Interesting thought....I do have a fair amount of vintage gear. I do wonder how top vintage gear stacks up against today's? I suspect very little difference. I assume modern technology and advancements have brought quality audio to a much more affordable level; where once cheaper meant far inferior.

In the early 1970s I listened to music at BARNET Brothers HiFi in CHINATOWN in PHILADELPHIA. Th e MAGNEPAN TYPAMPANI 1Ds were driven by Audio Research vacuum tube electronics, I don't have the words to describe how beautiful that system sounded OH MY GOODNESS.

Possibly the best system I have ever heard. It was about 1980. Tympani I, powered by a pair of Mark Levinson ML-2 amps with a Levinson preamp, the table was a Goldmund. I wasn't looking when the music started and at the first note my head snapped around and I just said "damn". The Tympani is one of the best speakers ever made. That Quad sitting behind it is no slouch either. That experience caused me to recently buy a pair of ML-2 amps, once I found out they could power my electrostatics. I also have a Thorens TD-124, a contemporary, and equal, of the Gerrard. Idler turntables are very solid, but I prefer newer tables, my Pink Triangle Anniversary was made in 1992. The Pink is the best turntable I have ever heard at any price with the caveat that, even though I have heard some very good and expensive turntables, I have not heard everything.

@@bjorn2run I 100% agree. Dr Fried was a genius. It's sad more people havent been able to hear some of his master pieces. I would put some of his speakers against many new hi end speakers and I believe alot of people would be amazed. The TLS 80s were insanely good and that's 1970s tech. I havent heard any of his RSPM or his SACM but the drop to 7hz!! Linear frequency to the point they were used for Scientific audio experiments. I would imagine they would hold their own with any new speaker made today..... steve!!!!!....you have to hear them if you haven't.

@@myfagan the late and great mr Fried (the genius he was) actually was just the importer of IMF and a great spokesperson for tl designs. In later years he actually designed his own after losing the imf trademark to the real designer, John Wright. Unfortunately he never got the recognition he deserved. I own and have heard multiple tl speakers but IMF always comes out on top! i agree that Steve should check them out.

I had a Japanese Fisher ""Studio Standard" integrated amp from the mid 80's that sounded great. A/B'd against my 500c, it sounded like transisors not tubes but it held its own. When a channel went out my tech disparaged it before saying he couldn't fix it. I begged to differ. I still use its companion graphic equalizer when I play cassettes.

I heard the 1D’s back in the early 70’s (71-73?) at a HiFi Shop in Milwaukee called Wacks . They played Stevie Wonders “ Living for the City”... it is still the most memorable audio audition I have ever heard and I’ve had a lot of high end gear!

At a stereo show in Atlanta (1975) I had the opportunity to hear the Infinity Electrostatic with a bass commode (before subwoofer). Each speaker was taller than a man and maybe five feet wide. They were also the best speakers I ever heard. Music sounded as if it was live.

Just seeing this now. I would be in hog heaven to listen this type of equipment, again. The Magnepan Tympani speakers opened the world of high end home audio for me. Different but still startling to me were the JBL 4330 & 4333a speakers. ☆ Love how he meticulously restored and improved the Garrard 301. Looks like a great tone arm was employed. ☆

It have 4 magnepans including the tympani (which is my main speaker since last couple years) With some subwoofer support on the low end, I have over 20 pair of speakers (up to price range 5000usd new priced speakers) Nothing hits me in the soul as the tympani can. Not my kappa 9 (3k new), or top model Boston acoustics 500l (5k new) the only speaker I got that has similar trades? And I could live with, is my Infinity rsII The tympani needs lots of patience and time and understanding (panels that hinge so you can play with phasing and time alignment physically ) no speaker has that. It’s the best sound field I ever heard, they are not super defined in the highs (tends to roll off a bit) but it has that . Lush warm embodied inviting sound to them.. Incredible speaker, mine got refurbished but magnepan couple years ago.

Add a pair of subs cut them off at about 60hz ..you'll need space and try tweeters on the outside if you can. It will destroy most high end systems hands down. Would be wise to rebuild them first ..

Several years ago, I replaced my 1970’s Kenwood KA3500 amp and Dynaco A25 speakers with a Marantz PM6004 amp and KEF Q100 speakers. I kept the old system and I find myself listening to the Kenwood most of the time. I think my ears aged with the Kenwood and Dynaco and find the old sound to be more appealing. Plus, I prefer the Kenwood’s silver front panel.

