During my recent trip to the UK I was given the wonderful opportunity to ride alongside one of the many Volunteer Blood Bikers that deliver vital medical supplies between NHS facilities across the UK and Ireland.
Hopefully this little video will give you an idea of what is involved and what the great men and women of the Blood Bikes do to make the service work.

I was a courier rider over 30 years ago, I did a couple of blood deliveries for City Link. Set off with my white box with red crosses on it. Trying to be as quick as possible on the M5 when I was intercepted by two motorway Police patrol cars. They were great, holding the traffic back while I cut across 3 lanes onto the hard shoulder, then off we went, one car in front and the other behind, at a speed I wouldn't have wanted to do without them. Got to the hospital in record time. Great to see this service has expanded, and will be sending a donation. Great work!

Cracking video matey, without the Key service these guys provide, I’m sure of which helped with my beloved wifes treatment for AML, where Blood, Bone Marrow and Platelets were all key to her treatment, it would not of been as smooth or as positive as it has been. Amazing people, and has given me the shove to contact the Nottinghamshire Blood Bike Service and I am in talks now of starting my advanced riding qualification so I can hopefully join there team. Really pleased that a video has captured the amazing work the army of volunteers provide the public without which would be a drain on an already stretched incredible service the NHS gives to us. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I think they'd be very happy to accept your help in whatever capacity. Shame about the limitations on shoulder checks though.
@chegson2wheels686
@chegson2wheels686 6 лет назад
Limitations on "lifesaver" is caused by spending 30 years as the local crash-test dummy(12 morons so far have crashed into me)I used to drive for a living until all these crashes where I was blameless left me with a knackered spine & needing psychological help before I could overcome my fear of driving.The 30 odd years of swallowing shedloads of meds has also left me with memory issues(hence why I keep forgetting to visit the stand)I regularly see blood bikes in the area as 90% of our hospital attendees are transported via ambulance the 35-40 miles up the road to Carlisle,despite our hospital being 80-90% complete after total refurb/new builds(£90+ million spent so far)as they just cannot get staff.Also,the air ambulance is frequently called upon due to the geography of our county.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 6 лет назад
Wow. I'm sorry to hear that mate. That's really bad luck / really bad drivers! The health service sounds like it's generally in about as much of a sh%t state as the roads over there at the moment.
@chegson2wheels686
@chegson2wheels686 6 лет назад
Please don't get me started on the roads (lack of) condition,my CBR 600 fork seals "exploded" within days of the bike passing it's MOT when I hit a pothole(short distance from home is a huge hole that has been "repaired" frequently,only for the busses ripping the repair out & scattering gravel around the hole)This road through the estate has huge holes where the centre lines were burnt away for the new lines to be painted,I've tried to get this road on video but gave up when my PC decided to crash & reinstall of Win 10 removed my editing software/most of my recordings etc. Yup,I've no luck whatsoever lol

no I think they are donated by dealers or others so it could be almost any make of 1000cc plus tourer style bike! such a FJRs or R1200RTs and so on! it has also to be fitted out in a similar way to police and paramedic bikes!

I was strictly forbidden from touching this bike. Not even allowed into the depot! (Actually a bit miffed by the attitude of this particular branch, they didn't even say thanks for the uninvited publicity!). It's different depending on the branch of blood bikers and how well funded they are. Just as toorest trikie says, they're often donated by dealerships (or at least very good deals are given). Otherwise some absolute superheros use and maintain their own bikes for this good work.

In Sussex we use our oen bikes and our own fuel for year, then we are allowed to use the fleet bikes if we want to . Some do, some don't. Our fleet bikes are either bought using money we raise, or some have been donated outright by other charities like Rotary or Masons

Andy Man Cam as an active blood biker the Fjr is the only bike officially approved for blood bike use by the National Blood Bike Service. Those carriers are specifically designed to suite the blood boxes as used by the National Blood Transfusion Service . They are quite large and need that space to support and secure them . Also we move Brest Milk around in similar sized containers .

Hey Hank, it's just as Sean Rima says. They have no priveleges at all and have to obey all the same traffic laws as the rest of us. The one astonishing difference is that with that livery on the bikes the traffic parts like the Red sea after Moses sneezes!

Good video and good work for every biker involved but Andy for gods sake keep your hands on the handlebars mate. your left hand is flying all over the place as if your were conducting an orchestra!! If f you want to become an advanced biker you'r going to have to glue that hand down. te he lol. Ps. Am I right in assuming that although these bikes are mainly used by civilians they can be ridden like police officers. I also know that some blood bikes have working flashing blue lights and police type sirens that can be used to inform or warn other road users of their presence. That they can exceed the speed limits and ride through lights etc just like a police officer can if they consider it urgent enough. Is that understanding correct?
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 года назад
Obviously, in the right situations, the hand is planted! But for straight line riding, you could take both hands off on a cobbled street and the bike will still find a way through on it's own! You're absolutely right about the rules though. Blood bikers have to adhere to all the same rules as normal road users. The blue lights are more for show and use is restricted to when it's absolutely necessary to clear traffic.

