Awesome vid. I’m so jealous of you Phals. I need more fragrant/summer blooming Phals. And it’s awesome that you’re doing Aroids now. You’ve given me a new appreciation for them. I’m going to have to keep an eye out for them and get myself one.

If you've mastered some of the wetter-growing orchids, ones that don't like dry roots, like phrags (and technically summer blooming phals), then I think aroids are an easy step. We'll see though...everyone harps on humidity for these guys...and I have no intention of turning my condo into a humid jungle. That said, I've see people growing aroids in all sorts of climates...so I'm going to push the buck like I did with the Macodes petola :D In short - GET ONE!

Here...but Not I’m a bit of a heavy watered so I think I could do well. Masdees do surprisingly well. My substitution for humidity has been to just shower them often. Seems to them really well.

Yessss - they're great. I love that they grow faster than orchids too lol. I forgot that orchids are "slow" compared to other plants and it's pretty nice having other plants in the home that really make profound changes year over year. Which aroids do you have?

Lol, figures that my favourite aroid is the one you couldn't pronounce (Clarinervium)! :P Also, I'd be surprised if the orchid seeds aren't viable? Once the pods pop open in nature, doesn't the wind automatically carry the seeds off to then end up in the soil or at least hopefully in contact with the fungus that helps them germinate? I don't really know MUCH about orchid propagation, esp from seed. Also I still totally love that orchid even with the weird lip issue going on.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
JC Oh man...scientific names always get me. Especially the first time...normally I recognize them in my head but I don’t say it haha. I retook that shot like 3 times and then just gave up. The thing about seed viability is, sometimes there is no actual embryo produced. And what happens is, you get a bunch of seed shells essentially. It’s happened to me before and if you look at the seeds under a microscope, you can normally tell. But we’ll see...I checked the flasks tonight and the seeds look like they’re swelling...I think. So 🤞🏻
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
And yeah, the triple lip looks near...but I think it’s also why I can’t get it to hold a seedpod. Messed up genetics 🧬- which is kind of sad...because I feel like it could make really crazy offspring

Thank you , very engaging and interesting as always. The only species I have is the phal memoria retig, used to keep her in full sun, as thought that was what you should do, found she does better backed away and a little more humid than the other phals, as I would get two spikes, and bud drop, finally flowers, so next year hope to progress this orchid, leaves are light green, moreso than other I have. Yeah, mine did NOT like too much light either (had them at a south window also). I ended up putting it under LEDs and it's done...better? They key to getting these to bloom is keeping their daylight hours from 12-14 hours. There was a study done on pulcherrima and all plants kept at 14hours of light bloomed; no plants bloomed at 9h. Mine have lots of flowers, but the root growth isn't as good as i'd like to see, and it seems to be one of the few phals that REALLY doesn't like sphagnum moss. I also have that problem with bud blast in the spring - I think it might be more related to low temperatures rather than humidity? The buds in early spring often blast for me, but the ones that form later into May/June tend to do much better. Keep us posted though - if you get less bud drop with higher humidity, then I'll have to try and figure out a way to alter that at my place. For now...the plants get our dry prairie air :P

Not sure! You'll probably need to do some experimentation of your own to figure that out. I'd be surprised if there was literature on such an obscure species (because there barely is anything on breeding more common orchids). Probably follow these same steps I did above for this - you can find the grueling details-including media recipe, process, how/why-in this post: herebutnot.com/how-to-breed-flask-phalaenopsis-orchids-steps-for-dry-seeds-green-pod-propagation-methods/ Good luck!

Do it! Once you get the setup, it’s a pretty easy process. And honestly...much less work than a regular potted orchid. Haha. Close, the cat’s name is Clyde-he’s a Blue British Shorthair. Great personality, very chill, and *thankfully* doesn’t chew the plants

Hi could you use homemade fertilizers and see which one works and which one doesn't that might be much interesting to discuss. I know that commercial fertilizers will work much better. But still, homemade fertilizers give benefits to plants at some degrees.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
Do you mean adding things like coffee grounds, banana peels and tea bags?
@gepliprl8558
@gepliprl8558 5 лет назад
@@HerebutNot Yes but with some moderations, of course.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
@@gepliprl8558 - So far I haven't seen a case where a person using home made fertilizers has had better results than myself. My goal is to push the upper limit of what my plants can do and I just haven't seen a compelling reason to try homemade alternatives. I do use a bit of rock dust, but that's more for rounding out the minerals and nutrients that standard fertilizers might not offer. I largely think that using compost (banana peels, coffee grounds, etc) directly on orchids exposes them to pathogens because you're encouraging mold and fungal growth in the media (and it potentially also introduces too many variables to try and troubleshoot).
@gepliprl8558
@gepliprl8558 5 лет назад
@@HerebutNot I personally think that homemade fertilizers causing some fungal growth is kinda myth. Unless we just throw banana peels and coffee ground directly into the medium because the reasonable application for orchids would be strong dilluted liquid. I also do it to my Afric. violets some acidic vegetables.However agree with the troubleshooting parts. I just said it coz I think you sort of having some wild orchids to try out which are not part of your fav. collection.
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
@@gepliprl8558 Yeah, but african violets and vegetables are terrestrial plants. They have adapted to growing in earth where decay is constantly happening. Epiphytic ochids have root tissue that is very easily infected.

Good! I had to stick it into perlite/bag because it lost that last leaf. Recuperated and grew back leaves & gained some roots, and now it’s growing back in my regular humidity. How long did it take for these to bloom from the time you flasked the seeds?
@HerebutNot
@HerebutNot 5 лет назад
amathg I purchased these flasks before I started breeding my own plants. Doing the math on how my current flasks are doing and how long it took these to bloom after deflasking, all said and done, you’re looking at about 3 years from seed to flower. In flask for 1 year, out of flask for 2. That said, other species (like paphs) have been known to take 10-15 years to go from seed to flower

Yessir! I'm going to tack it on to the end of my next video. They are alive; big protocorms at the moment...but I am losing more than I have ever before. I suspect that's due to selfing and poor vitality with the imbreeding? I'm hoping to do a video this week

@@HerebutNot what do you mean by "selfing and poor vitality with the imbreeding"? sorry for my poor english ☺️
@HerebutNot

Michael Duadi - the seeds came from a self pollination. Generally you want two unrelated plants, or at least two sibling plants. Self pollination may reduce viability...I’m not too sure. But given how many protocorms have died, that’s my guess

@@HerebutNot yesterday i asked this question to one guy that i met. he breed orchids for quiet some time and he told me that it can be done pefectly fine without issues. he is not a scientist or somthing but he have some experience. if you think on that, in nature it is very likely that insects will pollinate the same plant when they move from flower to flower so i assume it's ok to do so. or not? 😅

Michael Duadi - well, I don’t know...I posted the update video last night. You can see that compared to past flasks, more of the Phal pallens have aborted. I adjusted the media slightly...but no more than is recommended. 🤷🏼‍♂️ To me it looks like the selfing of that plant has made less resilient plants. Hard to say though - lots of variables
