Can you believe I didn’t know a toat and knob was available for the low angle block? Now I have a great reason to keep my low angle block to use as a No 1 and the DX 60 to use as my new go to block plane in narrow height and one handed applications! Thanks again for another great vid Jamie!
They are :( I bought it thay way. Idk how he broke them. I had it before and was rough with it and had no issues. Maybe the first owner dropped it. You have great eyes haha
@@BatCaveCreations Just got the low angle today One reason price Have mine set up like yours But can't get the blade to extend low enough thought about using the upper hole but, that is too high
Someone else said in the comments of another one of your videos that they are going to have to unsubscribe because it will make them spend more money... I feel like that now. You make these tools so appealing. Great video. I'm going to have to limit what I watch 😅
Interesting.Thank you. I got the low angle one with the chamfer fitting - and then got the tote and knob, but the chamfer fitting is the real game-changer for me. It's let me finish things and achieve a next level result.
It's interesting to see that you found the low angle a little unbalanced, I found that too and it was only when I got the tote and knob kit and started using it more as a ~#2-3 bench plane that I found the width and balance felt right (basically a mini smoothing plane, which it excells at). I like my Lie Nielson 102 (and 101) better as a general purpose block plane for running along edges and generally for detail work. I find these larger block planes to be a sort of no-mans land, with the exception of my Lie Neilson 60 1/2 rabbet which is incredible useful when I need to plane up to an edge. Anyway, merry Christmas Jamie!
I agree with you! That LA block is a beast lol tote and knob balance it out lol I like the little Veritas pocket plane for the detail stuff I needed a lateral adjuster the ln 101 didn't have haha A 60.5 r is on my list, I wish veritas made one so I could afford one hahahahha Merry Christmas! Thank you for your support this year!
i have the low angle, it always has the wood knob on it and i have used the tote. both are great additions sometimes. it's my only block plane except for 5 or 6 old stanleys. my favourite old stanley is just as good in use but a real pain to adjust compared to the veritas
Very interesting comparison between these two. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into producing these videos. I have the low angle Veritas with the PMV iron. One suggestion though ... why not demonstrate/test them on end grain ... that truly is one of the best features of a block plane... and while it is very subjective, it would have been helpful to have done some edge chamfering as well ... to see how they felt, etc.
I have the DX60 and I use it on every project. It's a low angle block so cleans up end grain with ease. The perfect 90 deg sides make it a great shooting plane for small pieces. I also use it as small smoothing plane. Veritas also makes a Nickel plated version of the DX (D as in ductile steel) called the NX (N as in Nickel) - yeah their marketing people earning their coin that day.
I had the DX60 and changed it for the LA one. The style is great but as you mentioned, it is not balanced and did not feel good in my hand. I miss the enclosed toe, nice look and good protection against bumps. I love the transformer feature on the LA. Love the front knob. I tried the tote, but I feel that it makes it more like a miniature smoother so I tried the rear button instead and that helps to push forward while keeping my arm low. I love the 3 dots on the side of of yours. Mine has a concave shape like the DX. Did Veritas changed from the 3 dots to the concave or the other way around? Must have a better grip with the 3 dots. Tell me, since you have both styles. What do you prefer as a grip? Concave or 3 dots?
Thank you for sharing! Mine is old lol they have the convex indent now but I prefer the 3 dots over the convex. Because they are perfect for keeping your hands ergonomically spaced in use if you know what I mean lol if you keep an eye on ebay you will see some up for grabs with the dots. :)
I misplaced (or had stolen) my 3 dot Veritas block. Decided to just buy a new one instead of looking for it for a month, and GASP! 3 dots are gone, replaced by the elliptical nightmare that replaced it. 3 dots for life. Felt great, looked F-in sweet. I weep.
Well….. the more I see of all these technical innovations in all hand tools, the more I think that vintage hammer tap adjusted wooden tools are my “steady dogs” as they say down yonder……I am skeptical as hell about all those frighten Allen keys….sorry futurists…… but simplicity rocks…..anyhow….. great video Jamie!!!
I have the low angle and think its great, but I have small hands so it really is a bit unconfortable to use but 100% usable even for me. (stupid question) I bought the tote second hand but didn´t came with any screws do you know which ones it uses?
I don't :/ it would be tough to find the exact replacement tbh because of the way the tote seats on the screws. If you contact Lee Valley they will be able to send you replacement screws
Although it wasn't tested in this video, it might be the case that the low angle block is better for use on a miniature shooting board than the rounded-over shape of the DX60.
That is a good point and it may be cus it has more surface area to reference. I've never used a block on a shooting board but I know I need to make that set up happen haha
I use the NX60 and DX60. I had the Low Angle Block set up with the tote and knob but the tote broke so I sold it cus I have the no 3 size low angle and they were close in size.
@@BatCaveCreationsDo you think the NX60 is with the MUCH higher price? I saw a guy claim the DX60 has a plastic cap. Is that true?! Thanks for what you do.
@GeeDeeBird the NX60 is like the best of the best Veritas has to offer. Robin Lee told the designers so go all out and do all the designing and features they wanted. They did and the plane is phenomenal! I love every bit of it. But does it function better than the DX... I am leaning towards no. But want to say yes because it is so beautiful so it may be just thinking it's better lol I do believe the DX cap is a type of metal infused resin like they do for their saws but I'm not 100% sure. The performance of the plane outweighs the cap material imo. No matter which one you pick I think you will be happy with them. Great features and performance accross the board.
@@BatCaveCreations great vid by the way. Recently I bought my first block plane from Lowes made by Jorgensen (low angle). It was only $35... And was wondering if there were other block planes with better quality right out of the box. On mine, the adjustable mouth is slightly higher than the sole so it needs work to make it perfectly flat.
Thank you! I love the Jorgensen line of planes. They are awesome! They do have some quality control issues thi. They are better than it was but I'm hearing there are still some issues, like yours unfortunately :/ I hope it is an easy fix!!
@@BatCaveCreations I really like their smallest trim plane. Just had to hone the blade, and strop it. This little guy is super handy for rounding the corners of boards, things like that.
@@martinhawrylkiewicz2025 that plane is always on my bench when I'm working on a project. I love that thing!! I want to get two just incase they stop making it so I have a back up. But I doubt they will stop making it haha
The Veritas apron is one I haven't been able to use yet :( I did have the LN 102 and sold it. Just didn't use that size. I wasn't a big fan of the bridge city block it was uncomfortable to hold lol thats really the only reason haha
Meh ! Poseur tool. Stanley 60.5. The most handy block plane ever made. Easy to adjust, comfortable in the hand. I work the ass off of mine. Go through a blade a year. Its thirty-five years old now. Good as the day I bought it.
