Blue Belt Pisses Off Brown Belt with a Sloppy Submission

Today we've got a question from a BJJ Blue Belt, named Tye, who recently pissed off his Brown Belt training partner.
He's a young guy & the Brown Belt was someone who essentially took him under his wing. Well, the other day they were rolling, and Tye caught the Brown belt in the Guillotine.
The Brown Belt does not tap, Tye makes multiple adjustments, and at some point, 4 or so minutes in, after the Brown Belt escaped, he bashed the Blue Belt for the rest of the round.
After they got done rolling the Brown Belt was obviously pissed.
Tye sends the message asking what he should have done in this situation.
In this video, I'll give you a specific tip to prevent this from happening again. I'll also discuss the higher belts perspective and what he could have done.
Hopefully, you found the answer useful Tye, and for anyone else out there who has had this situation happen to them, I hope this helps you too.
Thanks for watching.

There’s a fallacy in that logic, as in if that’s the case then the higher belt should never let the lower belt do anything but just constantly submit them and smash them. We need to be able to trust our teammates so instead of wrenching on a submission that’s not working and possibly causing injury, just move on to something else then ask how to improve.

@@TC_Personalthe key word is competition… people come from all walks of life to train, different ages, levels of fitness, injuries, etc. it’s called a class because it is the place of learning. At this point in my training/injury curve, I just take it as my loss for letting them get a clean hold of my neck in the first place. Missing training from a sore neck is a net negative relative to tapping out.

I had a similar situation a couple months ago. A blue belt training partner who is a lot taller than me, put me in a foot lock. He has a reputation for being overly aggressive, and I tapped. I had been a little lazy and felt I should amp it up a little to start matching his energy. He put in a foot lock again, and I tried harder to get out. This time he decided to go even harder and ripped on my foot before I had time to tap. I felt a few pops, and knew right away I injured something. Afterward, I talked with him, and he told me he felt he should give me a challenge because of my higher rank. Well, two months later and my foot isn't any better. Moral of the story: don't rip on submissions to be challenging; your just acting like an asshole.

In my third week of training I caught an ankle hook without knowing what I was doing. Just saw a foot and thought, “Well, I know it’s not supposed to turn this way! Let’s try that.” My blue belt partner immediately verbal tapped and coach told me to avoid submissions that use a foot as a lever against a knee for now. Nobody got hurt, no feelings got hurt, and I understand now why what I did was so dangerous. That blue belt is my go-to training partner now, and he’s hugely accelerated my progress by talking through things with me mid-roll when I ask. I think Coach set the example for us to have a dynamic where we can pause at any point and ask questions. It’s really cool to get that kind of partnership at such an early stage of my training.

If I get a higher belt in a choke like that, especially if he's smaller than me I wouldn't crank hard on it. I also tap super quickly to everything while rolling. Tbh if they don't tap I'd probably just let it go. It ain't a fight, or a competition. Or like you said, ask for feedback!

And also in the end guys… he got out of the bad position so it wasn’t good anyways for the tap part. Having the technique and choke he would’ve tap in 6-10 seconds max. Make the technique legit but with the neck crank for someone tough it won’t work but just make them not want to train with you. But yes talk to each other let these egos in training go. With 3 years I still don't know what I don't know so being a guy with significantly less time they really don't know what they don't know. I'm really worried about hurting someone because we all have to go to work tomorrow so be nice to your sparring partners. Especially as a guy who is 6'2" 235lbs and pretty darn strong it's really easy to hurt someone from just strength and weight.

If you ask me, cranking on someone's neck for several minutes is absolutely crazy. People really need to be education about the potential causes for chronic neck/spine issues if they are going to be training in something like BJJ or wrestling. That kinda stuff ruins peoples' lives after a few years of training with bad training partners; if you like being able to do physical activities like grappling, martial arts, sports etc., you should really take that kind of thing seriously and really try to avoid causing those kinds of issues to the people you train with. People act like it's not a big deal and just part of training, but you can EASILY avoid over 90% of the stuff that causes those issues just by being considerate in training, and you won't think it's not a big deal once you start losing function in your peripheral nervous system and can't do any of the activities you used to love all because some morons took no issue with trying to crunch on the vertebrae in your neck for a chance at "winning" a friendly roll. About a third of the people I've known who have done BJJ for a decade or more eventually had to quit because of those kinds of chronic injuries and can't really do any kind of contact sport/activity because of those problems.

