There's a great 12 part series on the Bike World RU-vid channel covering exactly this issue. Full strip down and rebuild. Really detailed about everything involved with cause of problem through to solution.

A gentleman here did a rebuild of an 1199r with the same problem. Amongst other things, I believe there was an issue with a plastic oil pump part, or similar, which had broken down due to a bad crash repair. These old ducati high performance motors can get sensitive

Ok. So I've been wayching the excellent Bike World D16RR recommissioning series. The end of part 5 is where they find the cylinderhead corrosion and it gets interesting like the Iconic Desmo. It's explained that old uncycled blue coolant deteriorates. Separates. Breaks down. The water element eats the metal. Freezes and causes typical ice damage. So if it's a Duc from a cold climate, that's a worry and if it's from a warmer state it's only corrosion. Lol 'only'. So it's not like the blue coolant is alien blood to magnesium! It's just not stable for years. Pink is best. But routine flushes and coolant replacement is key for a long term garage queen. Sounds like head gasket sets are tricky to obtain. Good luck Adam

My 1098R has been for sale for several months and everyone wants one with very low miles (mine has 12k, fully serviced and runs like new. The perfect "rider") I should send anyone trying to lowball due to mileage this video ;)

Honda uses a blue coolant for their bikes (50/50 premix). Is that 'bad,' too? 😮

Nope. It's only magnesium alloys that are affected by blue. Corrosion is a soft term... it actually chemically reacts and dissolves the magnesium! Pink coolant is the right stuff for this application. Either colour is fine in a Honda unless it's a HRC or RC model that has trick race parts installed.

Thank you. I actually ride a Yamaha 600 Thundercat, but the closest dealer only had blue coolant. I fully flushed the green before going blue, however...
