I loved the older car in the Markums’ Garage! The man fixing the ATV resembles the men in the pictures. They all have dark thick hair.

There are so many stories comes out of the Appalchain Mountains that would be lost if not for channels like this. I fear that many more have already been lost to the ages over time. 😢

I cannot believe that this family had so many tragic stories. The cemetery looks well kept. Is this cemetery on private land, or county? Thank you very much Leo and Heather, this was a very interesting video. Have a great day. 😊

Y'all have some really scary looking tunnels in W.Virginia! The family that gave you directions had what looks like a nice '55 Chevy. I wonder if the deceased that you visit talk about you, after you leave, with each other? Not many visitors,I would imagine,to that remote cemetery.

I admire the men that carved these tunnels out all over the U.S. I say men because it was only men that did that job back then. Not until the 40’s did women become Rosie the Riveter. 😁 Wow a man that asks for directions. I’ve never met one. Thanks for this video. Super interesting Leo.

Hey Heather!! If you go to Ashland, KY check out the grave of Doc Lefler. He was a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1920. He was my great grandfather

Hi guys. I just discovered your channel a few days ago and have been pretty much binging on your videos. (lol) I am 70 years old, retired, and living in Cleveland, OH. I am originally from a small town called Richlands, VA and I love watching videos of this part of the country and stumbled upon your channel during some of my searches. Heather, you mentioned in this video that you wondered what happened to Wade Marcum (Jr.) who died in 1935 from a gunshot wound. Well, most of my working career was doing research. I'm pretty dang good at it, so I thought I would do a little digging on Wade. I don't know if you have had time to delve into the incident, but I actually found a newspaper article on the incident. How do I get that to you? He was actually a Mingo County deputy sheriff at that time. Keep up the great work guys! God Bless!

Interesting story, one can only speculate why Gideon Marcum decided to shoot Detective Vanhoose as his arrest appeared to be uneventful. Quite a large family, continuing even today! The opening of your video was quite impressive! Thank you Leo and Heather, I look forward to your story about John L. Marcum.

When we see a grave stone, it always seems so innocent and respectful almost... however each stone has a story to tell. History at its best.

Wade Marcum whose death certificate appears at 23.50 was a well-liked deputy sheriff (son of Monterville Marcum) who married my grandfather Joe's little sister Myrtie. Deputy Marcum had pulled over a car on one of the area's many single-lane bridges and a trigger-happy moonshiner named Albert Dillon jumped out and shot Wade, but not before receiving a few non-fatal wounds himself. Wade lingered 2 days before succumbing. SIDE NOTE: Gid Marcum (the subject of this wonderful video) had enlisted a cousin named John B. Marcum into his train robber gang. John took over as leader of the gang at age 17 following Gid's shooting death. Nine years later, on Election Day in 1920, John B. Marcum shot my great grandfather (non-fatally) at the Breeden train depot. Seeking revenge for their father's wounding, late one night a week later, my grandfather Joe and his older brother Emery caught up with John Marcum at the Breeden water tower and shotgunned him to death. In case it's not obvious, Mingo County West Virginia was far more violent than the wild west :)

My grandfather was born in Williamson West Virginia, and have heard a lot of stories about the family. He is buried in Canada Kentucky. His sir name was Bunn. Breedlove, Schwartz, are other names associated with the family. Was told we were related to both Hatfield and McCoy’s. Would love to know if you have come across any family members?

He has to be connected by whoever made his find a grave, there's several kids missing actually, not uncommon , its made by people like me and you, so it has holes often, even my own family doesn't show all its connected family on find a grave, Whoever made the parents find a grave didn't do it completely

Leo, old times in West Virginia sure had a gun settling disagreements , I can’t imagine how many were settled temporarily at least by just the show or threat of a gun.

These families up in the mountains , they stuck together, lie for each other, protect each other as best as they could, because living up there in those mountains you needed each other. Looking at census records you can tell when the parents of children died , the aunts and uncles or neighbors took the surviving children in if there were any, so i can understand how the mountain people felt about their guidances . And their lives .
