This is the blind attack, a stupidly idiotic racing technique that may just be useable with a stroke of luck. It involves turning your lights off in the pitch darkness of night, in a bid to disorientate your opponent, allowing you to overtake. There are a few known instances of this technique being used, but, it was Initially Deemed as a proper technique by that weird Japanese cartoon (Initial D). However, we all know that it isn't the most realistic of shows by now.A famous real world example is in an endurance race at le man's. It's the classic tale of Ford Vs Ferrari. The ford is bidding for an overtake coming into this chicane. He knows the Ferrari will defend hard, so he switches his lights off. The Ferrari is confused, and not wanting to cause a wreck, he shifts all the way to the inside. Allowing the Ford past. Outstanding move. Although, im going to ruin the moment. This is actually a glitch in the cameras auto exposure, that's why all the lights seemingly turn off, and not just the Ford's. Sorry weebs. Turning your lights off on a race track is highly illegal, especially in a 24 hour race at le man's. However, all hope is not lost. Something must have initialized de craze that put this tech ique into motorsporting folklore, right?
Well, yea. There is a legendary driver known as Tazio Nuvolari. He earned the moniker of Magic driver, because you never knew what he was going to do next. He even finished a race without a steering wheel, after it had become detached on the first lap. He finished 13th. That's the kind of driver we're talking about In 1930, Nuvolari was fighting tirelessly against his rival, Varzi, through the night. Although, his rival was far ahead, and was comfortable in his position. All he had to do was cruise to victory. Noticing he wasn't gaining, Nuvolari had the ingenious idea to turn his headlights off. Of course, this meant he was driving in excess of 70mph illuminated only by the moonlight. But, it did mean Varzi wasn't being pressured to keep up the pace. Thinking Nuvolari had fallen back, he became complacent, and slowed down.
Nuvolari finally caught up after a few KMs, and Varzi was taken aback by the sudden gush of wind passing him. A ghost car, with no headlights. Nuvolari switched back on his headlights back on, and sailed away to victory. So we have three examples of the blind attack. One is from a cartoon, the other is a glitch with the camera - and the third was done by an absolute nutter pre world war two. So does this technique actually hold any use in today’s motorsporting world?
Well, I’m here to tell you today, that I have created my own brand of the blind attack.
I’ve crafted my own version of this technique. After thousands of hours of simulated racing, I have perfected the blind attack. I call it “The TSRB Attack”, and I wanna see videos of this technique on youtube whenever you put it into use. I’ll be watching.
It’s the only variation of the blind attack that i’ve found to work. Sure, turning your headlights off going into a turn may look cool. But it’s dangerous. Even if you know the corner well, even a millisecond of turning in too late could result in a crash, and that’s before you even add a defending driver into the equation. As for the Nuvolari technique, well it’s possible, but again, ultimately pointless. So, let’s get onto the TSRB attack.
But do you wanna know what you SHOULDNT IGNORE? THIS VIDEO.

The origin of blind attack The 'blind attack' move was first used in the rematch race against Todou racing school. Takumi's opponent, Tomoyuki Tachi(a professional racer),pulled of a vanishing trick (vanishing racing line that utilize opponent's blind spot) to overtake him. Takumi who's not so familiar with pro racing thought that Tomoyuki turned off his headlight. So he decided to turn off his headlight to try overtake Tomoyuki.

