Also, laerynn is definitely the primary cause here. Sure, zerxus had a hand in it, but laerynn and her arrogance are the main reason for the sundering of the tree, and therefore the reason for the calamity. None of it would have happened, at least not in this way, without laerynn - cerrit was definitively not part of this reason as well.

I thought of another one. The Calamity is guranteed, right? So even if they play all their cards right, and stop the city from landing by spending all its energy, stopping all the demons and infernals from succeeding, doing everything right, they're guaranteeing the Gou'Drashari, who need that energy, and live on top of a mountain that sealed 2 primordials, don't get it. Combine that with apparently the biggest surge of wild magic in living memory...Even if they did their utmost, it's the Kobyashi Maru. The Calamity was already guranteed, they just chose the shape of it.

@optimistprime3192
@optimistprime3192 10 месяцев назад
I think this concept extends to how they work in combat to a point: the characters are quite selfish, some more than others, but as the players do everything they can to keep each other alive, you get a sense that for as selfish as the characters are, they are selfless for each other in their tight-knit family that is The Ring of Brass.
@uncertain_zee
@uncertain_zee 10 месяцев назад
@@optimistprime3192i think the part where patia thanks laerryn for saving her, and then laerryn responds basically saying that she needs to get her device to work encapsulates that perfectly. Their characters are selfish but need each other for their goal, and the players portray that well. They're selfish in a way that's realistic to the story and that actively moves the story forward.

Power corrupts. All hold very powerful positions in Avalir which is the most advanced city in the whole world. Of course they want to become more powerful. In an age where there really are no limits or rules on magic yet, you'd dream big and let no one stand in your way. The members of The Ring of Brass want the best for Avalir which further benefits them and their individual goals. To many others that could look like selflessness since they are serving Avalir but it really isn't. Isn't politics insane!

The instant we learned Cerrit had kids last episode I felt a whole new kind of dread set in. We always heard about how the Calamity was brought on by prideful, hubris-driven wizards who sought to overtake gods and were destroyed for their arrogance, but this was a reminder that there was more than that in the city. There were children who liked to make up code names and play Spy with their dad. There were teenagers who just wanted to sneak out to a cool party and talk with cute girls. There were single parents doing their best to make sense of the world. So as soon as we found out about Cerrit's kids, I clung to one small hope: even if all this is doomed, even if there's no stopping what's to come, I can pray that at least one family can get out of this alive.

I'm still in awe how Brennan organized the final confrontation at the tree in a way that it felt like a movie script with tighter and tighter cuts the more you get to the moment of catastrophe. And then right before it happens juxtaposing it with a concerned father trying to safe his family as he feels something horrible is about to happen. How he managed to do this on improv is nothing short of miraculous.

imma be honest, I don't like how he railroaded that bit at all... i know they gotta end the world and shit but I hoped it would/will be more elegant than that. At the end he pretty much forced it even though aabriah was stopping and xerxus who could've easily counterspelled it again was basically put on hold (Lou probably could've done something too, but I think they just let it happen because they saw brennan basically just doing it himself)

Speaking to his best friend in a way he’s never spoken to him before, his speech in general so radically different than how he spoke in the previous episodes. I really like how Brennan aproaches insight in general: not only he doesn't use it as "he's telling the truth/he's lying", he adds depth to human emotion, making it complex "you realize it's a plea" was fucking awesome, also using it as an ability in itself to rationalize things that happen in the world not only against other people/creatures, which should be an obvious use of the ability but never seen it in any games. Lastly, the auto-insight to Sam was fucking poetic. I was already sold on Brennan as a DM but now I will definitely check Dimension 20.

