One of the classics of all time--and the best part? So many people don't realize this is a cover! The Boss did it first, Manfred Mann's Earth Band did it best.
MN man in my 60's here. With over 11k comments I don't expect anyone to read this, but I need to say something. I LOVE 70's rock with organ in it. Sometimes I feel like I'm alone there, but Manfred Mann, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, even come early REO Speedwagon just turns my crank!! I play guitar in a few bands and the keys add SO MUCH!
Bruce Stringbean:Grown in The USA's version from 4 years earlier maybe? His only song to make #1. Dancin in the dark only hit #2. Mann made this a #1 also. Bruce joked that his version only became a number one hit after Manfred took his song about hot rods and made it about a feminine hygene product. Haha.
@@loompsterproductions Thank you. I’m grateful that people are willing to spend their time sending their condolences to me. His family thanks you as well.
Sorry for ur lost, i feel ur pain and aslo lost my childhood Best friend to drugs, miss him daily. We both have the same first name and everytime my name is called i miss him more...
Skimming through the top comments and see they're all 1 to 5 years old. 2024 and this song still rocks as hard as the day it came out. Leaving this comment so I can come visit this legendary tune again whenever somebody else comments.
Maybe this sounds weird, maybe I’m a pussy.. whatever you want to call it... I turned 17 on October 11th, 2020. Every time I hear this song I want to break down crying. My dad was born in the 60s, so naturally, I grew up surrounded by classic rock. This was one of his favorite songs, I heard it constantly on the radio. It reminds me of all the childhood truck rides with him. I lost my dad to suicide in 2013. Now that I’m almost an adult, it’s getting so much harder rather than easier. I miss him more than ever. All I have left is the music he listened to.
Always cherish your memories, music can make or amplify memories, as if galvanizing them. Never forget your dad. Rock on and remember one day, you'll be with your dad again. The greatest love you can show your dad is to live a full life!
Stay strong in such trying times, as the True Light will be coming soon. This song is about taking the bait of the False Light, aka the Lucifer, and being burnt as a result. And the singer's name is Chris. Must be a coincidence.
Hey bro I can't say I know what your going through cuz I have yet to experience the loss of a close relative plus I don't even know who my father is never met the guy but from what I have gathered in my very roughly lived 42 yrs I can tell you I feel at least 85 from such a balls to the wall lifesty u chose to put myself through I found that those you love are never far from you you just can't visually detct cuz their form cannot be seen as we only see a very miniscule amount of the light spectrum trust your pops is their everywhere not metaphorically but instead quite literally and is ready and able to assist you or guide you through any obstacle think of him as your new guardian angel on duty 248/365 so don't go doin anything you don't want him to know about cuz that's not possible i hope you can find that knowledge comforting and not disturbing cuz it is for real😉
And the spirits of the just who are made perfect through suffering shall enter Heaven, I truly believe this, have faith and you will see your Dad again! May God’s precious Holy Spirit take away your pain and bring you full healing for your loss.
Know how you feel. 3 years since my grandfather passed away so it’s not easy for me to listen to music without thinking about him. He introduced me to real music. Condolences to you😞.
@@BadlndsBob Manfred Mann didn't write this song Bruce Springsteen did. Once he started coving his own song this one lost air time unless requested. It's about Springsteen's younger days night racing hot rods. The Duece was his Duesenberg he revved up it's engine and it was his hot rod of choice "his runner in the night" (night race). It's not popular today because most younger people don't know about the Jersey Shore lifestyle around the strips near the boardwalks with their Merry go Round. One bad car crash and the Calliope (Merry go Round) crashed on to the ground because he got blinded by the lights (doing 80 mph's at the boardwalk). Back in the days it made sense but today that lifestyle is history and so is this song as far as topping charts anymore
Absolute Legend of a song , nearly 2024 and it Still Rocks today even after All these Years. True music . Those that are listening to this song you have Amazing taste in music, I salute you stay safe from the 🇬🇧
Hes lips look like he's saying repped up in a deuce lol, but supposedly it was "cut loose like a deuce" tel Springsteen covered it and changed it to "revved up like a deuce" referencing revving a '32 deuce coupe.
Thank you, I sure needed to read your comment. I appreciate it more than you can ever imagine. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and I miss my Mom. You have a good day as well.
I remember as a kid having nights where I just couldn't sleep and about 12:30 or 1 a.m. I'd turn on the radio and it would inevitably be one of the endless rock anthems like this one or Stairway to Heaven or Paradise by the Dashboard Light or pretty much anything by Boston.
ugh.... just give me one hot sunny summer day in the 70's to put on my flip flops and hear this on the way to the corner store for some 'Black Cat Gum' and a freezie... lol
Unfortunately, mostly that was the radio edit version that left out the third verse and "mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun" refrain, which is the point of the song--if it has one.
