It’s been an incredible week of both highs and lows. The Mustang is looking INCREDIBLE thanks to JaxWax and Zach Copus with Tidy Rides in Columbus! But just before we left home, the Malibu’s engine threw a wrench in my weekend plans.
Usually when a channel blows up their stuff, they make it seem like its no big deal. I love how honest Bill was about this. This to me feels way more honest as to how a person truly reacts to their baby blowing up.
That feeling sucks! I've sold projects a few times because I didn't have the money to fix a broken engine or transmission. I've had bad luck with transmissions in hotrods.
.060 over makes it really thin between the cylinders and sealing that tiny area with an MLS gasket will be challenging when spraying 300. Id sleeve it if it were mine, keep the bores small.
Ohhhh man that's a shot in the gut! Such a terrible feeling, those sounds will haunt your dreams. Really really sorry to see what happened. Not sure if there's anything we can do to help but if so let us know!
Hey Bill don’t listen to some of these jerks online we are cut from the same cloth , we work hard for everything we have. We cherish our family and friends. Don’t listen to the nonsense. Tuff break on the engine ol boy I’m sure uncle Bob will come through like always cause that’s what he do. Great vid as always.
Kenny! Good to see Kenny Powers in video again. Vale keepers are either yep or nope! Very unfortunate. At least it had the decency to let loose going around the block and not after you arrived at your destination.
That sucks Bill, losing a valve is never good. I hope the block is salvageable. Bob flipped that block like it was a feather, strong dude, and a good friend. I pray things work out. The detailer did a hell of a job on the Mustang`s paint. Mans got skills. Stay safe all, God Bless.
I love the cars, the content and Ms. Vicki always has a beautiful smile for all of us. That’s why I come here. I have been subscribed to this channel long enough to watch Bill bust his butt digging ditches, excavating, laying pipe, etc. Good for him… when his old back wore out, he used his noodle to start this adventure… I hope he never stops. Scotty from Lancaster.
Big change in the Mustang GT.Good ones. My younger brother passed away at one in the morning on Saturday. We're in need of some help. Love you all. And the dogs.
Big Bill thank you for supporting the WFD again always awesome to see the WFD on your channel much appreciated and congratulations on 123,000 viewers and I can remember when you were worried about going out on your own… Awesome to see good people making good things happen
Blowing up a engine is like someone kicking you square in the nuts!!!!! Good luck on finding parts in this time we are living in.seems like nothing is available anymore. That blue oval cursed your Malibu...lol keep up the videos.
Bill- It really hit home when you described the feeling of having an engine go unexpectedly..... especially when you just got finished putting it in and dialing it. I had the same thing happen last fall, on a brand new BBC in my gen 2 camaro. just went to the fuel station to top off for a car meet that next morning and the #7 intake head just popped off, clean break, on what was just a normal drive for some fuel- That set me back so far I will spend the next year paying it off, and it also stopped any other things I wanted to do to my car this year in it's tracks. At the end of the day, we tear it out, make it great again, and move on. You will do the same. Good luck, and thank you for putting into words how it feels to lose something that you have worked so hard to make your own. God bless
What a pleasant surprise on a Sat. night...... remember in the youtube world, more problems = more footage. Goodluck with whichever road you choose to travel.
As someone who just Drove there race 3000 miles to race, that is one of my worst fears. It’s what makes me nervous about a fresh’n up, installation errors (I doubt that is what happened) or new parts quality or just plain making a mistake is easy to do, I hope you can figure out the cause or do an analysis video how you would try to figure it out so there isn’t another failure. Thanks for sharing and sorry for your bad luck…. But damn you are a great story teller, when the music changed I was like oh boy here it comes…. Keep doing what you are doing, love it!
