@Shadow Gamer theres greater reason to believe that the moon presence doesn't particularly care about killing the other great ones, since it doesn't interact with the player unless you kill Gherman. Silencing Mergo is your job as a hunter as detailed in the contract you made with the blood minister, but thats not something the moon presence asked you to do nor is it something it asked Gherman to do (which is why doing it doesn't set Gherman free).

@@justsomeguy6841 If I may pose a counter argument: There are plenty of reasons to believe that the Hunter's Dream is, in fact, supposed to be a stand-in for Tokoyo no Kuni, one of the Realms of Death in Shinto myth. First of all we've got Gehrman, a gangly old man wielding a scythe -- almost everyone all over the world associate this imagery with the Grim Reaper these days -- and the final confrontation with him is an almost perfect symbolic representation of Death of the Major Arcana Tarot. Secondly we've got the Dream's connection with the Moon, which is heavily associated with the realm of the departed in Japanese myth and folklore. The Mensis Brain even gives us the "Moon" Rune, a Rune that incentivises killing, in what appears to be a plead for us to kill her. Several characters comment upon our Hunter's scent; Imposter Iosefka identifies it as "Moonlit scents" and Annalise calls us a "Moon-scented hunter." Also, a Blood Moon is also known as a "Hunter's Moon." Considering Ludwig was bestowed the Holy Moonlight Blade, he might've received it from the Moon Presence but her attempts at offering him "Guidance" to find and kill Mergo were misunderstood and he only focused on slaying the Beasts rather than dealing with the scourge outbreak's source. (Btw, where have you gotten the idea that silencing Mergo was a part of the contract with the Blood Minister?) Thirdly we've got Blood Echoes, which are very likely something akin to souls in the BB 'verse, (an "echo" of the voices within yourself... this is also reflected in the Blood Echoes' Japanese name: The Dying Wishes of The Blood,) and we deliver these "souls" to The Hunter's Dream -- either to give them to the Messengers (which, going by concept art, are closely connected to the Moon Presence) or to have the Doll channel them into our strength. Alternatively, Blood Echoes may be connected to Old Blood, or may even be a reflection of Oedon's voice... heck, could be a bit of everything and human's "souls" are just the writhing of an eldritch god... Fourthly, I trust you're likely at least superficially familiar with Obon festivals in Japan? Y'know, where paper lanterns are sent out over a water surface? Well, the burning lanterns are symbolic of souls passing from our world into the afterlife and are also supposed to help lingering souls find their way to the final rest. As a result, lanterns have become regarded as a "link" between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. Suddenly the lanterns we use to access the Hunter's Dream and the headstones we use to get back to the Waking World makes a whole lot sense, don't they? As does The Doll, by way of her connection to the Winter Lantern enemies... (Incidentally, much like how the ocean separates the world of the living from Tokoyo no Kuni in Japanese thought, big bodies of water in Bloodborne also act as boundaries separating realms from each other: Cainhurst Castle is located in the middle of a lake and is separated from Yharnam, and it's inhabited by Blood Lickers, which are very similar in description to Pretas/Gaki of the Six Realms of Reincarnation. The lake surrounding the Fishing Hamlet separates it from the rest of the Hunter's Nightmare -- which is completely based on Naraka, the Hell of Japanese Buddhism, as described by Ryuunosuke Akutagawa in his short-story "The Spider's Thread" -- and the Fishing Hamlet's ocean itself is symbolic of the shores of Sanzu no Kawa, the river separating the realm of the living from the realm of the dead.) Finally we've got The Moon Presence, whose design differs from all other Great Ones in that, well, she looks like a corpse, with grotesquely exposed ribs and bony limbs. Two of her abilities are also thematically tied to death; an AOE attack that brings its victims to the brink of death, and a rain of blood that disables blood vials. She does send us out to kill Great Ones, or at least Mergo/The Wet Nurse specifically, but though they may be buried in their tombs, the Great Ones are not dead; the early Pthumerians are said to have been but humble guardians of "the slumbering Great Ones," for that is not dead which can eternal lie... Ultimately, all Blood Echoes we reap are taken to her anyway: The ones we give to the Messengers can summarily just be given to her, and the ones we channel into our strength are either reaped by Gehrman in the Sunrise ending (and probably given to the Moon Presence) or taken after the fight with Gehrman along with Gehrman's own Blood Echoes after we've reaped them in the Honoring Wishes ending... In the end, though, we kill even the Moon Presence. And with strange eons even death may die. For further clarity: The Nightmare of Mensis/Mergo's Loft is the Bloodborne counterpart to The Pure Realm, Paradise according to Buddhism: As I've already mentioned, the Fishing Hamlet is Bloodborne's counterpart to the Sanzu River, below it lies the Hunter's Nightmare/Hell and above the Fishing Hamlet lies the Nightmare Frontier, as evidenced by the sails of the Fishing Hamlet's ships that can be seen under the Nightmare Frontier area. This basically makes the Nightmare Frontier area the BB counterpart to Buddhism's Asura/Shura realm, which is often depicted as a collection of floating islands. (The Asura/Shura tend to be depicted as multi-armed anti-gods, and what boss do we fight in the Nightmare Frontier if not Amygdala.) However, from the area just outside the lantern cave in the Nightmare Frontier, you can also see, way up in the sky, Mergo's Loft. Which, in another shout-out to Ryuunosuke Akutagawa's "The Spider's Thread", is inhabited by Nightmare Apostles/Giant Spiders... The Wet Nurse is a bit of a twofer: On one hand she's basically an Angel, what with her being a winged attendant of Mergo/a God. On the other hand, she's also basically Thousand-armed Kannon. And considering that the Wet Nurse is a winged, robed woman with a formless(?) head and the statue on top of the Grand Cathedral's altar depicts a winged, robed, headless woman dripping a liquid (Old Blood?) from high above down upon the effigies below, she may have a hand in the Scourge of Beasts... which would make her a pretty obvious target for those who seek to put an end to the scourge... And the Moon Presence, with her appetite for Blood Echoes, probably wouldn't say "no" to the opportunity to get them closer to their source, either. (Not to mention Mergo, that stillborn child that refuses to properly die. A thanatosian deity gotta have some standards in regards to the world order to uphold through any lethal means necessary, no?) For reference, the Six Realms of Reincarnation: 1st realm, Naraka/Hell: Inhabited by sinners/Old Hunters and Oni, in Bloodborne represented by Nightmare Executioners and Laurence and Ludwig in the roles of Gozu the Ox-Head and Mezu the Horse-Face. (Ludwig also pulls double duty as a stand-in for Kandata, one of the primary characters in "The Spider's Thread.") 2nd realm, Preta/Gaki: The accursed spirit realm of hungry ghosts; the Preta/Gaki are commonly described as emaciated corpses with inflated bellies consumed by a horrifying hunger but way too small mouths to eat anything, leading them to consume disgusting filth like blood and shit... ergo, they're Blood Lickers... and where do you find the Blood Lickers? In the haunted Castle Cainhurst, which is mostly populated by ghosts; in the Hunter's Nightmare/Naraka, where accursed beings like the Gaki can often be found in Buddhist art, and in the Phumerian Labyriths (which happen to be Bloodborne's counterpart to Ne no Katsukuni, the Borderland of Roots separating the realm of the living from Yomi, the second realm of the dead in Shintoism). 3rd and 4th realm, Beasts and Humans: These two realms have some pretty big overlap in Buddhism because, well, they overlap irl as well. This one should be fairly obvious; the Waking World/Yharnam is being overrun with humans who are turning into beasts. 5th realm, Asura/Shura: The Nightmare Frontier, ruled by the multi-armed Amygdala. 6th realm Deva: The Higher Heavens, or the Nightmare of Mensis, the home of celestials (probably Kin) as well as the enlightened ("insight" is referred to by a word synonymous with "enlightenment" in Japanese). The Great Ones are more commonly tied to Buddhist deities and various Bodhisattva. E.g., Kos is Jizou.

