It's hard to beat that feeling when one of your favorite movies finally gets an HD release. That makes for a hard dose of reality if the quality doesn't wow in the way we expect a Blu-ray to. Sure, the DVD looked pretty crummy the last time you watched it, but this Blu-ray… could it actually be worse?!
In this episode of Retro Tech Select, we'll dissect the images of two Blu-ray releases that beg the question if they were worth the upgrade at all. In the process, we'll take a typical nostalgic glance at the video formats of yesteryear, and determine if there's real merit of sticking to older releases of the films you love - or if it's time to pony up and buy the new discs.

I can't say I've come across that look WORSE than DVD, but I have come across a few cheap release basically look the same as watching the DVD upscaled in a BR player because they seemed to have just blown up the standard def DVD transfer with no further clean-up or tweaking
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 3 года назад
Yeah, "worse" is an overexaggeration for both of these, but they definitely aren't a real jump from one format to another.

@@RetroTechSelect I've got a an older BR release of Men in Black like that. Didn't really impress me much because it feels like watching an upscaled DVD

The Miramax Pokémon movies (4-7) are an interesting case study. All look better on Blu-ray than DVD, but they seem to have odd quirks. 4 is soft, 5 has the same blue tint as the DVD, 6 & 7 are film transfers despite the English versions of those movies never having a theatrical release (maybe they were shown at a film festival), and I think 7 might have been produced completely digitally to begin with.

disc authoring for blu ray has recently dropped steeply, now that 4K has become more common. la la land and whiplash, which i just received are so soft and drab on my 92 in. projector, that i thought my projector was malfunctioning.

I bet there are some blu rays of public domain movies are made from the same VHS transfers and 1:77.1 black bars and stupidly done cleaning by DNR

I will always take resolution over richer colors, nowadays i find dvds unwatchables, i am really obssesed with picture quality, but dammn that goldeneye dvd has wayyy better color grading that the Blu Ray, the Blu Ray literally look like raw footage from a log profile on a digital camera, its washed out and lacking contrast and saturation. We can only hope Bond 4ks are correctly graded.

Goldeneye is one of a few Bond movies that are must-have 4K releases for me. I have heard the 4K transfer on iTunes looks much better than what we see here.

@@RetroTechSelect the first Blu-Ray of Patton was infamously bad, everyone looked like wax statues and it took many years for a proper Blu-Ray to come out.
@DaNiElBoYd100

@@jacksonteller3973T2 may have Patton beat for tumultuous home video releases, especially in high definition. The very first Blu-ray came from a very old master so while slightly sharper, it just felt underwhelming. Then they DNRed the crap out of the Skynet edition. A few years later Japan commissioned a remaster that came out as a bare bones release here in the States and is still the best version available. Then they went back to the wax works DNR nightmare for the 4K release (though the black levels and color depth are nice, it doesn't matter much when everyone looks like they're in a wax museum).

The resolution and picture quality is what makes a movie for me, the color grading can sometimes not always look that good, but the color grading is usually not a problem, i'll just adjust color settings on my tv. The reason I don't like dvds are because of how things can be impossible to see from far distances. In a wide angle shot from far away on a dvd zoomed in on a person it looks like a mess, but on blu ray it's clearer.

I believe some of these problems occur due to the displays being used to master the blu ray transfer having high peek brightness's near 1,000 nits and the tvs and players being used dont A have the color accuracy or B aren't bright enough to TRULY show what was originally intended. if you have a mastering monitor with a adobe rgb delta e of 1 witch is pretty much as color accurate as it gets and then display the same content on a 2007 720p tv that barely handles s rgb there will be a problem. sorry for bad English

Digital noise reduction really harmed some key releases. The Predator Ultimate Hunter Edition was probably one of the worst offenders I've ever seen on Blu-ray. Thankfully the 4K redeemed that.

Another big blunder in Blu-ray transfers, sometimes, comes from Disney. There are multiple examples of classic Disney movies on Blu-ray looking like blurry and smudgey messes due to an overabundance of smoothing filters. A notable example of this comes from the Sword in the Stone Blu-ray. Even compared to the VHS release, the Blu-ray is smudge city. You lose out on tons of details in the art because of this.
@RetroTechSelect

エステティック Funk It's sad that Disney essentially tries to hide the craftsmanship of their animators. The original Mobile Suit Gundam on Blu-ray looks pretty "smooth" as well.
@AestheticFunk
@AestheticFunk 6 лет назад
Retro Tech Select It really is. People who buy these old shows and movies on Blu-ray are more than likely going to be fans of the old style. Film grain hurts no one while adding smoothing filters on top to remove grain does damage the picture quality. Lots of old anime suffer from bad Blu-ray releases as well. It's a real shame.

i have a lot of DVDs, since some time now i am ripping (my owned) DVDs to MKV files, and in the process crop black bars (wich cause bigger file size) and also sharpen the movie, tv series with lapsharp, wich is a convolution sharpening tool, much better than unsharp compression in x265 makes a 6 Gig video a 1,8Gig video, wich is great for storing tons of videos, a 4Tb external HDD can store a lot and its all in one place, but dont sell or do away with your DVDs, just achive them in the attic, that way, if something goes wrong with your HDD, you still have the originals, cheers

I have to laugh. BLU RAY missed every chance with me. (1) I didn't want to get caught in the BR VS HD war. (2) I remained happy with DVD. (3) I needed the convenience of my laptop or tablet that played DVD but not BR. (4) My new laptop upgrades DVD to a near 4K quality. Strike 4! You're out!

@probablymelgibson2344

@@RetroTechSelect imo its transfers, but it dependa as well, fortune star holds the rights to a lot of these films and a lot of times they supply companies really old transfers. Also if they supply an transfer but that transfer has a different color grading the company cannot do nothing, unless they fight fortune star, something that a lot of companies dont do, fortune star basically handles situations poorly as well, multiple times they had original mono audios but they wouldn't supply them to other companies, TLDR licensing issues and poor handling of the situation.

This is why DVD is good enough for me. Blu Ray is way overhyped, even though they’re 720/1080 instead of 420/520 like a DVD. I mean I skipped blu ray and went straight to Amazon Video to buy/rent in HD, and still watch my old DVDs. I mean who cares about the minimal “bit rate” difference? Amazon Video and Disney Plus really don’t look that much different than a blu ray.