I enjoy it too. It's less a straight telling of the facts and more into the "human" psychology of it all, which is great since insight is built off of instinct and human experiences. A multi-century long war that consumed the lives of 2/3rds of the world's total population. This was last day before the calamity. The Betrayers and their servants are in motion. Throats are being slit across the world as the Betrayers set the stage for the war they know will come when the Prime Deities realize they have no choice but to fight while holding nothing back. I question how one would tell the story of this final day before all out war without painting the PCs red with blood. The Ring of Brass was always going to go down fighting to the last one standing. They all have goals and ambitions that conflict with each other specifically Nydis and Learryn. I feel like Nydis is a cautious gambler, like he’s willing to bet all in if he has every information he can get his hands on. In the conflict of to destroy or to not destroy is clear he wanted time, while Learryn felt there was no time. I think in escape, they all worked under someone for so long together it was easy to see they weren’t going to fight, but in this they were kings of their own spheres of influence. I don't entirely blame Laerynn for her folly with the tree. Destiny (Brennen) was very clearly setting her up for failure there. That being said the entire scene once again speaks to the arrogance of our wizards, Laerynn automatically assumes that the thing standing in her way is malevolent and that she knows better than everyone else in the room, while Patia immediately ignores Laerynn and Nydas' obvious breakdown thinking it to be beneath her and instead seeks the tree's knowledge... They truly brought this on themselves.
@mayaenglish5424
@mayaenglish5424 Год назад
I mean in fairness to Patia, I think she was more thinking that they were on a timeline and didn't have time for this shit lol. But I definitely agree about all the other stuff. I Blame Laerryn for everything involving the tree right up until the last part where it stabbed her ex husband and her bff because they sought too much information and then I was like, ok that's understandable, but we're in this position because of you so I'm still mad lol.

@@pascal6871 I mean I think she's addicted to knowledge, but I actually don't think she'll stop at _Nothing_ I think it's probably a short list of things she would stop for, but Patia at least seems like she has an active list with like 2 or 3 items on it. Laerryn on the other hand... the only thing that even remotely got her to pause for a secund was Loquacious.
@driftnick7022
@driftnick7022 Год назад
But here's the thing, I believe Laerryn's actions are entirely reasonable. She first thought to kill the tree by hubris, both for achieving her goal and to possibly mend what happened with Evandrin (even though I'm a bit surprised that no one really thought of the idea that killing the tree might not bring him back and instead take him with it). Then she was made to reconsider, but as soon as it impaled Patia and Loquatious she went back to murder mode, but this time to save her love and her friend. The consecuence is disastrous for sure, but her very last action was motivated purely by the love she has towards her closest allies, and that's not an easy choice to make burdened by all of the emotions. It proved to be a mistake, but it was not without reason. I also believe part of the responsability lies on the druids of the Gau Drashari who didn't want to disclose what was the true nature of the tree and what it did. Sure, they were correct in being worried about some arrogant wizard wanting to use it for their own gain, but consider the opposite scenario: wouldn't it be prudent to state its purpose in the event that its existance is threatened in the face of someone ignorant of its role, and why is it important to protect it? Like Brennan said at the end, they may not have had hubris, but their lack of trust is also partially the reason why, centuries later, far removed as it may be, everything culminates and plays out the way it just did.

It's not like they had seconds left to decide with no going back either. Seems like the obvious course for his character would be to help stop Laerynn from impulsively breaking something with zero idea what effect that would have when they have plenty of opportunity to take a breath, sit down and examine this thing properly. It's not like she'd made any compelling arguments to suggest it was really necessary or that it wouldn't immediately kill them all. It wasn't even a case of her having to do it immediately or missing her window, they had many hours left for her project to succeed. To me it felt like Sam's indecision came from him talking himself out of stopping her because he as a player knows the scenario's predetermined trajectory, not because it's actually what his character would do. True but then again loqatious would have Don ethat regardless if her secret was dangerous or Not and more importantly has no idea what that was and we cant even say if people actually would have stopped it. The way Cerrit almost whispers "I love you, too," is the most crushingly real and emotional delivery I've heard from any voice actor, maybe even actor in general. It held all of the weight of his great love and growing anxiety. Like a smell of death in the air, he knows the end is coming and this man, this dutiful, family-oriented man, is terrified of losing his most cherished people. It's hard for me to fully empathize with stories and people who aren't right in front of my face -- especially when it's fiction. I can understand and sympathize, but I don't often FEEL what any piece of entertainment is trying to sell me. So it's incredibly special to me when something/someone breaks through whatever wall that is and makes me feel something that isn't mine. I can count on one hand the amount of times a movie/show/game has made me cry, and this one sentence, an unspoken prayer, broke me. Beautifully done, Travis. And kudos to Brennan for being able to channel such a demonstrably good and lovable son that any father would be proud of. Teamwork so dreams work.

I think this is one of the first times we see Sam, who is usually so smart and always knows what to do, actually look like he is completely lost and borderline panicking. The cast is honestly amazing in this show, everyone delivers brilliant performances of characters who struggle to find their place in all these schemes.

