Threshold has been an ability word since Time Spiral so it doesn't have any mechanical relevance, you just do the thing the card says after the dash as written. You chose correctly.
@@Nefyoni Threshold started out as a keyword. Keywords have defined mechanical functions. When they were reworking rules in Time Spiral it became an ability word. Ability words are reminder text that group abilities with common mechanics together, but have no mechanical functions themselves. So, I reiterate: "Threshold has been an *ability word* since *Time Spiral* so it doesn't have any mechanical relevance"
Are all ability words the same then? For example if they write something different after "Celebration" other than as long as 2 or more nonland permanents entered the battlefield under your control this turn do you still have to follow it even if we all know what Celebration means?
@NickTemperistic correct all ability words are this way. It thematically groups cards with a common functionality. So you can look up a single word instead of the phrase for cards with a similar mechanic. Also, they can make ETBs, attack triggers, or any other trigger that all care about that same thing.
Yeah, I couldn't believe they didn't smash the synth. I guess they wanted to contain the Muzzio trigger, but while 8 looks are probably bad the synth on the field is quick death...
CGB chose it probably because he could kill the entire table with burn and didn't care much for the creatures on board because he had a cyclonic rift. However, he used it maybe too soon. The rabbit commander wasn't lethal. Had he held on to it, he could've used it against the Cyberman Squadron at least.
14:50 Honestly, I had the same issue with the way they used Corrupted on a card in All Will Be One. For every other card it's "If opponent is corrupted, do the thing." for this one card it was "Do the thing, unless an opponent is corrupted". Ravenous Necrotitan. "Corrupted - When Ravenous Nacrotitan enters the battlefield, sacrifice a creature unless an opponent has three or more poison counters". It's literally the only card I know of that you ignore the corrupted instructions if the opponent is corrupted instead of the other way around.
Would love to see Wick get a second chance in a future game, probably my favorite commander from bloomburrow. I just love the idea of rats worshiping a giant snail lol
This was a banger episode. Spoilers* Great back and forth interaction at the end there. Really enjoyable episode. Also happy to see the channel going back to each player identifying their “Card of the Game” pick.
I'M SO EXCITED! As soon as I saw Wick I knew I had to build him. In the process of making it now. So happy to see CGB play this. Giving me so many ideas.
@@jonahhunt4213 yup. the only actual out was not block, teferi's pro and clap back with a OTK but I'm pretty sure teferi's was the ONLY out in the entire deck after aura shards was gone.
Normalize the "Rhystic Study doesn't have to go in every deck with blue, especially if your commander is a draw engine" conversation with your friends.
There is no reason not to put rhystic study in anything: it immediately replaces itself once it's your turn again (because at least one person won't pay) and from there rhystic study is free value. There is no reason not to put it in. Saying otherwise is like saying "no need to have a sol ring".
@@XpVersusVista I said "every deck", not "anything," which is an important distinction. So here's my rebuttal to the claim "there is no reason not to put Rhystic Study in anything" Reason 1 - Redundancy vs. Synergy: The commander already draws cards with its secondary ability, for the same amount of mana. Granted, Rhystic Study is a one time payment of that mana, but it is also not guaranteed to draw (but it is guaranteed to make the table a little more annoying than before). Rhystic Study in this deck is just redundancy with the commander, where I'd rather see synergy (something that works its ability). Which leads to the second reason... Reason 2 - Staples can contribute to stale (and sometimes subpar) deckbuilding: You mentioned the example "no need to have a sol ring." I would say the same statement "sol ring doesn't have to go in every deck" because sometimes it just doesn't fit the mana fixing. For example, I have Yidris that requires four specific mana values to cast, and the rest of the deck is low cost--so having sol ring is usually a -1 impactful card in the deck. But that's beside the point; to tie back to reason 1: In a weekly commander show that showcases commanders of a new set, I would argue that it's better entertainment to see the synergies and interactions of the commander. Including too many "staple" cards can take away from that, and instead it could lean more towards a good Grixis list with a few rats. Reason 3 - Probably the most important reason of all: Rhystic study can't block a 19/19; a nontoken rat can. But this isn't speaking purely objectively, I'm just making the case for my preferences. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
First, gg and love to cgb and friends❤. But i have one thing to say: this is not the first time Gina gets a bit salty on the show, and i get that no one wants to lose, but this is magic, and you must respect the opponents as much as you want to be respected back. Shae was playing magic very safe and smart, as all players should, just because Gina knew she would loose the next turn, doesn't justify the yells and picking opponent cards up and throw them. Lets all learn to be calm and respecteful to opponents, and if you know you are going to loose, tell them in a gentle way.
