Mini-skirted mods, swinging London go-go scenes. Cool 1960s fashions. The Yardbirds with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Michelangelo Antonioni Masterpiece !
As I recall, we were picked up outside the Hammersmith Odeon at about 08:00. I don't remember all the direction. Initially when we arrived at the Rikki Tic club we were given black tee shirts to wear. There was a lot of down time in the morning where we were hanging about inside the club and outside by the river, so they could shoot close up's or other scenes. ( The catering for the extras was terrible I remember, nothing like Grand Prix) In the afternoon we were inside, the band were playing. We were dancing, cameras moved in and out, I never made the final cut. At one point we were crowded round the front of stage, the band were not on, but movie magic weaves scene and action together. Those are my best memories of the day. We were not needed after that. I seem to remember standing next to the girl in the big yellow hat at one time.
Yes, we looking engrossed in the band. It's a pity because Vox Amplifiers are really reliable. I was in the fight scene at the back pushing and shoving with " care". I was 18 and Yardbirds fan myself. ( living in London, Soho and the clubs were normal haunts)
@@burningdaylights Um, U're close. BLUES INCORPORATED! ran by none other than THE GUVNER, ALEXIS KORNER,, Father Of British Blues & Cyril Davies. These 2 former jazz puristists ignited the British Blues scene in the late 1950's at the EALING JAZZ CLUB recruiting young influential blues players with blossoming ROCK N ROLL phenomon. Chek out the lineup that came thru beginning in 1961: BRIAN JONES, MICK JAGGER, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, John MAYALL, Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Zoot Money, Rod Stewart & many others. Notice that JEFF BECK & PETE TOWNSHEND weren't in Blues Inc. Jeff was self taught as well as Pete, both coming from musical families. Mayalls' Blues Breakers, Rolling Stones & Cream all have ties to Alexis Korners Blues Inc.
I saw those Yardbirds at the Studio Club in Dallas, Texas. It was also a small dance club, about the size of the one in this film. Everybody stopped dancing and stood gaping at the spectacle that was to become Led Zep. It was too novel and amazing to keep paying attention to your girl and your moves. Page blew me away when he used the cello bow. There was no stage, they set up and played on the dance floor, and I was within 4 feet of Page. What an experience.
@@tannwich5350 yes. Bounced around some, but were basically standing with jaws dropped most of the show. Did clap and scream like crazy after each song.
Wow, thanks for sharing! I had the same experience with seeing the Yardbirds in a small club in the Chicago area. Seen a lot of bands and people before they made it big.
RIP Keith Relf! I caught this movie at 2am when I was 14 years old (I'm 45 now) and it changed my taste in music completely! I was a Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin girl when all of my classmates were New Kids on the Block 😂. I was looked at like a freak, now it's cool among young people. I was ahead of my time! 🙄🤷🏼♀️
Am 44 years old and for as long as I can remember I've been a huge cream, mountain, james gange and more fan. However the Coulter around me was and has been telling me I was born in the wrong generation
I had a similar experience, recording this on the VHS on WPIX Channel 11 in NYC back in 1988 when I was 14. I used to watch this scene over and over again. While I loved the film, it made me sad I had no one to share it with; and, yes, NKOTB were the top act that year.
Hard to believe that 3 Rock guitar gods, Beck, Page, and Eric Clapton all grew up within 15 miles of each other. Must have been something in the water. Wow. RIP Jeff Beck.
Heard about what happened? That was definitely a heartbreaker! Can't believe we lost Jeff Beck! One of the greatest guitarists of all time! He did really well in Blow Up for sure! Jeff Beck, you will be missed! RIP Jeff Beck! Thank you for giving us awesome music!
@@maryvaughn7886 That’s the saddest part to me about Mr. Beck’s passing. He was a very healthy, intellectually vibrant man who could have lived another 15+ years as an active individual. I had looked forward to seeing him rock most of that time.
