BLIND MELON: The Rise and Fall of the Band & Death of Frontman Shannon Hoon
0:00 - Introduction/Pre-Blind Melon Years
5:30 - Blind Melon Early Years
9:12 - Self Titled Record/No Rain
16:30 - Shannon Hoon's Final Years/Soup
21:31 - Recent Years
Blind Melon's journey from small-town outcasts to success was marked by a unique rise, including a two-year hype before releasing their debut record, thanks to their connection to rockstar Axl Rose. The original members, hailing from various small towns, found common ground in their outcast status. Guitarist and Bassist Rogers Stevens and Brad Smith, along with rhythm guitarist Christopher Thorn and drummer Glen Graham, eventually formed the band.
Stevens and Smith, childhood friends from West Point, Mississippi, moved to Los Angeles in 1989, seeking a better opportunity for their musical ambitions. They met Thorn through an ad, and Thorn chose Blind Melon over another potential project. Frontman Shannon Hoon, known for his volatile behavior and substance abuse, joined the band after an audition. Hoon's connection with Axl Rose added to the band's early hype.
Blind Melon's debut album faced challenges during its creation, as the band struggled to find a drummer. With Glenn Graham on board, they named the band Blind Melon, inspired by a term used by Hoon's father to describe a group of stoner kids. The band's musical influences varied, drawing comparisons to '60s and '70s rock.
The band's early days in Los Angeles involved odd jobs while they worked on demos. Within eight months, they signed a seven-album deal with Capitol Records. Their debut album, released in 1992, initially faced slow sales until MTV added the video for "No Rain." The bee girl-themed video became iconic, propelling the album's success to 4 million copies sold in the US.
Blind Melon faced criticism as their visual imagery, particularly the bee girl, overshadowed their music. They embarked on high-profile tours, including with Guns N' Roses and Neil Young. Hoon's struggles with substance abuse, legal issues, and disputes over songwriting royalties contributed to tensions within the band.
Tragically, Hoon's life came to an end in 1995 due to a drug overdose. Blind Melon attempted to continue but faced challenges, releasing their second album, "Soup," in 1995, which was a commercial disappointment. The band eventually disbanded in 1999.
Despite the hardships, Blind Melon's legacy endures, with their music and the bee girl video remaining iconic. The surviving members found various paths after the breakup, and in 2006, they reunited with new frontman Travis Warren. The band released their most recent album, "For My Friends," in 2008 and continues to work on new material. The documentary "All I Can Say," released in 2019, provides a glimpse into Hoon's life through his camcorder footage. The bee girl, Heather DeLoach, has moved on from acting, pursuing a degree in communications and family life.
Blind Melon's journey is a tale of triumph, tragedy, and resilience, showcasing the complexities of the music industry and the impact of personal struggles on artistic careers.

This will seem rather random. MOST people probably haven't heard of this band. I THINK that you're Canadian (I could be wrong, but for SOME reason it seems that I think that 🤷🏻‍♂️), and YOU maybe have heard of them.. MOXY FRUVOUS. But, then again.. I don't know if their lack of cultural influence or available information about them would even be worth a video. Ya know what? Nevermind. Apparently I'm just writing words 🤷🏻‍♂️... This can be another algorithm high-5. The heck is wrong with me?

Blind Melon is absolutely my favorite band. Shannon was such a talented singer and songwriter, and the band as a whole meshed in a way that few bands ever do. They always seemed to know exactly what to play and when. They had the potential to be great if Shannon had lived longer. I did not become a fan of the band until after his death, but I did get to see the band perform live in 2008. I got to hang out with Rogers Stevens for a little while, and he gave me one of his picks. Seeing them in person was an amazing experience, but also incredibly sad at the same time. Their story is one that seems to be forgotten among the wave of deaths in the 90s, but it may be the one that had an impact that few will ever know. As much as I love their music, it is hard to listen to sometimes, as I just get hit with this incredible wave of sadness when I listen to it. In many of the songs, Shannon was practically begging for help that never came. I hate that Nico never got to know her father, but I am grateful that the band members have remained in her life and have made an effort to include her over the years. Maybe one day people will see how great they were.

i was on a 1.5 year backpacking trip around the world when I traded a cassette tape with another trekker and it was BM. I absolutely loved that tape and played it hundreds of times, breaking and taping it back, I kept it with me as my 'World Trip Anthem'..!! I can still sing along with every song, word for word, and never knew a single thing about them, not even their names, just a love affair with a cassette tape and my walkman. After returning, they opened for Robert Plant at Shoreline, and for some reason, I didn't go, and shortly after, Shannon died. And I cried.

Andrew's falls being 2 of my favs. Oh the Duke what an awesome song I often think what these guys could have done if not for the devastating effects of addiction. From the 50s to the recent days, man, the great ones leave us too soon. Brad , Kurt, j bird Coleman, Mc coy , Hendrix.. I mean Hoone's death DEVASTED me the way Kurt's death devasted the rest of the world. They were my coming of age band. I dated a guy in a band that was pretty popular in the local south east coast scene. They plated with bands like jaw box social distortion and spider monkeys and they had that same kinda bluesy hippie rock grass roots sound and WE LOVED these guys. I knew Rogers Stevens, their lead guitarist. I worked with him for a couple years before Blind Melon started. I was in a band too and used to give him a hard time because Blind Melon weren't paying their dues and building a following in clubs. It seemed they went straight to playing showcases for the record companies. Capitol was really behind them. No Rain was something like their third or fourth attempt at a single, but Capitol still had faith in them. The Axl Rose connection absolutely helped them get attention. Shannon and Axl were longtime friends. Rogers is an extremely nice, down to earth guy. The last time I spoke to him, he was telling my how amazingly lucky he felt and couldn't believe he was opening for people like Lenny Kravitz. I didn't know Shannon at all. Was introduced once. He was short and seemed like an enthusiastic guy. Anyway, if you ever get to meet Rogers, he's a great guy, humble, and friendly. He deserves the success he had. I felt so sad for him when Shannon died, because it was pretty clear they couldn't replace him.

I taught Brad Smith tennis. He's pretty good, gave me free tickets and a guitar pick. Also I talked to him about Tool and Radiohead. He told me it would be great to be in a band that had so much success that they could take time to put out music. Kind of a surreal conversation in hindsight.

Shannon had what we call, IT. He was one of those artists that would put all of himself into his art. It was a tragic loss.

I still have the guitar that he played me Change on Up in the Main street Practice room above the arcade Before the song was finished. Michael Kelsey is far left in the photo of Styff Kytten I still get up And Play with him, and the Bass player Brian Bundy, played bass on my E.P. saved my life Lots of Memories.

Soup was a fantastic album. I didn't listen to Blind Melon until after Shannon Hoon passed. I saw a behind the music on VHS and then listened to them. I loved the debut album, Soup and Nico. My favorite songs are St. Andrew's Fall; Time; Skinned; Mouthful of cavities; I could go on about how great their music is. But fans know so I don't have to tell you!