@@GrahamChapman my friend, there's is a lot here and I applaud your depth of research in the subject, but in your fervor I'm afraid you might be adapting the story to fit your claim, rather than the other way around. First off, while symbolism is rampant in all souls games it could all just be inspiration and none of it points to the moon presence being specifically hostile towards its own kind. It can be ravenous and parasitic, while not really having any target in mind. As to the contract with the blood minister, the only terms we know for sure to exist is that we cannot die until we have successfully gotten to the source of the hunt and stopped it, and that we are tied to the hunters dream until we fulfill our end. Silencing Mergo being tonight's goal. I couldn't find anywhere where the red moon is referred to as the "hunters moon" and based on Miyazakis interview on the matter, I dont think that was the intention. While I dont disagree that the presence of the moon (see what I did there?) Is whats causing all the problems in Yharnam, there's no reason to believe that beasthood or the hunt itself would specifically lead to the deaths of Great Ones. You only have to kill two of them directly, and only because they were in the way of your ultimate goal. While many hunters were explicitly once tied to the dream, Ludwig simply wasn't one of them. Of all the item descriptions involving him, not once does it mention the workshop apart from design philosophy, nor does it mention him even having met Gherman. His "Guiding moonlight" could be any great one influencing him, and its influence seemed to lead to a completely different transformation than all the other beasts of Yharnam, further separating him from the moon presence. Plus, his hunt was concluded. So a different infant was used to call the red moon that time around than Mergo. Once again, I'm very impressed with your depth of knowledge on the subject of these inspirations. I won't deny the inspirations or ties to folklore as they're clearly present. However, the symbolism doesn't imply any intent on the part of the Moon Presence.