I agree with you. I saw the Yardbirds in concert in 1965 outside Rockford, Illinois. I was 17. The concert goers were mesmerized when they played. They really were ... and back then, when a band went on break, they would go out and mingle with the concert goers, how I got to meet Jeff Beck. God, he was gorgeous (hey, I was 17)! He drew me a picture, yup!
Jeff Beck replaced Eric Clapton when he left the band. So for Two brief shining moments two of the best guitarists in in the world were in the same band.
@@royrudd825 Jimmy Page was originally offered the spot after Clapton left but he recommended Jeff instead as Pagey was making some good money doing sessions. After bassist Paul Samwell-Smith left the band Jimmy was again approached and this time he joined, on bass. When it became obvious he was better than Chris Dreja on guitar, Chris switched to bass and for about 6 months or so it was dual lead guitar with Jimmy and Jeff.
@Anthony Marks What the USA has got? Chuck Berry, Howling Wolf, BB King, Freddy and Albert King, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker etc Without these guys the brits would still playing fucking skiffle bullshit.
@@steveburchfield5576 Admiration and recognition of excellence are not the same as idolatry. You're subscribed ro a lot of musicians yourself. Don't be a hypocrite.
This time in music Was so awesome. I'm nearly 70th. years old an was born and grow up in good, old Germany. When i was young I'm still listening the music of Yardbirds, Roy Orbison, Procol Harum and so on. This wounderful music accompanied my entire life and will never come back. 😢😢😢😢❤❤❤
I wish I had a time machine to experience those times and I'd take you back with me and my mum, yep, one big time travel bus full of all of us that are sick of now and nostalgic for the past even ones like me who wasn't there first time round.
For me this is a wonderful fillm. It encapsulates the 60s. The band The Yardbirds , later to become Led Zeppelin....I just think its a great insight into Britain in 1960s. Pretty good film as well !
Keith and Mick are still selling out STADIUMS.... They didn't even take a break from their last tour. Page hasn't been heard from in YEARS. Beck still rocks.... some.
I’m an older hippy. Jimmy was that cool back then, and then he grew older to look like a white haired elderly Asian lady. No shade, I grew into my Grammy. Zeppelin is my all time favorite band. ☮️🎶🕊
from new issue of Classic Rock magazine, “I basically got my Telecaster out to do that solo(Stairway To Heaven). Even though I’d been playing Les Pauls, I wanted to get that bite of the Telecaster on it. It was the same Telecaster that I’d played on the first album, the one Jeff Beck had given me that I’d used in The Yardbirds. A bit of a magical guitar, really.”
This was my favorite part of the movie which I never saw until 2022 on Turner Classic Movie Channel. Jeff Beck was annoyed at his guitar & smashed it up. He was so young & adorable. RIP guitar legend!!🥺🎸💕
Keith Relf died from electrocution while playing guitar, a bad grounding scenario led to the shock. The voltage over there was higher than in the US and was 50 Hz instead of the US standard of 60 Hz so it packed more of a wallop.
@@antoniozuquete5068 Yeah hey, I figured time flow is sometimes irrelevant and in any case others might stumble upon it. ;) You've taught me a new term man, thanks. I'll take it as a compliment.
I'm 62 & love watching old footage like this. It was sad to hear when Beck died, he was a legend though I was never a big fan of his. Page however to me is one of the pioneers of 60's/70's rock. A true Rock Icon.
Superb film by Michelangelo Antonioni. It was filmed in spring summer of 1966 while 2001 a Space Odissey was also being filmed in London. And they are two of my favorite movies.
Согласен отличный фильм Антониони. Фотоувеличение получил главный приз на Канском кинофестивале. В этом фильме Антониони хотет снять группу Кто, но они отказались сниматься. Потом думаю пожалели, что отказались.