@incognitoburrito6020
@incognitoburrito6020 Год назад
@@d4s0n282 Doesn't feel like sidelining imo, especially since Nydas has a similar role. They're not front-and-center involved with the making of the Calamity like Zerxes and Laeryn, they don't provide a grounding reference like Cerrit, and they don't wrap through the intrigue like Patia. Instead, they kind of show us what Avalir _is_ when it's not about to fall from the sky. They're an emotional core instead of a plot center. It's easy to forget what it would be like to be in this situation, and I think Sam's done a pretty good job of conveying that. Just because his character isn't as intimately involved with the core plot doesn't mean he got sidelined necessarily. Edit: sam also chose to play a character whose main thing is being a reporter in a game he knew would, very quickly, be about an apocalyptic demon invasion. I think he was aware of the sort of role he'd have

I love what Brennan does at the end of this episode! *MASSIVE SPOILERS INCOMING!!* Everyone’s blood is pumping, tension is building, stress is rising, everyone is fighting each other, no one can figure out what’s going to happen next; it’s all chaos. Patia and Loquatious are stuck to each other and to the Tree and seeing visions that no one else around them can see; Nydas is afraid and trying to stop Laerryn from casting a spell to harm the tree, head swimming with a prophecy of the destruction of the world and all he’s worked for. Laerryn just wanting to stop the thing that is not letting her perform the bit of magic that is her life’s work and somehow hurt her friend, trapped him in it somehow, and is actively, currently hurting her best friend, and her love, but stopping so as to not cause her love to be afraid of her. And Zerxus, just trying to read a piece of paper, to get information about what this thing is, then seeing his dead husband’s face in the Tree, and yearning to see him one last time. The Tree, trying to prevent Patia and Loquatious from seeing too much and going too far, trying to protect itself, trying to make them let go by causing them pain. Laerryn sees this, sees this f*cking Tree try and impale her people, in her city, and casts Blight. Now, in a movie, this would be the part where it goes into slow-mo; the whole scene shifts as you follow this beam of magic slowly hitting the tree and causing it to rot. But you can’t go into slow-mo in real life. Everything is moving so fast; how do you get everyone to slow down? Switch POV. He knows that there’s another player, another character, not in the room, who is about to discover something heart-wrenching and tragic. So: Cut to Cerrit, racing across town to his office, trying to see what the cultists found, where his partner is, call his kids to get them to come home; try and do something, anything to save his family with the few hours (he thinks) he has left before disaster. And then he finds the scene: his desk, cleared and empty, all evidence and tools and everything that could have given another clue as to how to stop or delay all this gone; Sending to his son, trying to show the importance of the situation without scaring him; his partner, dead, with two spell bottles in his hand so that Cerrit’s kids can get to their mom. Cerrit, flying, as fast as he can, to pack a bag for his kids, not knowing that at the same time, Blight hits the Tree. Get everyone, audience and players and even Brennan himself, to take a breath, to let the tragedy of the situation sink into their heart. Everyone has slowed down. Now, as the Betrayer steps foot into the city, onto Exandria, the event that kicks off the start of the Calamity, everyone is listening, everyone is paying rapt attention. It showcases a master level understanding of storytelling, and how to manipulate a narrative. Brennan is amazing!

can we all just appreciate Aabria for a minute? The way she played her character. The woman responsible for keeping the heart of avalir afloat would definitely have the hubris and ambition to destroy the calix if it meant taking their city to the next level. But her flaw was her love for Loquatius. The way he looked at her in fear - she wanted him to see and love the best of her. She stopped casting blight. She actually had a character arc. Before their marriage ended, I think she wouldn't have stopped. Her ambition would have seen her through. But she developed to someone who had friends and loved people. She stopped. It's so important to reiterate that when she finally cast blight, it wasn't in the name of her ambition, it was to save her friends. How brilliant is that? It's the character development we would want to see in a story but it's so perfect in how realistic it was; the arc was twisted to bring about destruction. Brilliant!

I loved that moment. It wasn’t because this tree was stealing HER magic, or ruining her experiment. Her stopping was the important part. She stopped…. But the tree tried to kill her friend, and her husband (notice he wasn’t called Ex by this point). So that “I cast blight” came out SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL than the first time. Her whole demeanor changed from “crazed” to “rage”

I completely and utterly believe that a character this smart can and would be this incredibly stupid, when something goes against what they want.
