Can you advise me on what growing media ?agar gel you are using to put the seeds, whether you are using a heating mat and if air needs to be introduced from time to time? Thanks
@@rubytaylor4075 - it depends on the type in most cases. I have lots that hang (especially as they get bigger), but some species naturally grow upright while others grow sideways and more pendant. Determining if there’s too much light is more about looking at leaf colour - too bright will show signs of yellowing or reddening, too hot will lead to a physical burn
Ohhhhhhj yessss sorry I was wondering after I asked that question if you were already a member then I thought you probably are LOL yes I was at the Motes one that is the only one I've ever been to.... I was the lady that had the insydium that I didn't know the name of and I do have 27 big vandas at homemade so I did not buy any of the little ones from Motes
wow, so many beautiful little ones. Do you know where to find those orchid seedlings in edmonton please? I've been looking for it for a while. Any info would be appreciated.
Oh man, I’m gonna buy that crawling phrag and grow it in this long, thin, rectangular, vintage Italian terracotta planter (I think it’s for a window box) and just let it crawl across the entire pot! 😊
as a veterinary healthcare worker with experience in surgery... this is so overboard.... like lab animal innoculation style overboard.... which is kinda perfect for athome hobbiest work (from the contamination to aseptic technique compensations... it seems just a stronger amount of contactlessness is required :) ) 🥺 I have experience in aseptic technique and innoculation and such, so when it comes to some of the materials i'm probably going to change a few things (ex: syringe with caps, test tubes for higher isolation rather than jars, box hood rather than glove box because with high enough aseptic technique, that's all that in theory shouuuuld be necissary (again, in theory), covid style surgical mask, maybe nitrile gloves instead of the glove box.... but beyond that... i'm so heavily impressed with the aseptic technique he shows and this video gives me such a strong direction in how to start growing orchids from seed!!! Like seriously, the way he uses hydrogen peroxide is just... brilliant!!! I've got to bring that up with my old professors to see what they think. :D Thank you!!! <3
Jewels root very well in water. Or at least from what I've heard reputable people say. And I can say specifically one of mine did in just a few weeks, had about 3 half inch roots. And had none before. Just a cutting.
Sorry I'm commenting so much. But just had to say.. Repotting phals every year is honestly not what should be advised but I guess it has to be until you know the media and such. With exceptions to there being problems or dead roots. But 3 years... That's my goal now.
I agree with ya on the bark types but I did want to make a statement I have noticed largely with orchiata brand specifically. Maybe it will be of use to you. Take it or leave it. I've noticed orchiata may not retain much water in the first couple or few months, but neither does the fur bark either actually..but once the fur bark and pine bark of any kind gets more use to water, it does absorb normally after like a month or a handful of good waterings but then.. with orchiata, once it starts taking the water correctly, I find that it begins to start holding a lot more water than fir bark in the initial first 6 months of me using it. And I believe that is what it is treated to do. Is hold on to the water more than pine bark does generally. So something too consider. In general pine bark is less water retentive than fir bark for certain! However... Orchiata holds onto a lot more water than any fir bark I've ever used, unless the fir bark is pretty old, like 6 months to a year Of course the brand and quality is important and relevant in this and subject to change. But yeah.. Just beware orchiata holds onto water a lot more for me. P.S. perlite is volcanic glass (aka obsidian) heated to a very high temp until it kind of explodes into lightweight popped ball thingies... Very professional explanation I know. I'm smart o_-
OMG your Phal mariae O_O!! I'm drooling. I want that orchid so much Just my found a native jewel type orchid native to my state in an area about to be turned into a play ground... Literally a bunch of them in a mound of dirt ready to die and I'm hoping to save them and keep them alive. Will be my first... I saw these plants and was like "omg so pretty, looks like a jewel orchid!". Had no idea for sure if it wasan orchid but it's so similar in growth habit. And come to find out it's a native orchid! So exciting. I know you shouldn't collect those but literally these were just a chance occurance I saved from a pile hoping to put in my moss garden... So excited about this. Thanks as always for your great advice and your in depth logical approach. Really important to do proper research on the actual health and living culture of the plants you have and where they come from. You do the best job at this and it's very appreciated. Probably said it before. But cool as shit Haha -L
I would like to verify something. After placing the seeds into the mixture, do I place the dry seeds in mixture in light or keep it dark for the 3-6 months? This is my first try and I am hoping for success vs failure for my first time growing orchids. Thanks. Thank You for these videos!