Takumi did the first blind attack to immitate Tomoyuki's dissappearing line. Then he did it to make it impossible for the opponent to defend. Everytime after that he does it to get himself beside his opponent and then he turns his lights back on. It wouldn't say it's stupid, it's pretty genius imho

@@RyuusanFT86 if you think you can set any sort of a decent time on any track or road without practice, even with the best of conditions, let alone with literally no vision whatsoever, then that already tells me enough about you. Why do race car drivers do thousands of laps in perfect visibility to only get times that have already been done before? When they could just go at it in pure darkness for their first ever time driving the road and apparently do just as well? Why does every ken block gymkhana video have tyre tracks in every single corner before he even goes through it in the video? Because he practices the corners over and over again until he is confident with them, and this is all in broad daylight. The fact you think you can drive on a road you cant even see, without any lights at all, and with zero practice beforehand just by having "a good margin and feel for the pace" is baffling. There's a reason only 1 person in the entire of initial d even does this, and it just so happens to be the person who breaks physics in almost every single episode and is basically who the entire franchise is about
@RyuusanFT86
@RyuusanFT86 Год назад
@@InitialDreadly For you to write an overly long response reinforces how misinformed you are. The opening sentence just shows you don't even grasp a majority of racing as a whole, but if you're gonna write a missinformed essay, I'll be happy to corrrect you. We'll start with what merits a blind attack holds, that being not much. It soley relies upon the the driver in front of you either noticing your headlights gone and being distracted enough to make mistakes- which also relies on either the conditions of the battle not letting you pass or the driver blocking you and *_hopefully_* giving in on their blocking line. Doing so without knowing the road isn't something wise, which is why you at least study the road OR practice a bit. One night, even just 20-40 Minutes is enough time to memorize the road enough to rely on your skills and or experience, but it's not impossible to do it outright. As someone who's set competitive times on their first day on a Road course in a car with a suboptimal setup, I can yell you Doing so at night with poor visibility is not possible- but nobody here is talking about times. We're talking about pulling off driving with your headlights off behind someone who has theirs on. I'd like to add, visibility isn't immediately pitch black for every single road in the world. Running with just foglamps is something I've done for sake of getting used to a road that I already have a 3-4 hours on. All in all, it's not advisable for obvious reasons, but saying it's impossible- even with a few hours of seat time is just ignorant, almost pathetic if said with such confidence. Bonus points on that aspect for bringing up Ken Block without him beign related, dead give away you're just an inexperienced kid who's waiting to finally get out there and experience the world; if you can't yet or at all I don't blame you- but you're speaking to someone who spends every waking second and spare dime on racing their car since they were in highschool; I can say with full confidence that nothing about Initial D is special and a large majority of things present in the series are things that happen every day globally.

I remember reading the manga around 86 vs cappuccino race. The narrator made note of Takumi having “sort of a photogenic memory”, allowing Takumi retrace what he considers his fastest line, versus racing off sight alone. As a result, you get the blind attack. In short, even if he can’t see with his eyes, he can see with his… memory. Anyway, enjoyed your video! 👍🏾

To be fair the actual technique is the "disappearing line" and Takumi is confused and just turns his lights off. However, the blind attack is a LOT more usable on smaller mountain roads. I've personally raced against some of my friends and a few locals on the mountain roads near where I live - yes I know, very dangerous, only do it after 00:00 though. If you're chasing, then having your lights off actually let's you see more than with them on I find. At least for me - it might be some kind of concentration thing. I find it easier to see which lines they're taking and counter them, and it does make it a LOT harder for them to defend. Even if they're good I can set up an overtake over multiple corners, and they'll struggle to react. It is dangerous, yes, but there's nothing like it.

I can answer as to why it works in the anime at least, given that I'm an Arcade Stage player(not good at it though). When Takumi uses the Blind Attack, you have to keep a few things in mind: 1. Although he does study the passes he races on in 4th Stage and beyond, he has to rely on his opponent's innate knowledge of the pass to properly use the Blind Attack. 2. Takumi has to use his opponent's headlights and taillights to memorize braking patterns and the path ahead. 3. When using the Blind Attack, Takumi would have to know exactly how close he is to his opponent's headlights to know if the overtake is confirmed. I know this because I tried the Blind Attack against the Todou School Spoon EK Civic, and it's TOUGH to do it because of how fast he is in sectors 1-3 of the pass. You can't tailgate bc you have to see your opponent's headlights and you have to learn the Takumi execution to even make proper use of it in the one game it's designed to be used in. It's balls-to-the-wall stupid, but that's what makes it the coolest anime gimmick.

irl this is literally the definition of high risk high reward. I'm sure you have driven at night with roads that don't have any lights, at some point. I have, and turning your lights off is terrifying but if you know the road well and if you are racing this can be very rewarding since there is no way the opponent can see you, moonlight does absolutely nothing in terms of illumination. But in (most) racing games even though if you turn off your light you can most probably still be seen by your opponent or have like indicators of where you are.

