Blower style doesn't dump their heat back to the case increasing CPU temps and other components, that's important if you are building in a confined space

@Swiss4.2

@@DogesMemeFactory Blower style cards keep your other components cooler as none of the heat from the card is recirculating inside your case, all the heat from the GPU will be exhausted out the rear of the card near the HDMI ports. In this regard blower style cards are better as your other components like your CPU will run cooler; although blower cards typically run hotter for the GPU as the cooler on blower cards are generally not as big and don't dissipate the heat as efficiently as a fan-style GPU can.

I much prefer blower gpus they look the part almost stealth like and get rid of the heat out the back of your case, i used to have a open air gpu and noticed my MB temps even with case fans were always a lot hotter than with a blower card and if your running an over clocked cpu you want it as cool as possible and not tons of hot air being blasted up the sides of it from a open air gpu, those gpus can get pretty hot when under load.

I made a mistake buying a blower GPU because i was expecting louder noise but when i eventually heard It... I wasnt believing how can It be so really awfully loud, it's just unbeareble to stay in the same room and work for hours with that noise, and to me this IS a real problem, i dont know what to do, i probably wont easily sell the gpu and on the other hand it's delivering a good service when It comes to performance... It would be stupid to spend money on some alternative disipation cause thsts the same money a different GPU could cost... I'm really frustrated with this issue, does anybody know about some cheap but reliable solution to cool GPU and VRAM with bigger and quieter fans ?

this is a good video but i would love to add some notes, the cards that have multi fan and big shroud and cooling system run really cool and very quietly they don't run hot and they are suited for PC gamers and used for one in a system, the blower style cards run super hot and very loud and they are suited for multi GPU configuration that can be put into a system that isn't sitting next to you on the desk. Even Nvidia has moved from that blower style design in their Founders cards and opted for more open and airflow centric one.
@MediamanStudioServices
@MediamanStudioServices 2 года назад
hi ExoTech DZ, I did not find that the Blower style cards run really hot. They are louder than fan style cards, but "hot". I don't think so. As for your comment "Even Nvidia has moved from that blower style design in their Founders cards and opted for more open and airflow centric one." Nvidia has moved away from any Blower style cards and have requested that AIB partners do not make the blower style cards as well. This is because they do not want anyone to uses these blower style cards in servers or multi GPU workstations. Nvidia is forcing customers to purchase the more expensive RTX Axxx series GPUs for these set up. It has nothing to do with Hot vs Cooler running design. Its all about money and profits for Nvidia and controlling the market and card design of its GPUs.
@TechLevelUpOfficial
@TechLevelUpOfficial 2 года назад
@@MediamanStudioServices not really, having a blower style cooler will really push those Vram chips into the their limits, it's not just the GPU, heck even some cards that have dual or triple fan decent coolers struggle to keep the VRAM cool. Nvidia moved from blower style coolers because they can't keep up with the GDDR6X heat output and the overall GPU heat output and this is a proven fact, their GeForce RTX cards aren't highly binned so they end up needing more voltages to run at certain speeds.
@MediamanStudioServices

@@TechLevelUpOfficial Well then the formfactor on the A5000 and A6000 is not good then? They are blower style GPUs. I know they run as a lower TDP. But I question your facts on the cooling design of GPU and Fan style not being good enough. I an currently building 8 GPU servers and I have a lot of insight to GPU thermal design and the capabilities of how theses devices perform under high workloads. Remember that the GPU fans are not the only factor in keeping a system cool to run at high performance. You need to get the heat out of the case as well. I run my Fan Style RTX3090 at full load everyday and I never run over 85-90 degrees. And this is well within the rated performance specs for this GPU. Case fans........... are the key

I don't know how people are able to work with this set-up for long term use. Also, I don't get why companies don't sell motherboard models with wider PCIe spacing for those looking to work with multiple GPUs. That's literally a new niche segment they could milk some extra money while providing a practical use. Alternative right now is to resort to risers.

