I love blue jays, too! One summer, with a light rain coming down, I observed blue jay parents teaching their young how to shake off the raindrops so they wouldn’t get water-logged. That’s a pretty important skill, especially if a quick get-away from a predator is needed. Jays are so smart and I just love their sassy attitude!

I rescued a baby blue jay when she fell from a nest and was being attacked by other birds. Despite being left with one eye, she had about 15 great years with us as one of the family. So much of this is familiar and then some. And she was still able to catch thrown food quite well. Cheers, Leslie!

@nikolasjames6217
@nikolasjames6217 3 года назад
@@patrickywong1286 She imprinted on us, because she was so young when we got her, and we did not want other birds to pick at her injury, so we had a large cage that we could move inside or out. When the cage was inside we would leave the door open so she could come out and visit us, and fly laps around the living room. She somehow felt our disappointment when she had a bathroom accident, and became paper trained herself. Later in life we would take her outside on our hands. Lots of attention--she was basically like a sibling. I don't know if any of this helps; It may be good to speak to a bird behavior specialist.

We have Western scrub jays (lower elevations) and Steller's jays (higher elevations) and I was taught to hate them because of their predatory natures. The same people who hate jays for predatory behavior respect and admire birds of prey for the same behaviors. I sense a double standard.

I love my blue jays. One in particular really had me thinking that one of my resident red-shouldered hawks was very close by. I finally caught him at it, and now I've learned to distinguish between him and the real hawks, But a few weeks ago, he switched to the call of a red-tailed hawk, which also lives nearby! Keeps me on my toes!

@@nancyfahey7518 wow I've never heard of cussing being in the mockingbird's repertoire. Thank you for your videos, Lesley! Blue Jays hold a special place in my heart! Walking home from the last day of 3rd Grade many years ago, I found a tiny fledgling at the base of a large tree. Being crazy about animals, I picked him up and loved him for the next 18 years! That tiny bird grew strong and blue and sassy on cottage cheese, sunflower seeds, small bugs and even mashed potato! What a wonderful pet T-Bird was.. going to countless "Show and Tell" and Vacation Bible School sessions. He refused to leave even tho he was given many chances to do so.. He loved his big, tall house with his own little bathtub on the top level. He'd often mimic the telephone to bring us all running, and would actually ride on the back of one of our pups. Bff's!! Here was such an amazing little friend!!

We have scrub jays here in central California. Many people say they are pests, and most, like me for most of my life, ignore them. Now I enjoy watching and learning about them. My neighbor has a bird bath on the other side of her patio wall. If the water is stale or (gasp) missing, one jay will perch on the wall and cry out his outrage like only jays can. When she steps out, he flies away. As soon as the bath is prepared and she's retreated inside, he's back to enjoy his bath.

Blue Jay feathers have always reminded me of stained glass also. I am from Connecticut and we have bluebirds. I didn't realize they didn't nest that far north. As my fave color is blue I have always loved watching blue jays. This is my bluesy story and it is a sad one. I now live in Florida and I have 2 cats. For the first 10 years I lived here I always had blue jays around my little back garden. Their favorite thing to do was to torment my cats. Between the Jays and the mockingbird my cats were always getting bonked by bird beaks. One day I came home and found the body of a juvenile Jay in my dining room. I never saw another blue Jay in my back yard again. The mockingbird still call for me to let out my cats but the Jays decided the cake wasn't worth the candle. Thank you Leslie for your wonderful films and stories. I just discovered your site about a year ago and truly enjoy it. Ignore the Haters.

Had to get the bird special formula that I fed with a special dropper. We took it to a wildlife rehabilitation place and my job was keeping him alive on the long ride. Had to feed him every minute or so. What was awesome is when he came back the following spring to visit; they told out birds and jays will tend to do that a lot. I recall opening the front door to my deck and there he was just perched at the top rail, no food was out there or anything. He didn’t fly away and seemed quite content. Love that memory. I name my blue jays too! They’ll look in my window now and squeak at me for food. So you’re not crazy, less I’m crazy too but who cares?😂❤️

I have never thought of putting whole peanuts in the shell to "get close" to blue jays. Thank you.