We'll, yeah. That's a fine and close selection of some best audio kit of the time. Some gear - very little, but some - is still pretty good. I've listened to various Tympani models and have owned several Maggie models, and listened to many more, over the last 40+ years, so I've heard how they've changed. I have listened to the Marantz 7 pre, 5 and 9 amps, and 10 tuner. I had several '80s and '90s vintage C-J amps and preamps I owned from new that I let go of just a few years ago. I have or can listen to properly tuned Snell Es and Cis, Spica TC-50s and Angeluses, various vintage turntables fitted with vintage SAEC, Grace, ADC, Shure, etc., tonearms running lovely vintage Grace, Supex, Dynavector, or Denon cartridges. I had a wider range of gear in my home and auditioned far more over the last nearly 50 years. Yes, some of this vintage stuff can be very good - still. But I seem to well remember the vast preponderance of gear that wasn't good. The difference today is that now it's almost difficult to find something that sounds awful, and at the lower cost end of the market, there is SO much good gear. Never have we had so much easy access to so much good sounding gear, offering so much value and such convenient form factors.

I recall listening to the Timpanis back in the 70's at a Hifi Shop called DKL Labs, which was located in Silver Spring Maryland. I was in my 20's at the time and was in total awe and astonishment! As you said Steve, a wall of stunning sound and clarity that I still remember.

I don't find it surprising it hasn't gotten better in 40 years. We knew how to make great sound before that, at least back to 1959 (and surely before) with a couple of my favorite sounding recordings of all time created in '59 by Miles and Brubeck.

There are some equiment i have never seen in the video they as probably never imported to Sweden but it is nice seeing something new. I am realy in to vintage audio but i mix with diy. my current system is Altec 604E in my own cabinets ,thorens 150, TD125 homemade LB, Lenco sort of L75 idler, tube preamp, Dynaco ST35 or EL84SE. When people visit me they are suprised how god it sounds and don't belive some parts are more than 40 years old.

thats a magic system right there , i have auditioned many turntables and owned far too many , my garrard 401 is the one i always go back to , magnepan would do well to make a new timpani , maybe even a smaller version using their entry level 0.7 panel as the basis for a baby timpani

Started my high end with Quad 57s and although I loved them I bought the Tympani IVa (first tympani to incorporate the true ribbon tweeter) upon hearing them once. I still have them and are still my favorite speaker despite all the challenges (auditioned possible replacements for over 30 years). Actually did buy a pair of 20.7s but although they are quite good do not reproduce the magic of the Tympani. I power mine with Krell 600e evolution amps and do admit it takes quite a bit of time and patience to set them up and properly position them in the room. But once done right you get the highest, widest, and deepest soundstage possible. I won't try to describe them you just need to hear them. I see pairs of 1Ds on eBay for as low as 1500 and occasionally IVas for 3000.

Same here I have a plethora of cone speakers from rather cheap to really expensive (I have tons of infinity speakers in my collection , including the mighty rs1b, kappa 9, renaissance 80 and more) Nothing compares to a magnepan and most certainly not with a Tympani. Mine has been refurbished by magnepan , I also got a mgI , mgII and mmgw and had a mmgi . I will never go back to pure cone, I do feel they require subs to really rock . But man ... magical! I had a quad esl57 on jadis orchestra reference tubes about 20 years ago now. Great speaker but to small and beams like crazy (super small sweet spot) And you're correct set them up correctly (tweeters OUTSIDE NOT INSIDE) goes for the Tympani I. Add some subs ,I have mine active crossed over at 60hz or so . The open soundfield you get, instrumental seperation, that mid range timbre of voices on these speakers are insane. I will only upgrade to a Tympani 4 or 4a I have pitted so many speakers against it, they are in a league of their own.

My uncle had a quadrophonic system with these speakers - that’s four of these. His wife forced him to upholster them with an arguably pretty cloth. As a young kid I was fascinated by the design, but now I am thinking how much the sound must have gotten destroyed by the extra cloth!

