I'm one of those who answers the phone, our group Freewheelers Bristol, we covered covid 24/7 I was one of those controllers/coordinators as we call it. Still doing Freewheelers now, in my 6th year.😀 some of our volunteers are both coordinators/riders, but there are always other committee positions to do.

Nice video. Being doing it past 5 years over 3 different BB groups.. My experience has been some weeks when on duty could be 1200+ miles on bike, sometimes might be using one of their cars, if weather very poor ie snow / ice and during Covid had a large van for the PPE deliveries. That could be heavy work!! Still going strong up here in far north with HaIBB. Weather has bike put away for winter as icy conditions often on higher ground. Good craic and sense the appreciation from NHS staff for our efforts to help them. Recommend for bikers / drivers.

I have really been moved and encouraged by your story. I also live in Nottingham and have a full bike licenses (class A) obtained in 1998 and full driving license to include categories C1 & C2. I am interested in supporting the Nottingham Blood Bikers on a voluntary basis and would appreciate a chat. Would you be open to this? Great job you all do in supporting the NHS.

you need to do IAM roadsmart or ROSPA and get your advanced rider test, then join a local advanced club and apply to be a blood rider

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been looking at volunteering for the WhiteKnights in Yorkshire, unfortunately I fall out of their catchment area for the time being (but only temporary hopefully) I’ve got my IAM and RoSPA pass and my Airvest and white boo tooth helmet at the ready should my phone ring. 🤞 I’ve just ordered the book, thanks for the Heads up 👍👏 Thanks again Ride Safe!

Do you pay for your own fuel?
@kickinzeds

Yes, normally BB Riders pay for their own fuel, although during Covid BP fuel kindly extended their free fuel to emergency services to Blood bikes.

Each group varies - at Nottinghamshire all we ask for is the volunteer's time, so we pay for everything, including fuel.
@snappo20

@@kickinzedswe’d only pay for our own fuel if we did a run on our own bikes - if on a group bike, the fuel is paid for by the charity. During lockdown BP did indeed give us free fuel, a lovely gesture.

Do you get blue lights? when i went for a tour of fleet vehicles at notts only some of the bikes had lights on? i don't see the point in the cars with just livery on with no blue lights as surely you'd just be like any other person on the road stuck in traffic etc? so far the fleet cars i have just seen in traffic like everyone else which kind of makes them pointless surely? i could throw some stickers on my car what would be the difference lmfao?

Not sure whose vehicles you've been shown Tom, but it wasn't Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes.

No. Schedule 19 of the Road Safety Act means Blood Bikes are NOT an exempted body in England & Wales so cannot use blue lights or sirens nor go through red lights or exceed speed limits. Where groups buy Yamaha FJR1300A bikes, they come with blue lights and sirens fitted. Blood bike groups have to disable the lights and sirens by removing the fuses. In Eire, Scotland and NI the rules are different and they can use blue lights when clinically authorised. (but only when authorised by a named clinician)

From what I’ve read I believe being able to having blue lights is an ever so slightly different matter to being able to disregard rta rules. A blood bike should always have to obey the rta. The lights though is either confused or interpreted differently in different regions.
