The 12-960 I have is made in England and I’m not sure if the current new planes are exactly the same as mine. So shop carefully or opt for the old ones.

Really good overview. I was wondering for the longest time how these planes compare. Thank you!!

Thank you for the comment. It was a fun comparison, The heft of the newer plane just appeals to me, though the 60-1/2 is the true classic. Thanks for watching.

I like block planes too. I know you can do everything with a smoothing plane but a block plane just feels nice and comfortable in the hand. Especially for removing the arris on MDF/PLY or laminate edges. 👍🏻😊

My new Stanley has been a real pain. The sole was conveyed, not level at all. The bedding of the blade was not even level! Hours of sanding finally leveled the bottom and another hour of filing and using a Dremmel tool got the blade level at the mouth. It cuts, but now has trouble holding a setting when used on hard wood. Never again, Stanley, never, ever again.

Bummer. Even though mine was “newer” than my old 60-1/2 it wasn’t new new. Probably just don’t make things the way they used to Sorry to hear it.