I had Tympani's with an SAE X25A Amp, a Nikko Beta 3 pre amp and a Mitchell Focus One Turntable with a Dynavector Ruby Cartridge it was magical for sure

That Garrard looks a treat. Artisian Fidelity does a nice update of all the Garrard's and other idler drives. I was never a fan of the room dividers though. However, playing it through a Linn would be more period correct, although I prefer the redone Garrard's any day.

Instant Replay!: The more things change ... the more they remain the same.. Sound and build quality were more readily available to most consumers at affordable prices 60 years ago. The problem now is: "Would you want to build your entire system with antiques that will inevitably have parts that wear out sooner, go out of spec and/or fail and .. you have no way to find exact, functional replacement parts?". Even after having my early 60's Sherwood S 5000 ii restored, this is a concern.

This is a great demonstration of how really excellent sound was eventually achieved by the mid 70s, but really even by maybe the early 60s, for a price. Have things gotten any better? Well prices certainly have gone down. But for vinyl reproduction I don't think we've surpassed the best that was available by the early 60s. CDs do surpass vinyl as a source for excellent low noise and dynamics, but they don't really improve the enjoyment levels of vinyl done well. What CDs and modern speakers do is sound and fidelity that are about the same for a small fraction of the cost. Vinyl on a bad turntable isn't really a treat. CDs on a "reasonable" player still sound really good.

Forget the technical difference but Maggie’s aren’t, and don’t sound like electrostatics (the departed apogees, Martin Logan, etc). Apogees were horrible bright and forward (something a lot of people like apparently), Maggie’s aren’t. I love Maggie’s, not any of others.

I also managed to get two pairs of the original kef x300a active, non wireless version loudspeakers, both pairs for the lowly pricely sum of £500 gbp, so I could wire separately two of the four speakers independently of each other, instead of a connecting cable between two speakers.

wow they look amazing... it's strange that you can move the tweeter with respect to the two mids and change the orientation... with the sound coming out both front and back of each panel.... it must do very "psychedelic" things to the sound!!!! I see they have the legendary ELS quads also back there... To bad I live in Australia I'd like to check the shop out for sure.

2:59 is that a Quad speaker below your forearm and to the left (on screen) of the Garrad? I posted on a uk channel (I’m in London UK) that I have a very old Garrad 301, quite literally components that would need to be restored/sod for parts and two Quad speakers…

Not saying modern gear is bad, it is not...in fact in digital media, streaming, DACS, DAPS, portable amps, IEMs, streaming devoces, servers, WIFI and latest BLUETOOTH tech....with hi rez music files in FLAC, ALAC, DSD, etc....blending vintage w modern audiophile gear....gotta tell ya....it is a fun time to enjoy great music!!!

The price of over $20K+ for the system seemed over the top until I realized (as a photographer) that the Hasselblad H6D digital camera is more than twice the price and doesn't even include a lens lol. Perspective is everything. It certainly is a gorgeous system.

Heard them at Lyric w two Janus dubs and all mark Levinson I believe each panel individually amped - the idea was if you couldn’t buy the tympani s you’d get I think it was 1.6 w Ampzilla

You’re always welcome , I am one of the very few out there that also has a entire magnepan tympani home theater setup .. I’ve had and still own about 20 pairs of speakers . Nothing comes close to the warmth and size these speakers can produce sound.

You can I have a video up on my channel, restored and upgraded magnepan tympani I speakers. In this video they are not rebuild , the tweed socks on them is a dead give away. It's a incredible speaker to hear and listen too . Even recorded with a phone on my channel

Carlos Bauzá well first off magnepan are line source speakers, horn speakers are not. Magnepan are di pole, horns are not .. Inherent different designs with each their pros and cons

Find some seamstress who does needlepoint, she could easily restore the cloth covers on those Maggies, they are looking just a little shabby and there's really no good reason for that. Is that arm original to the turntable?

The Garrard 301 was sold as a motor unit only, the customer paired it with a plinth, arm and cartridge of their choice. The arm in the video is a SME Series V, which came out in the mid 80s, so it's not contemporary with the Garrard which was discontinued in the 1960s.

I'm unsure of the Magnepan's appearance. The camera doesn't convey color accurately. The lens distorts perspective. RU-vid video is compressed. There is no scale for reference. Is it large or small? Can you describe it for me so I understand?