That's why I've always said (just because it's bran new don't make it any good) but you're right it's those little things that create tha most heartache
I've seen more nitrous destroy blocks Pistons and heads and Dyno testing doing the same to all above, if you ever want to find a flaw in valves Springs and rotations run nitrous and or dyno test, I've seen buckets of Pistons from nitrous, and salvage yards full of blocks neither one of these are bad in moderation but the dyno test that I saw you go through with this brand-new block looked to be extreme and the damage very seldom show up on the dyno it shows up on road test, adding new part,or going to the store etc.but this is my opinion and I'm a man that has built on a budget for over 30 years, and my last block a small supercharger with a bad carburetor found a bad valve that snap the head off, stim and retainers still in tack and now I've got a block that has to be sleeved, in 30 years I've only had one that dropped a valve this was because a customer over revved it when I told him it could not Rev over 6,000, and engine could rev. 7800, none of my business but I'm trying to pass 30 year of experience to good people, if a engine is going to let go it is going to, but the stress to parts from nitrous and dimeo can be extreme and no doubt I have seen buckets of parks and 30 years without a doubt you have definitely seen more race damage then I have but thirty years as a auto technician dealing with race and daily drivers I've seen a lot of abuse, and farm boys can tear up some crap LOL. God bless and be with all of y'al PS.I pray y'all have a great season
Man my heart sank with you when you said you thought it dropped a valve. But we all know that comes with the territory of high compression and higher valve spring pressure but it still sucks! Hopefully everything will come back together in time.
Well, well, well. I'm very sad to hear that the Malibu's engine is damaged. Since Mother Hubbard's Engine Cuboard is bare and if Uncle Bob can't get the 421 back together again, Bill may have to race Jimmy Dale Billy Bob in Bill's recently purchased bad ass Small Block Ford Turbo Mustang GT. As Billy says, "Come get you some". Hell yeah!
Damn brother hate to hear that happened. I have a fresh 406 that I hope to fire up in the next couple months and the thought of a part failing makes me sick. Hope you can get it back up and running soon 👍.
A few years ago I went to load my race truck on the trailer and the motor seized up during idle. The cloyes cam gear rolled the keyway on the drivers side head and caused lots of damages to both heads, valves, pistons etc. It took a year and 15k to fix everything. Sucks big time to lose a motor like that.
The mustang is looking good the man has a lot of talent. I feel for you Bill I know exactly how you feel and I'm hoping that uncle Bob can resurrect it from the dead he to has amazing talent. Try and forget the haters they are miserable people and jealous to say the least. God bless and as always be safe 👍
At least with it letting go at home you saved the trip money to Kentucky to use on parts for repair, crazier shit has happened but thats racing. Wish you well on a speedy recovery though, are the heads repairable or are you just getting a new set and repair them for spares?
What you are going through could happen to anyone of us at anytime. I’m nervous about the 440 that’s going together right now for a late buddy of mine’s 63 Belvedere that I hold the privilege of being the caretaker of. Trying to get it back to the track this year.
Very true. I built sbc427 installed it and blew it in a week. Then rebuilt and lasted a month, then found great shop to do work and it lasted a year. Now I'm at 440 cubes and it's lasted 2 years but I think it's time for a refresh
Man this makes me so sad and there's nothing anyone could have done to know... sucks. I know she will be back better than ever though. Keep on plugging bill you got this!
Sorry that happened hopefully the block is able to be saved and fixed might want to find you another block for a back up in case something happens that it can’t be used again and I’m glad it happened at home then far away from home
Hopefully the blocks still good I dropped two valves in my turbo h22 quick head swap and it still ran fine ! Pistons did have some dents but still layed down over 500 to the tire on 91 pump not to shabby for a 4 cylinder
Bill I'm sorry to see the Malibu hurt again but I think this time it's just VERY MAD AT YOU FOR BUYING A MUSTANG!!!! I hope it's salable and get back in the car soon. I know you are Heartbroken and I can see it. . Keep up the great work and I was very happy to see Kenny Powers again I hope things are getting better for him and his family. Stay safe
Sorry Bill I know how bad that sucks. It's one thing when you're spraying 350-400 shot or Cramming 38lbs of boost in it. But when you're just tooling along and a motor lets go It's like WTH.
Wow, what a scene. I paused the video and saw a scene with June Pup in the back happy and smiling with her Dad rolling with laughter and fun in the scene, what a precious moment. Also, hooray for Tommy for being a cool son and taking the possible punishment from his mentor, his cool Dad!!! Great video 📸
When one goes like that and you're just cruising around, it leaves a million questions. You have an excellent support system though, you'll turn it around and come back better than before. All the machine shops around here are 4-6 months backed up. That's a whole season lost if you pop one.