My step-dads name was Manfred (but we used to just call him Manny) and always kept the album this song was on in his car. We used to listen to it together, when we drove somewhere without my mom or sister. He died this February due to a brain tumor.. I miss him so fucking much. (I know that many people don't care, just wanted to share this story about this great song.)
I am sorry for your loss man.... I remember this as music I listened to in my lost youth....and I always had the album "There's a yawn in my ear" on tape in the car soon. Rock on fella
+KaiserDragon that's what humans do! we dance for a little bit then put our bodies to rest. Come back again in the next life to dance again! Until we are finally finished. Love all humans as family. We are all the same with an exception of a few naughty fat cats.
@@rhysgoodman7628 I think it's a joke, because it is also another runner in the night, not break a rubber. And I saw a meme about this lyric being unintelligeble. So I think it was a joke but I'm not sure. Sorry for my english
90's child here, brought up listening to all the golden oldies. This is one of my all time favorites, this and "Band on the Run" by Mr Paul McCartney & Wings.
This song easily has the most underrated guitar solo in the history of music, and it's an absolute shame that it was cut from the single version. So many people missed how amazing it truly was.
The reference is what was taking place in the '70s. Many political and musical occurrences are the referenced in the lyrics. The lyrics did not make any sense to me until the 1970s were used as key references.
Wow I'm honored and privileged to have grown up with the best music artists of all time and having to go way back to hear it in 2023 makes it more inviting !!😂
This reminds me of High School. 11th grade. Loved this, but it took time. I was a Hard Rock guy Zepp, Purple, Humble Pie, but i came to love this!! I actually saw Manfred Mann in 1974 with Frank Zappa back East in Cleveland. They were very good. Saw lots of groups in Cleveland. It Rocked there in the Mid 1970's. My dad lives there. Im from L.A.
This is my Dad’s favorite song, and ALMOST every time I hear it I start to cry thinking about, playing this song at this funeral. And he knows all the lyrics to this song, and he may not be the best singer in the whole wide world. But when I see the blue eyes on the man that raised me sing this with his eyes watering, it means something. Has the same effect or even more powerful effect of my mom singing a lullaby to me.
Your dad was a very cool dude! My dad’s favorite song was Sunshine Lady, maybe you could listen and we could appreciate them both! It’s a blues song lol but it’s the sweetest love song lol
I remember when I was a teenager I almost cry in tears when I bought a cassette of Micheal Jackson and there was no lyrics in the card inside ( considering the prize I was paid lol)))
Since DJs don’t have to play songs off physical media and switch them after they play, break songs have gone out of style. That’s why “Stairway to Heaven” was played so often; it gave you enough time to do your business, grab something to eat or drink and still be back to change it to “Aqualung”.
Basically, the song is about a dude driving around his town on his motorcycle. He sees the children playing and feels his age. Recruiters come out and try to get him for different jobs. The opportunity to be a star catches his eyes and he becomes obessed with it. He is blinded to everything else as he chases that. His community moves on, but he is still stuck on being a star.
Ppl will be listening to this *_every_** year* for *a **_long_** time.* It gets _thousands_ of views _Everyday._ Why are y'all so thirsty for likes? 🤔😆
Rocking this at almost 3am with my wife and I sleeping in our office after an epic work party. We’re in our early 40s this song still slaps and life is amazing! THATS were the fun is!!! Chopsticks lol
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the Sun... whomever was like me how to find out for themselves.. pushing 60 I wish I listened to everything my mother told me. Not one nasty word in this song even though my mother thought it was douche,, but at least they wore pants correctly , and not singing about guns and drugs. We were not total Angels back then but we did no one else harm.
Thinking of my friend big Dave, RIP. I had a 72 Ford Pinto with chrome rims, wide tires, traction bars, dual exhaust, tuned header, blue printed short block with a pair of Weber carburetors. Dave said he could hear me coming five miles away blazing those Weber dueces running through the Pocono nights. Love how this song keeps us together even after his death.
I remember sitting in an Applebee's with my late mom and this song came on over the speakers. She then said how back when she was in high school in the 70s, all the guys would sing "douche" instead of "deuce". I can hear it no other way now.