@@Lydia-KimbaTiger222 - with phals you don’t need a dark treatment. For some species it’s recommended to increase germination rates. Paphs for example generally respond well to dark treatment. If in doubt, do the dark treatment. If you have multiple flasks, test and see which results in better outcomes. In some cases I don’t get much of anything with dark treatment, but upon moving to light, the protocorms start growing well, so I don’t think there are cases where dark treatment are problematic other than possibly slowing the initial 3-6 months of growth.
Except orchids grow tilted down in nature so water drips out of crown and hotter weather than house so less risk of crown rot...I just dab water in crown with paper towel....but even if you have dry air it's maybe not a problem for you in the USA but remember some of us live in Canada it's too cold less hours of sun in winter for orchids to dry crown ...in fact I do same 10 min soak also but every 10 days because every 7 days is guaranteed root rot...so maybe don't suggest everyone can get crown wet...it's dependent on it drying fast enough sun hours heat etc and in nature they tilt down.
I just started with tropical and sun tropical plants all my with my 55 Orchids. I've got a couple of dozen. Learning all over again. So much has changed in the past 50 years. Well said thanks.
I bought orchid wood for my tortoises. They began to sprout but bastard tortoises no matter how I much I feed them are eating them like maniacs. I now try to protect them via a transparent tube, but lets see. Maniac tortoises trying their best to knock it down. 🤬
I have been thoroughly enjoying your series on orchid sowing! Your detailed explanations and practical tips are incredibly helpful. I have a question regarding the pressure cooker you use for sterilizing. You mentioned that it must be 15 PSI. In the UK, I've only found a pressure cooker that can pressurize up to 100 kPa/14.5 PSI. Would this be sufficient, or does it specifically need to be 15 PSI/121 Celsius? Thank you for your guidance and for sharing your knowledge with us!
So, if you had the 4 gooseneck how would you focus the lights and how far away would you have them for carnivorous plants, like flytraps, sundews, or pitchers?
So helpful! Are jewel orchids ok to be potted in orchid pots (the ones with the holes all around)? Would you use the same potting mixture with leca on the bottom as well?
thank you RU-vid for recommend this video to me, I love how informative it is ✨ its been a 5years old video, but still u doin a great job man 👍 hope u doin well nowadays
Hullo there! I was wondering, did you make the glove box yourself? Like attaching the gloves to it etc. if so, could you explain how you did it and what you used? I would like to make one and hopefully be able to do this lol
Thanks to your video related to advanced phalaenopsis care, it made me discover more orchids outside of what I knew before! Also, picked up new interest to collect summer blooming orchids & obtained the hybrid seedlings that who knows what the flower will look like 😂 and purchased a vanda for experimentation to culture in appartement
Omg!!!!.....where in Canada you from. I came across your channel and I'm learning alot. I just rescued 3 orchids that most likely were going to the garbage by the store owner. I know nothing bout orchids so hopefully I will revive them through your vids. Thank you!! 👍👍. BTW I'm in Sauga.
No fair !! This video needed to be WAY, way longer. More deets on where you got ALL material and how you made the solution In which you planded the seeds, process, etc. you have a longer video maybe ????
I appreciate this channel about orchids, esp. Phals. I live in Asia , temp. In our area is 26 to 33deg. do you have a video on fertilizer mixtures ? And importantly how to rescue or revive Phals that hav wilted after flowering?. Thank you, I aopreciate your work
Im new to your channel but so glad i stumbled into your corner of the internet! Hey from your Northern Alberta neighbor. 🙌 Also, your cat is freaking adorable.
Thank you very much for your wonderful content. I really enjoyed the propagation from dry seed series. I’m curious, what fertilizer do you prefer. I tried searching the channel for this, I’m sorry if I’ve missed it. Couldn’t find it. I’ve even using 1/4 strength miracle gro with distilled water with my small orchid collection. It’s worked well with my propagated cuttings of lilacs and hydrangeas. But I question now if the stuff that’s working for you may be a better way to go. Thanks again.