Gina seems always too salty especially to Shea... I really really love the Show but everytime Gina is in there is too much spitefullness and Emotion in it...
Shoreline Looter... “Threshold” used to be a keyword ability. It is now an ability word and has no rules meaning. - June 7, 2024 - MH3. So CGB played it correctly. You draw and discard until you get 7 or more, then you stop discarding...
Simulacrum Synth putting in Work! Muzzio is an underrated artifact commander, most go with esper urza with this style, really cool to see it pop off though. Feel bad for Wick though, wanted to see how it would operate, hard to deal with that early pressure though.
Gina had it. Sadly she didn’t know what her God could have gotten flipped back to the top side. Attack with three creatures during battle phase and on main phase 2; she could have made more tokens to block. She would have out summon Shae each round and won.
Regarding that threshold card: just so you know, threshold is just a flavour word here. It has no rules meaning. Most threshold abilities are worded in a way that completely turns them off when you don't have threshold, but this one isn't. It works as written: ignore the flavour word. (The same applies to other similar words, like landfall. Words in italics have no rules meaning.)
With the amount of cards gina was drawing i was just waiting for the vandalblast or teferis protection to come in at the end there. Baylen looks fun - i already have a token deck and a different naya deck but im tempted to pull baylen together. That was a tough one to close out but GG Shea!
Threshold is an ability word that gives a card different or additional characteristics if its controller has seven or more cards in their graveyard. So I think you can draw and discard, but no longer discard when you got 7 cards in the graveyard.
Gina too salty for my liking… why rush Shae so much when she only takes like 1 minute a turn anyways? Cgb and ben died like 20 minutes before but i dont see them complaining
That synthesizer is crazy strong. Was hoping to pull a copy from the Thunder Junction packs I picked up but unfortunately I'll have to pick it up as a single.
49:00 Gina forgot to use the convoke on March of the multitudes and missed out on making plenty more tokens 😢(not that it mattered, but it would have been an obvious thing to do when casting march)
Damn, now that's an explosive start. Shea never not had it. Gina put up a good fight though and there was a chance, if the Aura Shards had managed to go off, that it might have changed things plus how far she was able to dig into her deck.
I do think not taking out the Synthesizer with the Witch Enchanter was a failed threat assessment but that wasn't on Gina. I get wanting Emperion gone, it's nasty and for CGB especially it shuts down his deck, but it's also a 'can deal with it later' threat compared to the constant creation of karnstructs.
@@therealax6 yup, didn't have either and no way to get back aura shards from grave plus no board wipe or anything. fatal flaw of the deck that goes all in on one gameplan unfortunately.
Just Shea playing with her food hahaha. Although I do get the uncertainty when you are in a winning position like this. One spell could just derail that final blow
Anything in italics is not a part of the oracle text of the card. As such, the word _Threshold_ acts as a shorthand signifier of something the following text will care about, but it has no bearing on that ability. There are definitely some potent metaphysical aspects to the game 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Me and my friends always say 1hp is not Zero. (So we keep trying untill we’re outplayed and are overrun). But i doo get the situation ._. Sometimes it’s too frustrating to look at all of these creatures ^^.
Any legend that cares about drawing cards, esp in blue, is earmarked for cgb to want to play with it in the future, building a deck around it. Lol and I agree with him 😂😂 who doesn't love drawing?
There is a reason cards are expensive cause they win you games. Shea is the new CGB with her blue color win. Shea should play blue 💙 😍 🙌 😌 😎 😩 💙 more. The color won her a match.
14:40 it's not that complicated dude you literally just do exactly what it says on the card. Don't worry about how threshold abilities "usually" work, they do a different thing each time anyway, just read it and do what the card says.
Shoreline rooter has a design error. Youl draw and discard. Threshold: you don't discard. But they put all the keywords onto the threshold paragraph and it makes no sense .....
It sounds to me like they put this check into the ability because they really wanted you to have seven cards in the bin when it resolved and not less due to effects like Forage going on the stack and reducing your graveyard after you met the initial Threshold requirement to get the ability to trigger in the first place. Am I reading that right?
The way they "ability words" work, is that they have no special rules attached and are to be viewed as flavour text. So threshold just means "this ability wants you to have 7 or more cards in your graveyard". But honestly, i would prefer it if they worded it the way you did. Way more intuitive.