I use the technique in GTA almost all of the time, most of racing veterans also uses it because headlights aren't really needed in that game as its naturally too bright at night, and some of them dont even race with headlights turned on. Also unfortunately on GTA it doesn't really matter much because all cars got their top speeds capped up too much and almost everyone races with catch-up turned on which caps the top speed of the leading car evne harder.

Blind attack is pretty much a circus trick that only works if you know the road like the back of your hand and know to look at the opponent headlights and not the tailights. It only works if your opponent panics, and if you can set up a quick overtake... If you however are way too slow when siding along them you'll end up crashing. It's just a circus trick that sometimes works

So basically do what protos and faster GT cars do all the time at endurance races nothing all that new ive seen it and used it myself hundreds of times and it only works if the drivers lasered focused in on the track and can be distracted easily but at that point wouldn't it be easier to just feint an attack or send it where as a proper blind attack yes is very dangerous can throw anyone off and reactions can be from mild panic to stopping the race entirely to see if your ok

It actually not that hard racing without headlights, of course you need to have use the road track million of time but overtime you will be good at it, both in game and in real life, there's a really nice windy road here in Beaufort Sabah, it not a mountain pass, it just a pretty flat road with small hill here and there, and it really fun to turn off headlights when racing other people there

Great Video! I think I've also done your TSRB Attack in Destiny, back when they had Sparrow Racing. A Sparrow is the futuristic rocket powered hoverbike you ride in the game to get to places faster. A long long time ago they had an event where it was actual racing. Laps, places, courses. One race I'm behind my friend who's keeping his line perfect, and to let him know I'm right there giving him pressure, I start spamming the horn. This worked, and I was able to take 1st after he made a mistake. He of course does this back to me on the next race when I'm keeping it perfect and he's 2nd right behind me.

Blind attack isn't just turning your headlights off. Originally it's called vanishing line, you can't defend from it as the other driver fakes from going outside to the inside in a split second and it doesn't require you to turn off lights. Secondly Takumi did it with pop up headlights, which gives him another advantage, less drag. And for the third point, when you go without headlights for some time and come to a corner you can surprise the front driver with illuminating the corner and it's visibility with your headlights, while he was observing the situation and preparing for the corner, which creates illusion that the corner is coming sooner than expected and you might be going too fast because your eyes were used to less lighting on the road. I realized it after watching Takumi race team 246 Omiya and his Mazda

The only real logic behind the Blind Attack is simply that it throws the opponent off, because instead of their focus being on what's in front of them and what they have to do, their focus is now on the guy behind them and the crazy stunt that he just pulled. The way it's represented in the show is kind of embarrassing though, like no he did not "just disappear!!" There's precedent for it and it could definitely work in some scenarios, but I really can't imagine anyone ever really doing it in a 1v1 race
@r3k2mutter79
@r3k2mutter79 Год назад
he did disappear, its pitch black that late at night and its impossible to see youre opponent behind you when the headlights are off
@NexusWarior211
@NexusWarior211 Год назад
I don't think the show meant to portray that he literally disappeared from existence, but rather that in the pitch blackness he just sorta vanished.

The difference is that the blind attack was never meant for circuit racing in gt cars doing 150mph on a straight it’s meant for 1990’s Japanese tōuge racing sure it’s a bit more dangerous so to the curves but there are street lights and guardrails and takumi only ever did it in a low speed turn to confuse his opponent it’s a viable technique if your mad enough in the head
