Howly! I first listened to the Album "Somewhere far beyond" in a School Bus in the early 90s, when a Friend brought his Discman and a new CD! 3 decades later, I still love their Sound and Hansi´s unique Voice!Back then, we all were Tolkien or PnP fans, so their Songs from Middle Earth just were hitting our hearts!

Without hyperbole... this is my favorite song of all time. Yes, I am that guy. I am the person to whom this is pure sonic perfection. You are absolutely right... I adore this precisely because it is full vocal harmonies all the way through. It's the apotheosis of Hansi's harmonic mastery! I totally get that it's not to everyone's taste. Yet there is no other tune like it. Nothing else goes full Harmonic Speed Metal Opera this hard or this deep. Original Studio version all the way... I think the live version is a hollow shell of the track without the full choir effect. I've always thought a full choir is the most majestic sound in music and I always want rock and metal to use it more. This was a song I had waited for all my life. When I read the lyrics and take in the story, it becomes clear the song is exactly as long as it needs to be. It's the final gasp of heroism and sacrifice for an entire nation as they charge into the apocalypse. The Trojan War lasted 10 years, so 14 minutes to commemorate its final tragic act isn't so much to ask. Thanks for giving it a shot! Even if it wasn't your jam, you still helped keep the Flame of Troy alight a little longer!

I can see all your critical points, but they make it my favorite song by BG ^^. Too many bars, too epic, too many layers, too many... well, there can't be enough Hansis (the vocalist) for my ears. I like the approach with the repetitive rhythmic ideas together with variation on the melodic side to glue the song together. For me, the vocal work on this track (on this album) is an interesting and, in the original sense, a progressive approach to breaking the formula: 'lead solo vocals with harmonies and multilayering to highlight distinct moments?! Let's do it the other way around, shall we?' :D All in all, this is BG's longest, most epic, and arguably most progressive song. This album in general was 'over the top'. Most of BG's songs are different. They started as a speed metal/proto power metal band in the 80's, evolving into more epic and symphonic sounds and later adopting a somewhat progressive approach. BG's most loved albums are the ones before "A Night at the Opera," which features this track "And Then There Was Silence." I think you'll enjoy other BG songs more, but they have trademarks one has to like or at least get by: André's (the guitarist) Queen-like playing, 'the army of Hansi's (vocals)' in different intensities, and somehow the mix of BG's stuff always lacks something different.

This song is MUCH better live without the overproduction.

Imo the overproduction works here, the song is supposed to be chaotic, confusing, it fits the theme and subject matter

The vocal harmonies are way over the top in this song, for sure, and it goes on for too long. However, some of the melody lines are pretty catchy and nice. Fair review!

The biggest mistake the person who sended the song was sending in the Studio 2017 version. The live version from Imaginations through the looking glass version is far better. Less Overproduction. And when you listen to the Live version there will be alot less overdubs. this whole A night at the opera album is just way too much. Thomen "The omen" Stauch left the band due this album. Citing it was too much prog and overdubs. they created far better songs and albums. Would really suggest The last candle. Imaginations from the other side. Somewhere far beyond.. So many other songs that represent the band Blind Guardian far better then this one.

I wholeheartedly agree. While I still like this song a lot, I can see all the criticisms.

I agree that the 2017 remaster was a mistake, me personally, i think the live imaginations through the looking glass is the worst version

@@copperqwaser2468 Really ? love the Imaginations through the looking glass live show. its their only full live recording. the rest off their so caleld Live records have been pulled from full tours. and quite often each song has a bit off a different mix on those live albums wich kills the mood for me. also its the only great version with Thomen behind the drumkit

@@remcovandenheuvel1315 it is a great show. But it is probably because I heard the album version first is why I like it better.

Yea this wasn't exactly their greatest song and one of my least favorite songs from my least favorite album from them. I had pretty much the same complaints as you when I 1st heard this song but the bad news is, this whole album is just like this song in my opinion and the surrounding albums were kinda similar. I really disliked this whole album. But Blind Guardian does have some extremely good songs from their other eras. I don't know what songs you have in queue but songs like The Last Candle and Banish From Sanctuary are amazing songs. The direction the band was heading at this time led to band members leaving

This song is like over saturated of ideas that don't go anywhere. Also the vocal harmonies is so over the top that there's no balance and dynamics to make them interesting.
