The fact that he has a slight smile on his face, shows how proud Tanaka was of Frank. Loss after loss, and the realization that his training will never be imparted to his future generations, made him despondent. And then Frank decides to honor him and trains extensively and passes all the tests, surprised him to such a degree, that he couldn't help but be impressed and proud.

Looking back, Tanaka needed this to help get him through the death of his son. Frank took on this burden to learn at the masters feet to give his mentor hope that the teaching will go on in spite of the loss of his son. And what better candidate to do that than someone who was already like family? In essence, Tanaka could see how deeply Frank cared about the art and his family. How much of a difference they had made in his own life. The philosophy that he taught him in youth was applied and the logic was sound. It was Frank's way of conveying gratitude for allowing him to be a part of his family. To raise him up from tragedy as Tanaka had done for him from delinquency. Brilliant writing and performance.

However, in reality, Frank Dux, as portrayed here by Van Damme never did meet Tanaka, and he was never was in any Kumate. He never received any sword awarded to him and he traded in the sword to sea traveling pirates in exchange for the lives of young boys who were going to become slaves. Believe me, Bloodsport is a kickass movie. But this movie is completely bogus telling us about Frank Dux and the Kumate as well as being trained Senzo Tanaka, not even meeting him for even ten seconds.

I absolutely love that moment at 3:53 where Senzo gives his wife that knowing look and smile. In all his training scenes with Frank he stays stoic and stern faced, but the candidness he shows with his wife while Frank is blindfolded does a perfect job of illustrating how proud he is in that moment. Then in the final scene of this training montage, when he presents Frank with the katana, you can see the tiniest little hint of a smile across Senzo's face. Roy Chiao's performance as Tanaka was incredible.

There is a sublime meaning that in front of his student who’s blindfolded he only wants to demonstrate his pleasure to his wife. Only in his wife will he demonstrate this act. A true measure of a man. He will not show pleasure to his student because he wants the student to understand success is long term. It’s continuing in its process and development. Miyagi did the same a small nod or smile, it demonstrates to his student it’s not enough everything is in stages. My Father was like that extreme discipline, courage and strength.

It's SUPER sad that the "real" Frank Dux was a complete and utter phony, but it doesn't change the fact that JVCD, Roy C., Lettich (Director), and the entire cast and crew were outstanding. The music was wonderful, the editing helped showcase JCVD while not taxing Roy, and there was obvious care put into the screenplay. My favorite JCVD film is still "Lionheart", though. :) All about making a little girl and her mother happy and healed. I *LOVED* THAT. And the entire cast and crew was---once again--brilliant. well , he is just one of the action stars thats get thumbs down from many people seen his movies , chuck norris and sly stallone are 2 other guys and even dolph lundgren ends up in , rotten tomates as bad actors and their movies they done , even tho sly has done rambo and rocky , the expandables and dolph was rockys enemy , and chuck norris delta force serie and his prime movie the octagon , and his good guys wear black , and hero and the terror , and JCVDs , hard target , maximum risk , double impact , just name a few from each one of these guys list of movies , downgraded by many folks .

So much respect for the Japanese. From them comes the Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judô, Karate, Sambo and so many others that proved to be so effective. But not only this... it's their philosophy, culture and all the rest that are so different. Yeah, just like any others, there are the mistakes, but overall, such an admirable people. One day, I wish to visit Japan and Kano Jigoro's Dojo. As a child, one of my dreams was to date and marry a Japanese girl, lol. Hugs from Brazil.

I can see where you are coming from. I can tell you're a true martial artist because a true one never puts down any form of self defense. He also understands the link between martial arts and how it actually corresponds to the yin and yang - having peace and balance. I myself love and practice Tai Chi Quan, study the Tao Te Ching, and respect all forms of martial arts. There is no one single form that is meant for everyone. The only martial art that is vague in balance and harmony that I have a hard time seeing a merge would be the art of Sumo wrestling. But if the men choose to follow it, who am I to argue.

Avec le recul j'y vois toujours un grand film très divertissant mais avec forcément la magie en moins. Par la suite, ce film à donné naissance à un genre à part entière, celui des films de baston à 1€ direct to DVD 😂. This 7 min training scene could have been a whole movie. There's just so much jam-packed into this one scene from the intro and background of Master Shidoshi, the mysterious passing of Shinji (I wonder what happened) and Frank Dux having to prove himself worthy of his master's training. Then, the actual training itself, the levels of improvement of student becoming the master, the coffee scene, and of course the culmination of all that training with the ball-stretcher torture ritual/method. And finally the ceremony at the end. Frank is now ready to honor his Shidoshi, Shinji, the family name, and win the ancient bloodsport contest. I love this movie.

Notice how the Master never smiles when he attains mastery but you can see he’s proud. That kind of reserved and stoic demeanour of keeping one’s own emotions deep inside and never letting them come to the surface is a very powerful trait and has fascinated me for much of my life and I am learning that control. It escapes me how the Japanese, Finns, Scandinavians, Estonians, Latvians and several more nations are so adept at it.