This is the Jeff Beck I heard as a girl. This is my Jeff Beck. I send my love and prayers to his family & friends. I love you dear sir. Godspeed. Rest easy in Paradise., ** CRYING***

SOHO , This was REAL London History and MUSIC . .......ALL IS LOST TODAY
I saw Blow Up when I was a kid, don’t really know how. Ended up getting it on DVD years ago because I liked it. Then, in 2019, this scene basically happened to me. I got attacked by a concert crowd after getting part of a smashed guitar. Someone onstage just stuck it out and handed it directly to me after the curtain dropped. There were a group of girls just jumping on me, ripping pieces of wood off of the guitar body while it was in my hands. There were so many splinters. The major difference is that I had the body, not the neck. And I wanted the guitar, so I ran away and then wrapped it in a space blanket so nobody could see what I was carrying. So I come here to relive the moment. 😂
Maybe . I came really close to getting Blackmore's guitar at first Donnington Monsters of Rock ...he'd staged a long battle w fake exploding cabs .For the safety of everybody thank heaven there were two security thugs leapt in and ensured the guy who first got his hand on it was escorted off safely
@@Wayne_155 It’s literally a true story. I was jumped by a bunch of 13-16 year old girls, why would I brag about that? Hahahaha 💀I don’t care if you believe me, but this would be the lamest fake story of all time, dude. Honestly, how boring is your life that you think I’d just completely make up something like this, only to share it in a comment section of an old, somewhat niche video? 🙃 Do you really think this comment is getting me clout? My dad Christopher Edward Ayres at 37 sec mark he was a Mod back then only 20 years of age here , he was always in with cool 😎 people met the Kray twins too in London back in the old days 👍
Man the 1960's was one hell of a decade, so much stuff happened. It's totally insane. I'll probably have to devote an entire library to albums from the bands of that era alone O_o.
Tell me about it, man. The birth of pnk rock, garage rock, heavy metal, Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix, The Beatles, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Doors, 13th Floor Elevators, Captain Beefhart, so much much more.
@@spoderpoof383 The 60's were the greatest! I was a kid at the time but I seen it all through TV, magazines, Albums, I would go back in a heartbeat! 🤎 Especially, that Sunday Night back in 1964, when Ed Sullivan introduced.. 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓑𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓵𝓮𝓼 ! They are still my #1 Group!
Whenever I feel like I'm getting old, I like to know that I lived through the 60's and still can remember many of the pranksterish adventures that I had and can still fondly look back on.
1966 I was away at art school in Chicago. One of my local pals came to my after school job and said I have to see this movie. He said they showed full frontal nudity. That was big news in ‘66! I loved the movie and the big surprise was the Yardbirds performing! I loved everything about England in those days, even smoked Players. Great movie on so many levels. Thanks
So glad this was filmed for us to see. I saw them live with this line up in 66 but it was so damn long ago and I was very young, 13 I think. Sorry to say my memory has faded and I don't remember much about it. Time Keeps A-Rollin.
@@j.vonhavre1741 From June to August 1966 Jimmy Page was on bass, Jeff Beck on lead guitar, and Chris Dreja still on rhythm guitar. Then from August 1966 to November 1966 THIS lineup existed, where Dreja switched over to bass and Page was co-lead guitar with Beck. After Nov. 1966, Jeff Beck was fired from the group. Jimmy Page was never in the band at the same time with the original bassist, Paul Samwell-Smith.
This was a great movie. I saw it at the theater when it came out. Most people didn't seem to get it, and I'm sure that people today wouldn't understand at all as it is very dated. Jeff's guitar represented something that David was feeling. Jeff said he hated the whole thing. I miss you my old friend and David, too. Play for the angels...
The crowd obviously never used drugs. The ones I was taking back in those days made me want to dance and move around!!! The Yardbirds were way before their time!!
its a movie, so it is all acting. the two people dancing at the start are supposed to potray how people wanted to dance, but most were too cool to dance. The just sat around watching, and acting cool.
this how rock n' roll started smashing guitars as "expression"! thank you Jeff for dropping by in this prison planet. You gave us love, joy, happiness and tranquility. RIP.
