In this video I show you the bass line from Blue Jeans Blues by ZZ Top. This song is in the classic Blues style and features a solid bass line from the late Dusty Hill. This is Southern Rock Blues at its finest!
This bass line is very accessible for beginner bass players but there are added layers to it which I explain more about in the video.
This bass video tutorial is suitable for absolute beginner bass players through to intermediate bassists.
• Click for my 'Bass Beginner Series'. The series cover lots of topics for beginners, with tips on bass techniques, scales, arpeggios, pentatonic scales, and learning to read music.

Love this my brother Guthrie played bass pwith Dusty Hills brother Rocky Hill as incredible blue's guitarist who really helped formed that raw ZZ Top blues edge.

63 years young, been a fan of our Houston rock-n-roll home team since ZZ’s first album. Started plucking the four strings in April (2022). Been a member of our Praise Team at church since late July. Your videos have been a great help. RIP Dusty Hill.

That's great to hear Michael and its really good that you have the Praise Team to play with other musicians. You got up and running playing bass live after 3 months of learning, well done! Bass is very accessible to start playing and then it's a matter of refining things after that.

Hi Greg...great lesson! As a beginner ~2 years, nailing this groove is important. More importantly, as a native Texan and lifelong ZZ Top & Dusty Hill fan, it is really cool that you did this lesson and THANKS for the pdf with the tabs!! To answer your question, I really try to match my playing to the drums, but I love the way you expressed the differences between the two styles. Thanks again!

Thanks so much and really glad that you dig the lesson. I've always loved ZZ Top since my friend played them to me back at a student party in the mid 90's. I remember being blown away by their sense of groove and I still am!

Top notch lesson!! Feel is such a hard concept to teach, there’s no adjectives to adequately describe the process, just sort of happens, getting in the zone, all comes together, in the moment...yep hard to describe. Love playing ZZ through the years there’s so much bass improvisation on their tracks, you can add your own flavour to Dusty”s playing. Thank you...Keep groovin’ Greg.

Great Bryn and you are on the money when you say that 'feel' is tricky to teach. Once you understand the concept, you still have to be able to play this way without dragging!

Hi Grag, thanks fro this lessen. The FEEL - last night when I was practising "17th Texas Pride (Module 5)-75" I realised I was hanging and made sure to play on point. I had the impression, that playing behind the drum was wrong. Have nice days! Greez Alf

Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell is another good slow one by ZZ Top. Buddy Whittington 's version is also fantastic.

Hi Greg thanks for another highly informative lesson. Any chance you could give a lesson on the bass solo of Mr Big by Free. As I know you’re a fan of Andy Fraser.

Why don’t you play the song Greg? I want to hear the notes with the song.
@GregsBassShed
@GregsBassShed Год назад
Hi Errol, when you use someone else’s song on RU-vid, the record companies that own it sometimes block the video. They can even choose to block it in say the US but not the UK. This is frustrating after spending time making and editing a lesson. But I have made a separate video where I just play through with the original track (minus bass). That will be published this coming week so make sure you click the notification bell and you’ll know when it’s out. This is a compromise that I’ve learnt to do. It the play-through video is banned, the lesson is still available.