Great video! I too love blue jays. There is a family of five that visit me often. They are so intelligent and entertaining. If they see me in my upstairs windows they perch on the tree branches near by and call, to let me know they would like some peanuts.... do you ever have titmice beg and pick up peanuts? I have several that compete for peanuts with my Jays. They are so cute too

I live in an inner city and started feeding the squirrels peanuts in the shell. next I knew the jays arrived. there were only two would come around. One was all battered with a broken feather and cyst like thing on his back. He's all better since I started feeding him/her and now there are five. So bossy the one is with the err err loud call. I do admit they have me trained to put peanuts out for them when they call. I swear they circle the house looking in the windows for me like come on lady we're hungry. The other day a cardinal came up to grab some food and guess who was the boss chased him away. I also noticed the blue jays poking around in the squirrels nest looking for food. I too have witnessed them mimicking crow calls. So smart they are. Thank you so much for your videos

LesleytheBirdNerd If you recognize the individual calls that Blue and Sweetgirl use for each other, Then you're only crazy to think they don't know your individual calls for them! You can bet they have a 'name' for you, and probably one for peanuts too. All animals are much smarter than most folks can imagine, and some are brilliant! Thanks for your wonderful videos. We love them. I share them on facebook often and my daughter tho miles away seems so much closer when she comments on the wonder and joy that they are too her as well. You are Blessed and you are a Blessing. Thank You

The jays in my area perfectly mimic the calls of red-tailed hawks. A few times I've been fooled by them. I love when they sneak in after a squirrel has buried an acorn and steal it. Watching them rebury said acorn, in which they always cover it with something like a leaf in order to mark the spot, is so fascinating. Since watching your videos, I've started putting out peanuts for the two jay pairs that visit my feeders. They really do favor them over the sunflower seeds.

Of course I love my beloved Cardinals (I live in Illinois, USA), but I have a new fondness for the BlueJay who only in the last year found my home. I recently got a nut ring to keep attracting them and so far I have three. A pair, and a single. I love watching them and love their loud call. They are big and beautiful birds and I hope they stay.

Blue Jays are bossy too. If I am out of peanuts or sunflower seeds they sit on the garden fence turn to me and look at me in the living room and protest. They also did not like it when I cut up a orange and put in the feeder that their stuff should be, they come back to the fence and yell at me through the window. I love them!

I have four blue jays in my yard, but mine are very shy and won't come near when I go to fill my feeders. One of them does the call of a broad-winged hawk. I love the way they hop on the ground!

I agree! Blue Jay's are awesome and entertaining. We have about two dozen in our area and they frequent the feeding stations and oak trees. You have invested quite a bit of time to form a good relationship with your jays. I wish I could but if I stood around working with them, the neighbors might get suspicious of my bizarre behavior. At least you don't have anyone around and you can recognize them which is very cool. We have Eastern Bluebirds here but they aren't that boisterous like the jays. Happy Birding Lesley!

I love the jays too Lesley! One of the ones that comes to my cherry tree in the backyard, I call "Spock" because of his eye markings. I'm still just learning about my birds and I've learned a lot from you! I learned today about the jays catching peanuts ( I give mine peanuts but didn't know that if I tossed them they would catch!) and about them imitating other sounds...how cool is that?! Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos! 🕊💕

I love your videos Lesley. Blue Jays are the clowns of the bird world, at least the scrub jays we have down here in Southern California. Your not crazy except crazy for jays! I have a jay that I've named "baby". I'm not sure if it's a male or female, but it lands on my balcony railing in the morning for blueberries and peanuts. Jay's are smart, beautiful, and make this world just a feathers length more special!

Jay’s are so cool, I fell in love with them when I rescued 3 fledglings , made a nest and watched and sometimes ducked when mom and dad fed them, they survived and flew the coup but more keep coming back and I make sure there’s plenty of food for them

I love the colors of the Blue Jay and they really are smart birds! Every day, one sits on the edge of my eavestrough, patiently waiting for me to throw a peanut on the lawn for him. Now I will have to throw one up in the air to see if he can catch it!

I had the unexpected & wonderful pleasure of caring for a hatchling that had fallen from it's nest! I learned how amazing they are by watching my Edgar feed & finger train & spread his wings & fly off! I miss him like crazy but I feel as if he has been to visit but since he flew off before his colors & pattern truly developed I can only speculate! I am looking forward to working with my feather babies this season & hopefully can form a closer bond with them as u have! Thanks for sharing!