Springsteen is a genius songwriter, musician, artist and performer! This version by a terrific band really takes a great song to yet another level with this interpretation!! One of earliest rock songs that blew me away with its beauty and passion…
I heard this song back in 1976 when it first came out. I was 6 at the time. My aunt had a red square radio which she would place by her bedroom door so all of us could listen to Manfred Mann and this masterpiece. The nostalgia is something amazing. All of you who heard this song back then just like I did are truly blessed. The kids of today will never understand it.
I was a 90's kid and my parents raised me on Elvis, 60s 70s and some 80s, and Motown. 90s had it's good things to, like Alanis Morrisette (that I picked up through my older brother) (Almost) everything that came after is rubbish
@@stuntmonkey00 That's because Springsteen's version SUCKED and MM's version was SO MUCH MORE FUCKING AWESOME that it blew Springsteen's away, completely OUTTA THE PARK, like not even in the same league. Stringbean was an overrate fuckwad.
I at least hope that the people who thought that this was the Weeknd’s song actually liked it and got into 70’s and 80’s music. The best decades for music!
😂❤I am tears reading all the comments of this audio gasm .exactly how I've felt giggling.every 35 to 15 year old I put this on to are immediately bonded to this on their playlist, all other comments are are mine by another hand.thanks Bruce for writing this but that's where Bruce's talent ends with this one, very much mannfred Mann for bringing this one into masterpiece eternity .all hail...
Every time I hear this classic, it takes me back to the glorious days of the '70's, when we didn't have a care in the world. Turn out the lights, turn on the lava lamp, smoke a joint..and enjoy!
Yeah we didn't have power yesterday. And this morning when I woke up, the electric was back on so I went into the bathroom and turned on the light and immediately said blinded by the light!.
Today, April 8th, 2024 we were ALL blinded by the suns beauty and beautiful moon enriched Corona here in Burlington Vt. OMG, what a spectacle, what crowds we had, glorious weather at 61f, thank Shiva, God, Omnipotent one, Buddha! Fab day indeed as is this great 70's song in a bar I worked in never wanted to here it again after the 25th time, YIKES! Bravo everyone! Carry on...
This song brings back so many memories for me along with The Eagles. I was a kid in the 70s and I remember listening to songs like this in between weather reports hoping and praying that our county would be called to not go to school because of snow or ice. Makes me feel all warm inside. Sometimes wish those days could come back but only if I could take my 2 grandsons with me. 🥰
@@paulahunt3508 thank you so much for your reply Paula. There's not a whole lot in this world to be happy about anymore but you grab and hold onto things that give you the warm and fuzzies. Mine are some music and of course my 6 and 4 year old grandbabies. I wish I could protect them from everything. My son and daughter were slightly upset when I announced that I love those two grandboys more than anything in the world. My two kids were like but what about us mom. I said sorry that's just the way it is lol. They are 33 and 28 so they need a lot of growing up still. Of course I love my daughter and son but the love I have for my grandsons is completely different you know? God bless you!
This is one of those songs that I would hear growing up when mom and dad would kick on the radio all weekend on the classic rock station and every now and then it shows up in my head out of nowhere. Today was one of lose days lol.
Funny thing when Springsteen wrote this he didn't think it was worth recording. THEN of coarse when these guys turned it into a hit he changed his tunes.
Bruce Springsteen wrote this one, but this is the ultimate version ! He had to be hugely impressed with this when hearing it. It hit number one in the U.s and in Canada, Am all time classic. Thanks Bruce and Manfred Mann
For some odd reason, this song gives me roadtrip vibes. Don't know why. It's not like it played in the car that I was in when I had my first road trip. It just gives me that feeling.
my dad was a drag racer and won the Winston Nationals and he and the team would play this song so they had the words right but i was blinded bt how cool the song was and steal listening in 2019 I'm 53 years old. I miss my dad so it brings back great memories of me being just little and life was good.
I used to listen to this when it was a hit in the 70s and hated it. I was 10 and it bored me. My wonderful uncle, who was like a dad to me, used to say how great it was and that I would get to like it. 45 years later I realised he was right. He passed away last year and I now love it. When the intro comes on it brings a tear to my eye and my uncle, brothers and I are sat in front of his radiogram again in 1974 counting down the top 40. Great treasured memories because of a song I used to hate. Ain`t life strange.
Congrats on the Winston Nationals, Pauline Serini, you sound like a rockin' lady! I posted the mix/lyrics so they could be followed by the 99% that don't know them, LOL! It has really cool visual effects in the center break on this one..I'm 60 now and still like the REAL music ,not the current crap that calls itself 'music'..sorry about your dad, I was adoppted, my folks have been dead over 25 years now, over 30 for my dad..