@@imjustme1975 EXACTLY! I listened to a lot of ROCK music from 1969 onward. Jimmy Page in Zeppelin got me going at age 6 going all the way to Eddie V. Not ONCE! did I personally think that 1 player was better than or lesser than the other. I just enjoyed the music. CRITTERS! I didn't even know who Hendrix was! Then...As the internet took off with chat lines & other social forum sites took hold; now it: the GOAT🐐 B.S. etc. Heck, I liked ACR FREHLY from KISS, NEAL SCHON & many others. They're all great.
Really like this little mini biography of Jeff Beck with his reactions to sound quality and amp bashing antics. What a character! No wonder he added such an extraordinary dimension to the Yardbirds.
I absolutely love two things that this video shows us! First, you can see for a brief few moments, the 1959 Fender Tele that Beck Gave Page! This is the original one that later took on a different look created by Page. Second, I don't think it takes long for any accomplished Guitar player, to hear the Rage in Jeff's style of Playing and hammering like strums. This video briefly captures it, in its physical manifestation. Love it 😊
Eleven days since we got the news, and many of us are still deeply immersed in his music and processing what a tremendous gift Jeff was and is to us all. Words fail, still in awe...Rest in peace and love Jeff Beck.
Jeff Beck was a mind blowing guitar player. When I heard he'd passed I played Truth. Still one of the greatest albums of all time. It's been a few years since I watched Blow Up. This scene has so much going on. And is that Tom Holland from the Ipcress File when we first see the crowd. And they're all standing still. Except the couple dancing in the back.
I love this movie and this scene. The overall movie is about what is real and what is not, is something real with no one there to verify what you saw. And this scene is geeat not just to see the Yardbirds and a young Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck et al but to show how context is so important to what we believe. A broken guitar neck thrown into the audience by a rock star is "valuable" while the same guitar neck lying on its own in the street with no information on how it got there is garbage
If you're like me and thought you were going to hear "Train Kept A-Rollin'", here's the story; Antonioni loved The Yardbirds’ version of ‘The Train Kept A-Rollin’ ’·and felt it would work best within Blow-Up. However, copyright permission for the song could not be obtained by the October filming date, so Keith Relf modified the lyrics and created ‘Stroll On’ the day before actual shooting took place.”
The Lord from heaven sent us these greatest guitarists to make our hearts beat in the rhythm of Rock! Rest in peace dear Jeff Beck!🙏 Thank you for your amazing music!🎸🎵
Keith Relf and his sister Jane Relf formed the first rendition of the classical prog band Renaissance, after the Yardbirds broke up. Renaissance is still together and touring, featuring Annie Haslam. They are slated to do a post Covid tour soon.
1966. The Beatles were in their Revolver period. Bands like The Byrds, Herman's Hermits, The Animals, and Buffalo Springfield dominate the charts with psychedelia. Then you have the Yardbirds, forerunners of metal, cranking out "dangerous", angry, riff based thump such as The Train Kept a Rollin. You cannot overstate how hugely influential this band was. Little bit of trivia. It does not show it very well but I believe that's Jimmy's rainbow colored Telecaster he used when performing with the Yardbirds. That guitar went into storage when he was a member of Led Zeppelin but he pulled it out in the studio to record the solo for Stairway to Heaven.
Bands playing in the background in 60s and 70s movies were usually crap or embarrassing but this is on another level. The Yardbirds with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck ... out of this world. Page (in my opinion the greatest artist in any media in the 20th century) doesn't miss a beat.
Young Donald Trump changed everything! He is seen here, at 1:05 , digging the music scene and forever changing how people behave at rock n roll events, after instructing a young couple to teach the crowd to do the Trump.
I was only 9 years old when this was made who would have known Jeff Beck would have became my guitar Idol. I was also a fan of Led Zeppelin and even Keith r e l f who went on to form the short-lived supergroup Armageddon in the 1970s. Tragically he was electrocuted shortly thereafter😢