@@justsomeguy6841 Considering what the goddess of death is like in Shintoism, (she literally invented mortality in a moment of spite during a quarrel with her husband,) odds are that the Moon Presence is "hostile" towards all things... it's just that Mergo and/or The Wet Nurse are specifically her targets... (Rom is more like collateral; a well-meaning being who's unfortunately hindering our progress and, as such, has to go... There's some symbolism involved with her too though...) But none of those "terms" are connected specifically to the contract with the Blood Minister. The note that most closely relates to your claim within the game, "Halt the spreading scourge of beasts lest the night carry on forever", is found in The Hunter's Dream, and there isn't really any indications that the Blood Minister has any relation to that note, is there? Ah, I'm sorry, I was a bit unclear on the matter of the Red Moon: I did not mean that it is referred to as a "Hunter's Moon" within the confines of the game, it's IRL that a Lunar Eclipse/Blood Moon/whatever is referred to as a "Hunter's Moon." Try googling the question "what is a hunter's moon" and see for yourself. Maybe, maybe not... A different possibility could be that many Great Ones were vying over Ludwig and trying to make him their champion and that the Moon Presence were one of them... As for Ludwig's transformation: He was a Hunter of the Church, you know. He was the Healing Church's _first_ Hunter, even. And "as it was, clerics transformed into the most hideous beasts." Laurence, The Cleric Beast, Vicar Amelia, Ludwig... There are many varying forms of Beasts in Bloodborne, so calling Ludwig's transformation in particular "different" may be stretching it... Also, we do not know if Ludwig's Hunt, or indeed any Hunt before ours, concluded with an infant Great One being slain. (Considering that Mergo has been around since the time of the Pthumerians, she has likely always been the source of the scourge... Well, her and Ebietas, I suppose; the latter does seem to be the Healing Church's primary Old Blood donor...) Maybe not, but thematically it makes sense for her, as the Great One of Death or whatever, to pursue the agenda of claiming as many "souls"/Blood Echoes as she can, ensuring that the stillborn Mergo becomes more "still" than "born", taking out The Wet Nurse as she poses as a rival of sorts to the MP (Shintoism vs Buddhism, Izanami vs Kannon, Nameless Moon Presence vs Formless Oedon), and setting us, Death's Little Helper, loose upon the world. Now, I'm obviously not saying that Bloodborne is ONLY what I put down in the above comment, doing so would be doing the game a disservice as it's so much more than so: Shinto, Buddhist, Christian, occult, gothic, cosmic horror and tarot concepts and imagery, all of it seamlessly integrated into a masterpiece... But Bloodborne most definitely takes more inspiration from Shinto and Buddhist cosmology and lore than it's given credit for. The Hunter's Nightmare is, for example, most definitely some kinda Hellish afterlife, as evidenced by the fact that you can find both Laurence in his Cleric Beast form as well as Laurence's human skull there. This despite the fact that Laurence's Beast skull is the goshintai enshrined on the altar of Yharnam's Grand Cathedral AND the fact that the Bloodletting Beast is highly likely _also_ Laurence, or at least his vermin-infested reanimated body. (The flow of time appears to be kinda wonky down in the Pthumerian labyrinths.) I've got my take on what the Moon Presence is, why she's doing what she's doing, and what her bigger role is in the setting, but if you've got your own take on her then that interpretation is yours. Anyway, yeah, you're welcome for the Insight I could provide with my knowledge of Japanese culture and religion and stuff. Hope it has given you some new perspectives and deeper appreciation on some stuff in Bloodborne. ^^

They kept calling it an AOE attack when you can clearly see a white beam shooting out of his face. It only affects its current target and i think surviving with 1hp is a player only feature, so he just straight up kills them

@@professionalsimpdestroyer4135 no, because the blood never hits me when I fight against it and still does the "Sin's Harvest". It does like to summon the blood bubbles right before lowering you to 1hp, in hopes that the blood finishes you off if you try to recover health by hitting it

I think that’s the best way to describe her. She wasn’t the hardest or most action packed boss, but with the way she looks and moves, Mergo’s crying, the mist, and of course that iconic lullaby, her fight is so atmospheric it really feels straight out of a horror story.

People say her jewelry is similar to a child's carousel over their crib.

In hindsight, I suppose the logic "it's called BLOODborne, so Imma go with BLOODtinge for my virgin journey" had its flaws back then when I had no idea if Bloodtinge was even viable or not. And going up against Martyr Logarius on NG+ was just plain not fun... Like, I expect _a lot_ of people to have a story about that time Logarius first kicked their asses, be it on NG or NG+, but I also expect most people's stories of that time to include them going ham on him with weapons _somewhat_ attuned to their build... and then there was the Bloody Crow... you _do not_ want your first i-totally-lost-count attempts going up against him to be with a BT-build without any BT weapons... the eventual realization that he's beating you up with an optimized BT-build just adds to the bitterness... as does the disappointment when you don't even get his awesome blood katana after you *finally* win...

After the huge struggle that was Maria (she was the hardest for some reason, aka I suck at parries) the last 3 bosses were much more doable, Orphan was still tense and scary af though

@@FilhodoDia I was just pointing out how they all did not notice how Moon Presence eliminated every single one of them with the one-shot until rom died. But yeah, hes the most aggressive one that's attack sets don't really change even if they are targeting someone big or small. Kos is less aggressive and so are the others.

it would be interesting if the reason is that mechanically, Gehrman phase 3 starts only after he gazes at the Moon in Hunter’s Dream and buffs himself up with blue aura, and there is no Moon (in the code) in Kos’ area. It would be pretty fitting lore-wise as well, the power given to Gehrman in phase 3 may well be from Moon Presence in Hunter’s Dream.
