Blockbuster Video Has Become An Alaskan Tourist Attraction (HBO)

For many Alaskans streaming online is not a good option, so movie night means Blockbuster night. While the vast majority of Blockbusters in the U.S. have closed down, there are few still hanging on. Today, there are only 10 left in the entire country, and six of those are in Alaska. But the dark, long winters and sparse layout of Alaska allows Blockbusters to do pretty well, especially when Wifi is substantially more expensive than in other states.
VICE News speaks with loyal customers at one of the last Blockbusters in the U.S. about why they love their old school movie night.

I REALLY miss blockbuster. I miss walking in and browsing and letting different types of movies jump out at you. There was just something about walking in and reading the backs and actually sitting down and watching it because you spent time picking it out.
@atypical_moto

Ahkilalah For me it was more about the video games but the blockbuster experience was something special. Like your experience with the movies, the games were more special when you had to commit to one or two for the week and you spent 20 minutes reading the game boxes to make sure they had Co-op campaign so you can play with your friends or whatever the case was at the time.

Ahkilalah There's just something about looking for a specific movie but not finding it because Blockbuster doesn't have the hard physical copy. And spending gas money to get there. And I sure do miss those late fees and the overpriced movie snacks! I don't see how Blockbuster is better than the options we have today, which are far more convenient.

As a senior milliannial, this was incredibly heartwarming. Blockbuster was low key magic in my day. When movies are instantaneously available as they are now, you check out a few minutes and move on if it isn't gratuitous to your taste. Back then you read a synopsis, made a conscientious decision, then watched it whether it was what you expected or not. It broadened your horizon of opinion which we don't regularly have motivation to do today.

Bookstore are not an equal comparison because you generally pay a similar amount for an ebook as you do for a physical book; one month of netflix costs about what 2 dvd rentals returned in a timely fashion did. Blockbusters was a really special place for my brother and I, our dad would take us and most of the times let us each pick one movie to rent. The excitement would begin the very moment we would notice our dad picking up the DVDs to return them. Quickly after witnessing that we would rush to the car with him to hopefully influence his choices or get a chance to pick out a movie. True magic and excitement was felt simply by walking by so many movie and video game cases and scrutinizing their covers. I really miss those moments and time with my brother and dad.

We didn't have blockbuster, but we did have Video city, alsona dvd rental. I used to rent out movies with my dad when I came to stay with him for the weekend. Those were memories that I really loved so much.

This hurts me. I want to pick up my movies and read the backs again. I'd trade my Netflix to bring rental places back again. Especially since Netflix has been focusing on original stuff they've been bleeding out the rest of their content and shrinking their library.

I REALLY miss Netflix. I miss scrolling in and browsing and letting different types of movies jump out at you. There was just something about sitting down in the couch with my friends and discussing which movie to watch and spend hours, HOURS trying to choose the best one.

I love video rental stores. There's nothing quite like browsing the shelves, checking out the old weird movies and bickering with the SO what to watch. You can't pick up a movie on Netflix and say "look at this crazy old crap!"

"Give them nothing, but take from them everything" ......yea that was Blockbuster's business model at the bitter end there. Just clawing as much money from their last few customers as possible, and then desperately throwing it at their creditors.

"it's the difference between a book and an ebook, we've got the real product" Uhh no, CD's are just files. The REAL product would be a big ass roll of film and a projector.

They imply the lower 48 like everywhere in the lower 48 states has good capability wifi with no data caps but a lot of the continental US now has data caps and no 1tb is not enough for families especially with 4k hd video streaming becoming more normative

I miss video rental places. I grew up in a small town, so on Friday and Saturday nights you'd go rent your video games and movies and also run into your buddies which would usually turn in to everyone getting together to watch the movies you all rented.
