artist I can say that you're videos are very inspiring and helpful. Being an artist it's not just about the art it's self but is a mentality. I'm doing the artist's way too and I think your tips really show the importance of personalize the course because we are all different. Sending love from Italy, Anna
You are so so sweet to write this! Thank you for your kind words. I'm so glad that you find my videos inspiring and helpful. :) And yay for doing the artist's way too - it's really a wonderful course and I love that I can share tips to customizing it to what you need!! I hope you enjoy the course and thank you again for writing me. I appreciate it!
Hi Jaclyn, I had to come back and tell you how much I am loving my Salka pouches! I’m so impressed with the design, quality and construction. I also sew, so I especially appreciate how well done every detail is, the material choices, zipper and construction are all just perfect. The sizes are just right too. I have both pouches and like keeping my pens, pencils, brushes, spray bottle, clips etc. separate from my papers, board and palette. I have a much larger plein air kit with easel, tripod, etc. but this setup with the Salka pouches and my ATK folio is so lightweight and easy, it goes everywhere with me now. Thank you for such a wonderful addition to my painting adventures!
This makes my heart so full! Thank you for sharing this with me!! I'm so glad each pouch works perfectly for your on the go setup. Isn't it so nice to just have the essentials and be able to create so easily? Thank you again for supporting my small business. Happy painting!!!
Just found your channel. Loving you sketches. I am a beginner and looking for a good fountain pen. I have Kaweco sport and Safari in mind, what would you advice. I am looking for a pen for everyday sketching (literally everyday) 😅
Aw, thank you so much! This Kaweco sport is a good little fountain pen for sure. I also have the Safari and love it too! As for an everyday sketch fountain pen, out of the two I have, I think the Lamy Safari would be a good fit!
Great talk on 🎨 artist dates! I'm just getting back to morning pages and found your post. Really enjoyed your chat and perspective of going with people if that helps... You have a great relaxed, comforting presentation style, and you've got a new subscriber. 😉
I'm so glad you enjoyed this video and my perspective on how to ease into Artist Dates. I love how people come to find the Artist Way and how it helps you grow. Yay for you finding it! And thank you for your kind words on my video, I really enjoyed filming this one!