My uncle had a GT. Just like yourself, fond memories riding around back then. Tuff break,, but I'm sure you have the knowledge and capabilities to fix it...
The motor in the 64 just became a target lol. Snatch it pull trailers with the Buffalo when Bob figures the direction out, put that back together for the 64.
Man I love you and the boys channels!! I wish we had a mechanic like you here in Missouri! I have been through the fire with my 2011 silverado two jasper motors and a transmission and its never been right!! It's down again needing another transmission after a year on a rebuild! Anyways you all are awesome, looking forward to your next video!!
Man that sucks. Had the exact same thing happen to the first race motor I had built. Popped the head of a valve off and destroyed it about the 10th trip up the road. I had to sleeve the block, etc.. shit happens!! You’ll get it back right
Hey brother tough break about that Speedmaster block .I hope it works out for you. I don’t know much about those blocks but dart makes a really nice SHP block small block Chevy I know people that are getting close to eight hp I’m actually thinking about going that route because I know my small block Chevy is not gonna do that even though it’s a 010 four bolt main .The Dart blocks are about $2100 but maybe if you contact Dart they’ll do something for you. Good luck, my friend.
I am 78 years oil and drag raced since I was 16, everything from a 1 "Pure Stock" 67 Chevelle to an IHRA Pro Stock 1990 Trans AM, and have lost a lot of engines, and like you, it hits me hard every time, like losing a friend.
That Mustangs been my dream car since a buddy had a red one just like it in Highschool that would black track aslong as you wanted I was always so jealous driving a junky car!!! Thank you so much for all the great content Bill!!! 💯🇺🇸🤘🏻 Much love from Mustang,Oklahoma!!! Hope you get the Malibu back going soon I hate too see that just glad it didn’t happen somewhere away from home!!!
The 421 sounds just like the 350 in my son's hearse. Out of the blue it started making ugly noises, just driving through town. This will be the 3rd engine in the hearse! Good luck, Bill.
As bad as it is to have to deal with this, at least it happened before you loaded up and headed down to your destination. In a way it was fortunate that you took that last drive around the block before putting the Malibu in the trailer. Oh, and I agree with erikk was says you are a rich man. Except, perhaps not in the way he means. Yup Old Man Bill is rich beyond measure!
Sorry that happened Bill, but things do happen for a reason, may not be right now but there is a reason it did. I’m a diesel mechanic in Montana, have done 3Cat engines since June of last year and just lost a power stroke in one of our company pickups🤷♂️ not sure what the future holds,a raise would be good though $😉😂. Good luck
It's been a long time since I've been able to watch, I can't wait to see what you have had going on Bill.. I have to catch up on your other videos.. take care buddy. Adam
This channel reminds me of “ the wonder years” or some kind of show I grew up with must be the way he narrates it he’s good probably why his channel does so good gives me James earl jones vibes or Morgan freeman lol
I have been building my last hot rod for 6 years and it will be another 2 years before it is done. You can build a nice race vehicle without being rich. Mine is a 75 Chevy luv twin turbo, fuel injected small block Chevy. Good luck with your Malibu. One old man to another 😊
We have all been through it especially if you raced cars for a while. I had a big block built for a 1970 Nova I had at the time. I didn't have twenty miles on the engine. I stop for a red light and the car stops running the guy that was with me I said to him something is wrong because this car's engine Has never just stopped running like that. I start the car back up and pulled into a gas station the engine isn't making any noise So I get back into the car to drive it back to my garage and I noticed the oil pressure was all over the place. I get the engine pulled out that night and take it to the guy who built my engines at the time Ted Borowski. So he called the next day to come to his shop. So I do and he shows me one of my roller lifters. The roller on the lifter had come apart and by doing so the roller and the needle bearings went through the whole engine. The crank was messed up a couple of cylinders the cam a couple of pistons and I believe a valve got it as well. And yes the lifters were brand new. Like I said if you raced long enough we all go through this it's part of racing