They are 6ft tall by about 4.5feet wide. The off white speaker cloth indicates never rebuild before. Today you can get socks for them , in black, and white (pure white and better stretch cloth) of you see Maggie with off white ?! Never been touched before 100 percent. Not sure if magnepan still rebuilds them today . But you can get entire rebuild kits for them. It's tedious , but not impossible, mine was rebuild by magnepan somewhat years ago. And I have them in black ...

Yes, I'm sure the "good parts" of that system are very good indeed. My old Stax SR-3's from the same period still impress me....in some ways. But listen a little longer, Steve, and I'm sure the warts will reveal themselves. Those Magneplanars totally blew me away in the mid 70's too, when I first heard them. But,the dealer warned me that they were incredibly inefficient and needed huge amounts of amplifier power, along with very awkward placement requirements due to their dipole radiation. And even then the bass really required augmentation with a subwoofer. And let's not forget how much better modern Magnepans sound than these original designs. There has been lots of improvement. As for the preamp, well first off, it's a mismatch for that Bryston amp whose 50kOhm input impedance is too low for the preamp, and it causes bass rolloff.By today's standards, a Marantz, 7 for all its supposed mythical qualities, is a very mediocre preamp . As for the 301, well no comment, except that I couldn't help but notice how far off speed it was running in the video. I know, you can adjust it. I got 4 magnepans of which two are newer models... none of them come close to what the tympani can do You can listen to your hifi dealer all you wish, I got 20 pairs of speakers including my the notorious infinity kappa 9, infinity qe, infinity rs2 and a 500l lynnfield (5000usd back in the 90ts) so well 20 years or so after the tympani I gladly invite you over, I had a guy like you the other day walking out with his phone in his hand. Looking for a tympani to replace his sonus Fabers with after a session at my house. Many have no clue how good these speakers can sound. Also many have no clue that magnepan CAN REFURBISH them and bring them up to somewhat better standards. It destroys anything I threw at it (not just by my own account including Audio friends of mine that brought their own gear ) You’re not wrong on low end support needs. However I take a subwoofer any day over the low end of just planar. Subs are designed to produce low end, it exceeds floor standers by a mile no contest. Especially today with the majority of brands offering really good budget intended subs that perform excellent. I am so sick of audiophiles trying to sell the idea a sub is inferior, it’s superior to a shared box with drivers period Give it that, and spacing is not a problem at all .. you can crank these planars up to level insane and still talk to the guy next to you . Just make sure you understand acoustics Also how did you conclude on the video it’s running fast. You can’t, as the frame rate of the camera is what you’re looking it so your point on that is hilariously flawed

Why aren’t idler drive decks made anymore, especially when the Garrard 301 (and other decks like the 401, etc., etc.) are regarded so highly? I’ve even got an old broken Philips idler drive in need of an idler wheel, plinth, plus a lot more, but the mechanics of it seem beautifully made.

My listening test since 1983, which only Magnapan speakers have been able to pass, is a vinyl recording of Rudolph Serkin playing Beethoven's Fifth piano concerto with the New York Philharmonic (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yj3JgJNOBUU.html). The test is can you, with a blindfold, hear that the piano is IN FRONT OF the orchestra. I demand a sound stage with depth as well as left-to-right orientation. I still use my Magnepan Magnaplanars, from 1983. Although not nearly as expensive as the ones you feature, they provide the same complete clarity and transparency. The rest of the system that passed this test was a Crown IC150 preamp and Crown DC300 amp. Sadly, the amps are long dead. I have not yet found a digital audio source that is able to provide the phase/temporal accuracy needed for this test. I welcome any suggestions.

Can I suggest Steve, (not as a demo), but just to reduce that horrendous echo, that you actually play some music thru the gear you're reviewing. It's not for your viewers to sample the true sounds from the gear, as that would not be possible in a mere RU-vid clip, but just to pick up the overall character and content contained within. Maybe you could say....ambience. Sure we are here for the content, but I feel with minimal effort the overall presentation can be taken to the next level. After all....it's almost 2020! Keep up the great work. Cheers!!

lost me at the Bryston 4 B -sorry garbage owned one for approximately 3 weeks and it was so overrated. Just the 20 year warranty was a good marketing tool but this would let down that system in a big way. Compared to an ME 750 or ME 850 it was just flat out killed - i actually carted down my ME 850 and the store staff just couldn't get over how much better it was. I also owned many other amps at the time 1985-91.I am sure they are better now
