Bill Hartman i pushed around 800w-1000w to my first 12" mtx thunder 5500 and that thing didnt quit for a solid 6 months (i know they're not built for that and im much smarter to actually keep the gain tamed on my amps but when i first got into audio i just said 'fuck it, gain to the max!' on a 1100W rated RF amp.) needless to say that 12" pounded for being one single 12" and still rivals my 600w RMS RF P2 to this day! MTX is quality!!!

Well, maybe if won't fry this fast, but 120 volts would be quite beyond its specs nonetheless: the 120V outlet would provided it with a continuous (RMS) power of 120²/4=3600 watts, which is over thrice the power it's been designed to handle continuously. But you're right. This video shows that MTX is a clear winner (it held up to the abuse for the longest), followed by the 12" pioneer IMPP.

They didn't state on which current the voltage was delivered, but I would assume 12 amps, and that would total out to 1440 watts.

Simple Ohms law....Since current is a factor of resistance and voltage, we take the two known values -- R in ohms Ω, and E in volts and solve for current, expressed as I. I = E/R so Current in amps = 120 volts divided by 8Ω ohms....or...15 amps. To obtain power, in watts, we use the power formula, P=IxE ... so Power (watts) equals I (amps) x E (volts).....so... 15a x 120v = 1800 watts. If the voice coil on the woofer to be obliterated is of a 4Ω resistance -- 120v / 4Ω = 30A and 120V x 30A = 3600 watts.. yes... 3600! Thats as much as the average electric hot water heater, or a big-ass air conditioner. Granted, thats only the load of one of the two 120 volt legs, still...a SIZABLE amount of current!

Vinnybrain This is AC so you need to work out the impedance not resistance, so to work it out properly you need to find the inductive reactance (Xl)first which is 2 x pi x freq x speaker inductance and measure the DC resistance of the speaker. The resultant formula is Z (impedance) = sqrt of R^2 + (Xl^2-Xc^2) - Then I = V/Z and P=I*V

David Jovanovic I found the Pioneers to be very good subwoofers. Their free air types were especially decent but this was 12 years ago when I was in school : P. Everything they make in subs today are not on par in my opinion. Same with Pioneer amplifiers, gone are the days of the GM-X944. It's all china made trash today. Their HUs however are still good, the PRS is very nice indeed.
