It’s a reference to killing someone. In the UK they have memorial benches where when someone dies the bench is covered in flowers, stuffed animals, and pictures of the person as a memorial and a memory to their life.
In football soccer as u call it when u get put on the bench u are hurt or it can mean to kill someone but 99% of the time it means hurt or like the other guy said in the comments people who have passed get a bench with their name on it