@schlafanzyk
@schlafanzyk 2 года назад
You are correct. Blower style cards would get very hot at 0% fan speed as they have almost no airflow coming through the horizontal channel. The whole point of them is moving air through the system as much as possible, rather than dissipating heat into the system. They are great for servers, workstations and tight desktop systems or if you just want the rest of your system to get less hot during load (for example to prevent CPU throttling). They are supposed to be loud in a way, because that means they are doing their job. A single fan obviously needs more speed to do the job of three conventional ones. You are sacrificing quietness for lower internal system temperature.

what are your thoughts on combining 2 GPUs with different cooling solutins? For example the RTX 3090 FE's hybrid flowthrough cooling combined with a gigabyte rtx 3090 turbo blower style. just curious how would you position those 2 cards together.
@MediamanStudioServices
@MediamanStudioServices 3 года назад
Thanks a great question and I needed to think about this one a little. You can use these cards in the same system. As the Fan style turbo GPU is shorter that the FE card. I would have the FE on top, and the turbo on bottom. The turbo fan points down and sucks air up into the card, and should have enough air flow to keep this card cool. but you will still need to have at the minimum 1 PCIe slot between the turbo and the FE card in order to get air flow into the up draft FE fan. If you install the cards with the FE on bottom, it would be blowing hot air directly into the turbo card intake. But you would still have the issue of the VRAM on the back of the turbo card and the hot air from this card getting sucked directly in to the FE intake fans. So use a vented PCIe slot cover between the cards and use some case fans to create positive air pressure to push this turbo Vram heat out the back of the case. This design would also get more cool air to the FR Fan that blows out the back of the GPU. www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/in0a82/airflow_tip_for_inverted_atx_with_rtx30803090_fe/ Thanks for the good question, I hope I answered correctly.

@@MediamanStudioServices lets say I only have a motherboard (Gigabyte B550 Vision D) with the top pcie x 16 with only 3 slots space and another x16 slot after that. to achive the 1 slot allowance for the dual GPU I thought of the solution of having the dual slot blower card on top and the tripple slot FE card on the bottom. Since the FE card has a feature that turns off the up draft fan (both fans sometimes) when it is not needed, I thought this was an ok solution until I start rendering where every fan in the system would ramp up. Another issue that I just realized while looking at my rig is that the FE card would interfere with the headers and connectors at the bottom of the motherboard which would require me to find 90 degree variants of those cables adding to the requirements. This mixed card type build was way more complicated that I thought. I was hoping I could retain my motherboard because I have 2 drives in it that is running windows storage spaces in raid0 and I just don't feel comfortable switching boards and run into issues with those drives.

Assuming no air restriction, which style cools more effectively? I assume they are comparable albeit the blower will be louder. How reliable are the blower style fans vs the multi fan? I ask because I do a lot of rendering. My 3070 is a 2.5 slot card and my 3060 is a 2 slot card. That essentially leaves a half slot of space between the cards and the top card runs hotter because of it. So, I have been thinking about buying the blower style. But I am worried about it only having 1 fan vs 3 fans. If the 1 fan dies, the card is essentially a paperweight until the fan is replaced.

As i do not recommend looptop for any kind of 3D work as Desktops are faster, even when the specs as marketed as the same. Laptops are just slower due to thermals and power limitations. But if you are going to get laptop, do your research and check the specs carefully before you buy. Unless you move around everyday, purchase a small form factor PC as these can still be somewhat mobile if you need to travel. and still offer top performance.

Would using risers, like they do on minig rigs, solve the issue with fan style gpus? I think that would create some space for air to move around, although looking ugly. I don't know if it would decrease the performance in viewport and while rendering?

Is it realistic to have a Ryzen 59xx series with two 3 series cards, fan style? Would you need risers then? Or could you use eGPU external? Not sure if that affects license, but at least now I have two Redshift licenses.
@MediamanStudioServices
@MediamanStudioServices 3 года назад
Hi Barkingshelite, I would go with the Riser cable. I myself have never used a eGPU but to stay directly on the PCIe bus would be the fastest bandwidth for rendering. You can get the Lian Li 011 evo (2021 model) case and use the first slot for the one GPU and the case comes with a bracket to relocate the a GPU on the front/side of the case. I am releasing a new video today to test GPUs in a desktop system to see if there is any loss in performance on a PCIe 8x/8x system. Please stay tuned and watch that video Thanks for watching

@@MediamanStudioServices Thanks Mediaman. I subsequently watched your video on the external PCI cases, that might be an option as well. But also saw your video on the Lenovo thread ripper. Need some more testing but tbh these cards run fine in itx builds as is with their blowers. If they don’t break I’m inclined to believe that the higher temperatures don’t matter that much? What do you think?

@All-In Wonder Thank you so much for your input and sorry for the late reply. That really gives me some piece of mind. Thing is I’ve had the 1060 for years and I don’t even remember what I had before that and what the thermals were. Now that you mention it I think I faintly remember that about 15 years ago I had an AMD card which would run hot like 90~100 degrees and that was fine but it’s been so long and I’m so uninformed these days. 😬
