Hey everyone! In today's lesson I'm going to show you all one of the most popular (and greatest) acoustic folk songs EVER: "Blowin' In The Wind" by Bob Dylan. We go over it in 3 ways, starting with 3 easy chord shapes + strumming and eventually figuring out how to play it exactly like it is on the recording.

► Need help with the basic chords and strumming? My beginner guitar course will help you build a solid foundation one step at a time:
goodguitarist.com/beginner-gu...
The lesson is broken down into three parts: the chords, the strumming and the embellishments.
The chords: There are only 3 chords used in this song - G, C and D. These are all pretty simple (among the first few chords that almost everybody learns). We practice playing them using downstrokes only, to help us get used to the chord progression. This is the first thing you should get comfortable with.
Strumming: This song uses a really common strumming pattern. If you need help with it, I recommend practicing it over a single chord many times, and then incorporating it into the chord progression.
Embellishments: Time to add all those extra bits and pieces that make this song come alive! I show you how to play them, one at a time, as we work our way through the tune, and then we practice them together nice and slow. Be sure to incorporate these extra bits one at a time and to take your time with each of them as combining the rhythm part with all of these will take some work and some patience.
I hope you enjoy the lesson and I'll see you soon!
-James

If you're having trouble putting it all together, remember to take your time and learn it bit-by-bit. This may be a 3-chord song, but it definitely has some interesting embellishments. If you need help, don't forget to check out my free resources listed in the description.

I agree...this is the closest thing i’ve ever heard to the original recording. It is a beautiful song, so simple, maybe one of the best songs ever written. This is one of the first songs I’ve learned how to play and I’ve always played it with G, C and D as well. Thanks to you I was able to improve, just with some details from you, my version of this classic, beautiful song.

There are at least two live black & white live performance if Bob Dylon showing how he varies the chords playing. He sung the song in G key, D key, E key etc. depends. Joan Baez used Em and D7 in her version. She sung in different keys as well.

I would suggest a slight change. In the third measure, play a C chord, then G/B. Play the G/B with the B 2nd fret 5th string, D open 4th string, B open third string, and D third fret 2nd string, and the 1st string muted. Then the D/A. It is the same effect in the base line: a C walking down to B then an A. See if that sounds more like the record. (Not original with me, but that is how I learned it.)

That's exactly how I always played it for the last 45 years, and I was under the impression that the only two people in the world playing it like that were Bob and I. Now I know there are at least 3 of us....

I enjoyed your video and plan to use it to learn this song. I have a questions though. I did find an original video recording of Bob Dylan playing Blowin' in the Wind from 1963 and see that he is not using a capo - it looks to me like he just plays the standard C-D-G. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Here is the link to the RU-vid video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vWwgrjjIMXA.html

This is not exactly like the recording! It's closer than most others on RU-vid - but not perfect at all. It's the wrong rhythm pattern on the bars with a single chord (mostly the G's). It says "down down - down up down" and not "down down - up down up". I understand why you chose it though since the original rhythm feels quite unnatural. I havn't heard a single one play it right - it's like nobody's listening. And there are missing a lot of details like the hammer on after the first verse etc. You also forget the D/f# etc. I could go on. I like your content and respect your effort, dont' get me wrong. The title is just misleading and an untrue statement. Now about 50.000 people think this is the correct way to play it - when it's not. And that's your responsibility alone. In respect of Dylan you could think about removing the "exactly like the recording" in the title. Regards another fellow guitar teacher and life long guitarist :)
