I’m in a season of life where I don’t get to fish much. Every year, we come up to the lake for vacay and I work on my cast. One of the things I love to do is take out my leader material and tie leaders for the year. I always use this video as a reference. It’s very relaxing. Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Oh that is *_Great_* !! Much, _much_ better than the improvised crud I used for the one & only time I used my rod. I look forward to using this next season, as we're currently frosted here this morning in Minnesota, and the weather radar is showing snow in the air. I'm up to 10 flies in my collection, 5 or 6 of which I learned to tie from you right here ! Another clear and informative video. Thanks !!

Really top notch video on the blood knot!! It is really important to do as in the video. I have waisted yards of monofilament practicising and failing on the last step, which is tightening up the knot with both tag ends: I was pulling both of them in the wrong direction (the yellow end to the left and the red one to the right), and this will undo the knot instead of tightening it. It may be obvious to most people, it wasnt' to me :-). Thanks and keep posting!

Another great video, thanks. I spent the better part of an afternoon this winter learning the blood knot so I could then tie my own leaders. One thing I learned is if you have too big a gap between thickness of the two lines (say 20LB test for one and 8 LB on the other) the knot won't work. Gary Borger suggests using more wraps on the thinner side to compensate, but I found it difficult. Still, I agree it's a beautiful, compact knot. However, on the river dealing with finicky tailwater fish and 6x or smaller tippet I revert back to a triple surgeons. Dave

this video is where i learned to tie blood knots, i was doing albright knots before, and love this knot a lot more. in the past year ive come to start nipping with about 1/16 inch of tag end, maybe a hair more, then lightly melting it with a lighter before mushing it down with a wet finger, it really makes the knot smoother. be careful not to burn the knot though!

Nice video. Fortunate to stumble on this one looking for a blood knot how-to. I like how the RH line comes back to the middle and passes up (not down) - this seems more natural to start (IMHO). Most of the step-by-step diagrams show the RH line coming back to the middle and down - both achieve the same knot. I'll just have to remember my leader line being the RH line (for some reason I always mentally think of my hook end on my left). Echo kudos on starting with rope and then working to real line.

Many thanks for this, I've almost got the blood knot so I can tie it streamside-still need practice and to come back to this video at the moment as I still get it wrong sometimes, when tying up rigs at home, I make a smooth blob over the knot with UV resin, this makes it go the through the guides even easier.

great demo and good job! this knot is still one of the most irritating to ever do and feels like you are trying to tighten it whilst holding 4 lines. I used this knot with heavier offshore gear and it did have a habit of slipping (not sure if it works better for the fly gear though) when connecting mono to braid. Would much prefer and recommend the double uni knot.

I found it easier teaching myself that you’re twisting the line counter clockwise on both sides. Then you don’t have to remember if you wrapped the 1st one towards you or away from you. Just think of it as clockwise and or counterclockwise. Depending on if you place the left over the right or left at the very beginning of the knot.

right?? i was all good up till i cut the tag ends at the end and went to see if it held and it fell apart..prior to cutting the tag ends tho it wasn't going anywhere lol. I ended up just using a Uni Knot instead which seems stronger i think BUT i still want to learn the blood knot
@patricksims4607
@patricksims4607 5 лет назад
@@jgoldian47 the blood knot in nearly every scenario is better and very strong, just have to make sure after you wrap the first tag that you tuck that line under your sencond tag line and that you pull it quick and hard enough if you dont then it'll just unwind
@jgoldian47
@jgoldian47 5 лет назад

@patricksims4607
@patricksims4607 5 лет назад
@@jgoldian47 there's another way of tying this knot too that's a little easier just hold both tag ends in your hands side by side completely horizontal and twist them together 10 or more times, then let the middle of that twist relax by pushing the twist in so u open up a gap, as centered as I can get it and then you just grab the left tag and take it and push it down the hole and then you take the 2and tag and pull it up through the hole works just as well as this way and it prob doesn't sound like it but it's easy

Mad River tutorial on RU-vid suggests maintaining a loop in the right hand that the first tag passes through. That is more difficult than simply passing the tag past the point where the two lines cross. The method in the above video results identically but requires fine threading of just the second tag. Great job with the instruction and video........ thank you. My "blood Knot" question: " When I use this knot to add a dropper to my leader, which tag end do I use to tye on the fly? I always use the larger piece of monofilament so the tippet and dropper tag don't tangle. Example: If I tye on a 6X tippet to my 5X section of my leader, do I use the 5X (larger diameter) tag and clip off the 6X remaining tag ? Or dosen'T it matter? Sometimes it seems the two flys tangle. ***** Note 5x = 0.006 6X= 0.005

love the video have probably watched it 20 times, really helped me iron out blood knots. Problem i'm seeing is after i tie a clean knot (step-by-step as per video) the tensile strength is only 2 lbs (3x tippet and 2x tapered leader)... shouldn't the knot strength be that of the tippet? (in my case 8.5 lbs)