Disagree with the comments and agree with the video. Cranking necks like that teaches you nothing about technique, and if you rely on force you aren't tapping anyone your size who is actually good. He didn't tap cause it wasn't a submission, and of course his defence should have been better, but why would you tap to a bruise? Getting angry wasn't the answer here, but guess what? I only cooked him because he was being a dck. He apologized after wards and acknowledged he was being a dck. The other time another coach was playing leg locks w me and I guess thought because he was a higher belt he was better at playing leg locks. Well I trained leg locks since white belt and did a leg lock class once a week for 3 years consistently and many years off and on prior to that. This gym, the only one he ever trained at and the one he got his belts from, didn’t really do leg locks because it was a traditional Gracie gym. I was surprised he started playing leg locks but I figure ok, he’s playing leg locks so I’ll do leg locks and spun out of his lame toe hold and caught him in another leg lock pretty hard. The more experienced black belt should have tapped. Ego and pride got in the way of the black belt tapping. My advice to the Blackbelt is to tap as it will prevent injuries. No good reason for the brown not to simply give the blue the tip he needs or, either just get out, or tap, and continue the roll then give him said tip afterwards. The four minute neck crank is more on him, from what it sounds like. Just gonna pile on and say: Brown belt should have tapped. Get your ego out of it and use the safety protocols that are in place to protect yourself from undue damage. If you're so terrified that someone will think they got one over on you and you need to post-tap let them know they didn't really have it, fine, I guess. But don't just sit and eat damage and then be upset that a blue belt held a guillotine they thought they had. (Also how's your guillotine escape?)

Seriously, how is it so hard to give a 1 min summary of safety rules and gym etiquette to new guys and visitors. No gym seems to do it. Or just have a sheet of paper that they can read before the lesson. Is it that important of a ritual that white belts must start confused knowing nothing and hurting everyone and themselves?

As a higher belt there are 3 correct ways, tap to the lower belt and accept it, if you can't get out and they are cranking correct their technique so they can feel what is right and still tap, or as a higher belt you should be able to get the fuck out of the choke.

I’m a purple belt and this just seems so odd. 1. Forsure ego if you’re not willing to take the pain from the neck crank just tap. 2. A brown belt rolling with a blue belt and being stuck in a guillotine for 4-5min??? I don’t see a scenario where that would even happen just cause of the skill gap….

If you hold a choke for more than ten seconds they are either unconscious or the choke is not on. In either case let go and start again. You are not learning anything from holding a shity choke attempt.

I will never understand people that get angry on the mats. Either from losing a roll, getting tapped, or getting injured. If something hurts, tap. It doesn't matter if he's a lower belt. If you get tapped, who cares, its practice. If you get hurt, unless its due to negligence or maliciousness, who cares. It's a physical sport, you're going to get hurt sometimes.

Once upon a time a blue belt tried to do an iminari roll on me but only managed to kick me in the face. Haha. I proceeded to SMASH him for the rest of the round. For some reason some lower belts think they can beat brown/black belts if they just try really hard or do wild sh-t. Don't be that guy. Your goal shouldn't be to beat them but to observe what the upper belt does and learn. Don't be a spaz.

@BroodYouth

IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A WIN. If you have the mindset of "wanting" to tap out upper belts because you're still a noob, that's EXACTLY the kind of shit that upper belts hate about lower belts. THERE IS NO WINNING IN TRAINING. Someone with that desire will crank subs and be FAR MORE DANGEROUS. One quick trick to make upper belts hate you is muscling subs on them. If you are not tapping out a higher belt with smooth technique, who cares? Upper belts are usually older and usually full of injuries - don't be the guy that makes them miss mat time.
@Thecelestial1
@Thecelestial1 День назад
@@BroodYouth that is bullshit. Being able to tap higher belts or anyone IS a good and competitive mindset especially if it’s growth minded. Wtf are you learning submissions for if not to tap people out?
@todd2324
@todd2324 День назад
@Thecelestial1 I think what Brood is referring to is the mentality. Training is training, and it should never be about "winning" in terms of tapping out upper belts. That kind of thinking can lead to injuries and cranking subs unnecessarily. I've never viewed tapping out upper belts as a "win" because it's just training. Save that kind of mindset for competitions.
@Thecelestial1
@Thecelestial1 День назад
@@todd2324 Yes but wanting to hunt for subs and feeling happy about finally tapping out a higher belt doesn't immediately equal a bruiser who uses no technique or skill just to get taps. His kind of training is ultimately useless, and you're subs will never get better without actually trying to get them.
@todd2324
@todd2324 День назад
@@Thecelestial1 But what I was referring to was your word choice of it being a "huge win" to tap a higher belt. It's fine to feel happy if it happens, but it's the wrong way of thinking to call it a win when it's not a competition, it's just training.

It just seems like Jiu Jitsu has become so pussified nowadays. Back when I first started training in the mid 2000s, the can opener was a very common way to open up the closed guard, but now if someone tried it, I can only imagine how much folks would be crying about their neck. If the brown belt was in that much discomfort, he should've just tapped rather than chewing the guy out after the fact.
@bunklypeppz
@bunklypeppz 18 часов назад
Acting like trying to avoid injuring your sparring partners is "pussification" is seriously goofy. There's nothing impressive or tough about using techniques/tactics that are likely to result in long term, chronic spinal issues; it's just inconsiderate behavior and it's the reason why many people who train eventually have to quit against their own will, because their body is too damaged to continue training.
