"Sometimes I wonder if god will ever forgive us for what we've done to each other. Then I look around and I realize god left this place a long time ago."
More than you.....have seen much of that....aint pretty. Ya see things....go through things...changes how ya look at the world. Never looks the same again....
As someone who is part south african, I can say he did a pretty good job with the accent, he looses it on certain words, but it's still pretty damn good.
Really that I think is the first most ridiculous thing I realized. I don't like his acting in this movie as well. The only movie I think he did bad. Though he won an oscar even for it. Weird to me.
Yes, he was Zimbabwean (More Rhodesian), so the accent would've been much more British settler, but (in the movie) he spent a lot of time with the South African Army and Mercs, with the Portuguese accent in Angola, the French connotations in the Congolese dialect, the Arabic influences in both white Dutch cultures and Northern Sudanese, it really is quite hard to get to any of the accents right, but there is a very heavy South African sway to his accent, with the Rhodesian slant to native English
I really love how it showed the reality of life for whites in South Africa and Rhodesia. They weren't evil, just farmers who feared what would happen when blacks took over, and then their worst fears came true
No. Segregating, murdering, and disenfranchising people is wrong and "evil." That doesn't excuse violence of blacks on whites. But defending segregation and apartheid is just as wrong and unjust.
"sometimes i wonder if god can forgive us for what we've done to each other. Then i look around and i realise, God left this place a long time ago" favorite quote from this movie"
Awesome film, this is most moving scene, how Archer just melts down. I love it when tough guys come undone emotionally. Just gets to me. Similarly when Will Hunting finally falls apart in his therapists office 'it's not your fault' I must have replayed it a hundred times. I don't own this movie (yet), so thanks for posting the clip so i can watch it again and again. Leo, you're the man!!
Magical soundtrack to go along with one of the best movies I have ever seen. Great story, ending, action and drama. Very emotional at the end. More movies like this please!! Can't believe it didn't get an oscar cos it definately deserved one. Definately Thumbs up for me =)
The 32 Battlaion was the most decorated unit in the SADF. And yes it comprised of mostly blacks with white NCO's and Officers. It was truely one of the best Special Forces (if you can say that) units of all time. The men who served felt betrayed by their country when it was disbanded in 93/94. Still an excellent performance by DeCaprio in this film. I have to say one of his best.
Zimbabwean and South African accents are totally different. Just to foreign ears they sound the same. It can be sometimes insulting if you say im from Zimbabwe and then someone responds by saying Oh i thought you were from South Africa. They are different countries with different cultural backgrounds. The Zimbabwean/Rhodesian accent derives mainly from british colonialism whereas Afrikaans has a strong dutch heritage.
Leonardo is probably THE only actor to get the accent pretty much bang on! It's his mannerisms and use of colloquialisms that are the most amazing! He clearly studied hard for this role and nailed it! The 'hey' and the 'ja'. He is brilliant!
Leo should have got his oscar for this powerful role! Never watched his movies when he was younger but since he became a man I cant keep my eyes off him!
"sometimes i wonder ...god will ever forgive for wht we've done to each other ...then i look around and realise ...god left this place long time ago..." best dialouge and best movie ever...!!
I never watched the full movie. I got up and left, upset when seeing it on tv, due to it being so true. Here I am. Living in South Africa. Him telling the story about his parents... its true here... and even... worse... I want to watch this movie and finish it, but I don't if I could stomach it. I hear these things on the radio, tv, media and pretty much everywhere all the time. I feel like I've had my fill and that the movie isn't necessary for me to finish watching. He's a brilliant actor. His accent is really really good
so true, I left that "godforsaken" continent a long time ago... I pray for whites to get out of South Africa asap, because Zimbabwe 2.0 will soon be there.
Coz in the end after all, the sand of Africa is red... my ancestors died for this land. I encourage many people to leave this shithole, but I'm staying with the rest. When this country goes down, I'll go with it. It's too difficult to leave as well. Many would if they could. I know many. But I don't intend on dying either. And I don't intend on seeing the final destruction of it either. We will do what we must when the time comes. If war is declared against us, we will do what we can to stay safe and keep our families safe.
sometimes i wonder..will god ever forgive us for what we have done to each other.. and then i realized.. god left this place a long time ago. best line of the scene !
I don't care what anyone says about the accent. The best way to find out if it works is to go onto South African Movie Websites, use Google Translate to translate to comments from people reviewing the movie. I have done so and the people themselves think DiCaprio's accent is spot on. Those who mock it have never heard the real accent. I always find it sad that American's like foreign actors using American accents but laugh at American actors using foreign accents. Why? Because they think foreign accents are funny and wont to laugh at things that sound different.
As a born and raised South African male who speaks both English and Afrikaans fluently on a native level, I can confirm that his accent is extremely well done. Had he not been a famous celebrity, he might have passed for a local here if he wanted to :P
Destined for Damnation I just got back from South Africa and now, this sounds wrong to me, I don't know if it were the type of people I met or what, but to me, most of the accents were more pronounced than this. I visited Jo'burg, PE, Cape and Cape Town and spent a lot of time with a guy from Nelspuit and none of their accents sounded quite like Dicaprio's
Will J. Well I have met quite a few people who speaks like he does. Also keep in mind that the character he plays has a combination of South African and Zimbabwean accents...
Destined for Damnation Yeah, true, I guess that must play a part in the accent. On a different note, South Africa is awesome, I want to move there now xD
I love Blood Diamond, it`s a fucking great movie. Good acting, strong story and DiCaprio`s as Danny Archer is his best character ever IMO :-) Just badass. He nailed that african accent (Not african but Iv`e heard people say he really got it right).
Danny says exactly a similar line to what Bruce Willis' character did in Tears of The Sun "God left this country years ago"... thought anybody might be interested.
i was so pissed about maddy and archer relationship in this movie they never got together and never even kissed this is so sad cuz they were obviously in love with each other ;( but the movie is AWSOME and this scene too one of the best in this movie it really shows the emotional evolution of the character thanks for sharing!! ;))
@fightinside1 i think so cuz i've noticed that even people that aren't fans of his think he's hot in this movie i like him in everything but that's because i am a HUGE FAN
"the fanatic is perpetually incomplete & insecure. he cannot generate self-assurance out of his individual resources but finds it only by clinging passionately 2 whatever support he happens 2 embrace." "he embraces a cause not because of its justness & holiness but because of his desperate need 4 something 2 hold on 2." Eric Hoffer
thank you. but you know i'm just so tired of hearing people feel sorry for themselves. when i watch this, especially when he talks about the death of his parents, it truly gives my life perspective. and although it is a movie, sierra lione is a real country and real people have died there unjustly.
@dorian1880 Mine too; I'm just waiting until the Academy recognizes his talent. It's taken him several years to develop, but currently, it's impeccable.
Rhodesia developed and maintained a powerful and professional military. In June 1977, Time magazine reported that man for man, the Rhodesian army ranks among the world's finest fighting units.
@SherbetLollipop the accent from d9 is specifically from Gauteng and around the east rand part of Johannesburg( someone who isnt a native eng speaker). to me he sounds a bit like someone from Natal.but I think most whites from SOUTHERN afRICAN COUNTRIES.- have a similiar english accent only the slang terms vary
leonardo is telling the truth in this scene. how the world is today. people dont care bout each other. Love is very rare in this world. God is Love. If their is no love. no God. that is truth about this world