@@AndyManCam So are you saying that under the right condition its ok to ride one handed and actually condoning one handed or no handed riding with a powerful motorcycle on a road as being ok.????? I don't think that many advanced rider would agree with that even if one can ride without hands on bars on the straights it's more of the bikes ability to do that and not exactly a a skill that one wants to encourage whilst on the road As regards using blue lights, bells and whistles etc. I have just seen a video of a training run and in it the rider went through lights just changed to red against him and used his siren for other vehicle to stop or rather not move forward. against him. He continues in a 30 mph. area and was obviously exceeding the speed limit. Causing cars to move aside for him and then overtaking the first cars on the approach to 2 pedestrian crossings. I don't think that all of this this is legal whether or not it's an emergency. If It were an emergency I would think the authorities would think twice about using civilians when they have enough professional advanced riders and drivers to get the job done. Quite a lot of blood work, in fact the vast majority is menial tasking ie samples for testing etc. and not emergency work. Don't get me wrong I do admire those that give their free time at their own cost to help others as I do as a volunteer rider and at present a part time chemist delivery service. Delivering meds to those that are stuck in at home for up to 12 weeks.

I’m sure they would love to use advanced riders from the services, but don’t forget that the staff budget is zero pounds and that the riders put themselves through advanced rider training. No brainer for the charity to use civilian volunteers really. No idea what the deal is with the video you saw. My understanding was that they have no allowances over other road users. I even heard tales of a blood bike being regularly stopped by the police. Though that was very contentious and heresay filled account. As for riding one handed, i think you’re over egging the custard somewhat. I given you an inch and you’ve tried to hang me with it. Is taking your hands off of the handlebars forbidden? Can you tell me that you never take one hand off the bars? When you do take one hand off the bars, does your bike turn into an uncontrollable, angry bronco? I said that it was situational. I have never once in 16 years of riding not had my hands on the bars when I really wished I had. I’ve also taken the opportunity to prove that I can complete an emergency stop with only my braking hand on the bars. You don’t use the bars to hold yourself on the bike, or to brace yourself as you brake, you use your legs. Furthermore I was once challenged, by an advanced rider, to take one hand off of the bars while I was in a relatively fast and tight sweeping bend. The reason being, he said, that mid turn, if you’re putting ANY turning inputs into the bars (assuming the turn is a constant radius and obstacle free) you’re doing it wrong. You set up the turn with countersteer and after that the bike does all the work. Also if you can’t let go of the bars at that point, you’re holding on too tight and probably further unbalancing the machine. Of course, none of this is advice or gospel but rather just showing you that my not having both hands on the bars the whole time is not simply because i don’t care about safety, good riding, or because I want to look cool.

@@AndyManCam Andy I did say it with a bit of humour as seen with the 'te he lol' at the end that should have intimated that it was not too serious a point being made. Don't you just hate it when riding and you see an idiot on a cycle riding on and off the pavement and road and with their hands off the handlebars and on their phones. But then again maybe some road users are ok with that. I believe that you believe that what you are doing is ok and safe but its frowned upon in advanced riding and something that would not to be encouraged. However its your way of riding and let's leave it at that. As regards to civilian blood bikers using blue lights and sirens there is a video and look for a 'blood bikers training video,' its only a few minutes long and takes place in Burnley, lancs and he does just what I said. Rides like a police officer using all the blues and twos and breaking quite a few laws.

That was really interesting but am assuming your not an advanced driver. As an advanced biker would never to drive and vid and commentate all at once. given the risk it creates for other road users, yourself and pedestrians that it’s ironic you were following a blood biker.
@AndyManCam
@AndyManCam 4 года назад
An advanced biker comments constantly on the ride that they’re having. Either internally, or out loud. Being unable to talk constantly while riding immediately discounts you from being able to qualify as an advanced rider. If you were an advanced rider, and therefore qualified to make this comment, you would know this.

@@AndyManCam in a traffic stop we can just pass. like no problem what so ever. when people see blue lights you can literally see people kilometers away already making space and of course there is this 1 fiat 500 than or bmw (and it's usally 1 of those 2 really weird XD ) that won't notice. and than people start to use their horn. nah we are quite respectful to emergency services. and filtering on a normal bike: most people stand on the middle of there lane so you can almost pass with 2 bikes. and than you have the same 2 ... typical car types again that almost park it in to a truck. i'll just pass them on the left side and rev a lot. it's funny when you see them all shocked because they didn't notice XD hahaha
