Ok from 1:51-1:55 not only did the trumpets individually nail that run and make no mistakes, they were ALSO perfectly balanced and I feel like that deserves some more recognition lol.
This is exactly the same arrangement, same tempo as the stage presentation BUT it's only 1/2 of what was in the Broadway show. The whole opening section in the choir robes is gone, about 4-5 minutes from the actual stage performance was taken out for TV. It really changes the whole number. If you didn't see the actual show , you're not aware of this BUT the tempo & vocal & dance arrangement are the same.
One criticism I've heard is that Sutton Foster can't "belt it out "as is required for this part. However, after seeing and hearing this, I think those people must be nuts. She belts it out just great and she looks great too.
The tone of Fosters voice is fine and articulated with a clean belt. A heavier and shiny voice is the best but then they don’t usually have the dancing anywhere near as strong. Or the words get muddled in too many overtones and the audience misses the innuendo. Reno Sweeney is a nightclub singer by design. Foster did an incredible job being both scissor leg dancer and clear voiced vocals. Completely unified with jaunt and sass.
@@llcooljay520 I saw her in this a few weeks ago and this number got the longest applause I've ever heard in my entire life. Literally like 5 mins. She was phenomenal.
I went to see Sutton for the first time at The Barbican, London on Saturday and I’m still in shock! Nothing prepares you for her talent in person, she's absolutely incredible!!! Countless standing ovations during the show, people in tears from sheer joy, it was a life changing experience!
Same here 😁 I saw her performance on the One Show and just had to go. I went to a show at the Barbican as well and completely blown away by her talent and goosebumps on goosebumps is totally correct.
That's how it goes, when you're a (talented like all get-out) pro. My mom danced in the original Broadway production ...she would have adored Sutton Foster.
That's one of the things I like best about Sutton - she seems to get so much joy out of what she does, and the enthusiasm is catching. "Can you believe I get to do this every night?"
as someone whos done a westend show of this musical i need to reiterate that this is the most fun number in the entire show by a long shot and i wouldnt be surprised if all those huge bright smiles are 100% genuine everyone would get so pumped when the intermission ended and it was time for this one that it was an effort to look like a bored hoity toity rich guy because youd just be vibrating with energy in anticipation of that dance to that balling music and youd look around to see your cast members white-knuckling the prop wine glasses to stop their hands shaking with excitement i come back to this song every once in a while just to relive that because i'll never forget it and it looks like it's a universal experience
It's really amazing how they were able to trim a full blown Broadway production number down to fit Letterman's performance area and still pull it off with this much power.

As someone who did a production of Anything Goes, "Blow Gabriel Blow" was DEFINITELY the MOST FUN number to perform, I always cracked a HUGE SMILE 😁singing out the last note.
I LOVE SUTTON FOSTER!! I had no idea she was even a Broadway star! I know her from her show, Younger, on TVLand. She's really sexy and funny on that show, but I had _no idea_ she could sing and dance so beautifully! I can't stop watching her in the "Anything Goes" Grammy performance. Holy shit snacks! This cast this music on this legendary stage was what made Mr. Letterman the best. This is why the world loves NYC and Broadway. And if the brunette is single your fan in Edmonton loves everything you are!
That blond girl that's behind Sutton in the beginning is really special. Her stage presence is great and she really seems to understand the time period and the character she is playing. I dunno, I just could not keep my eyes off of her. (Or Sutton)

My name is Gabrielle (female form of the name, but the angel was my namesake), I play the trumpet, and my high school is doing Anything Goes for our musical. I'm so pumped for this show.
Watching this I would imagine it couldn't get better. I was wrong. Just saw the filmed version of this. A stage show filmed in 2021, ten years after this version. AMAZING!! Sutton Foster is phenomenal and not to be believed! It was in Theaters for only two showings in U.K. in 2021 and recently in USA for two showings in March 2022. Pray they bring it back to cinemas so Sutton Foster can take us to the promised land again! Don't miss it if at all possible! THANKS FOR POSTING
Just saw the full London video (2021) and couldn't agree more. It's not just her singing and dancing, but her terrific comic timing in her dialogue. The way she works with the rest of the cast is a dream, and her number with veteran Robert Lindsay - the (added) song "Friendship" - is blissfully over-the-top: two pros at the top of their game having a ball and making each lyric and joke land!
What an amazing performance by Sutton and the ensemble. I feel like many people are overly critical of her performance as Reno Sweeney overall. I grew up with her being the only Reno, but as I became more familiar with all those who came before her and will come after her, Sutton definitely kills it. People like Elaine Paige, Patti Lupone, and Ethan Merman all have highly respected performances, and for their reputation and personal preference I personally prefer the more old school Renos; but I wildly appreciate Sutton Foster's version, especially since the dancing is so mesmerizing. Personally as someone who does not consider dance a strong suit, I feel for the Renos who couldn't do what Foster did, and I'm happy with any performance as long as they don't turn Reno into a squeaky chorus girl.

That dance move they do between 3:05 - 3:07 really highlights the difference between good and great dancers. You'll have to rewind each time, but take a look at each of the 4 girl dancers separately in the front perform that move and you can see that the brunette on the left is the best. Her head, arm, and leg movements just set her apart from the others. She just has that it" factor. Does anyone know her name?
+FreedomFighter2112 Well, agreed but how much is it affected by being on the stage of the tonight show instead of being at the regular venue at the theatre. I would reserve judgement for the show as I know none could make the cast without being an excellent dancer.
+FreedomFighter2112 You can actually tell that from the whole video; from the beginning she exhales that special something that makes her different from the others.
as a very tall dancer I always love seeing Sutton Perform with more average height dancers because it makes me feel less self conscious about myself! she’s an inch shorter than me and she looks graceful and kills it! makes me feel less like a baby giraffe learning how to walk for the first time and love my long twig legs! :’)
How do they remember where to position themselves without bumping into each other? Amazing dance troupe. Saw 42nd Street at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. What a fabulous, glitzy and stunning show.
This is one of those numbers you just have to see live. Saw this on the American Tour a few years ago and the audience didn't stop clapping for two or three minutes. They really blew it out of the water!

Reno and the Angels started the number alone ,dressed in choir robes on stage. They peel down during the number. Several different styles of music & orchestration and dance are used during the piece. The beats used evolved, too. By the time they get to the end, the entire cast is involved on stage, not shone on TV.
