Thanks Greg. This is a game changer for our band as I’ve been trying to get this song right for years. I love Carol Kaye and really excited to have this bass line. I think someone should write a Carole Kaye musical about her life. Imagine the hit songs!

That's great ruth, I bet this will sound good on the U-Bass. My little one has commandeered mine! A think a Carol Kaye musical would be a hit! You know that she was a Jazz guitarist too and had two young kids when she started session work!

There's an excellent documentary on The Wrecking Crew and they talk a lot about Brian Wilson. In one part Carol talks about the bass line Brian wrote for Good Vibrations and says "I would have never played anything like that (bass in the intro)!" Then she plays the main part and says, "Now that's a jazz walking line - you knew that this kid was into something really great!" Brian also speaks very highly of Carol and says "she was the star of the show and the greatest bass player in the world and way ahead of her time". Really great stuff! Clips of all of this but the entire documentary is absolutely worth watching!

Thanks for that, I'll check it out. I've got the Wrecking Crew book on my pile of 'books to read'. Carol Kaye was also a jazz guitarist so she knew her Jazz.

@@GregsBassShed You're gonna love it! The one on Muscle Shoals is awesome too. Same for 20 Feet from Stardom.

I've got a signed copy of her autobiography. Fascinating read and the studio/session logs are staggering. She's quite active on Facebook too and always dropping nuggets of bass wisdom and interesting stories/anecdotes. She's a true legend.

Carol Kaye,,,there’s only one word to describe this incredible bassist. “Outstanding” And another for this video. “Brilliant”” I play a lot of RnB, Soul and Motown classics and Carol Kaye’s bass lines pop up quite a lot. I’ve played for sometime now with foam under the strings at the bridge on the P bass, however, I’m thinking of buying a bridge cover and jamming the foam in to sit on top of the strings. Don’t know if it will make a difference to the sound, so anyone out there has this setup I’ll be keen to hear of your experience. Thanks Greg for a great lesson. Keep Groovin Bryn

Cheers Bryn, a lesson on Carol Kaye was far overdue. Like a lot of sessions players who are out of the limelight, lots of people just don't know of her. Hopefully sometime can answer your question about foam under a bridge cover. My video coming out on Monday is of me playing with the original track with foam under my strings by the bridge and using a pick, which is more unusual for me! Hope you like it!

Thanks for this. I do it on solo guitar. Didn't know it was trad. Coincidentally I'd left my song book at venue as I'd decided to focus on bass this weekend so your transcription is timely as is the lesson as I'd not played it on bass. Your counting of bars has cleared up mistakes I was making using UG chord sheet. AND you may have tempted me to buy a 5 string!

Glad it helped Gareth. it's such a great song! Sorry that you now have to acquire another bass!!

Glad you liked it Travis. Try a pick, it's good fun although I definitely prefer finger-style. I use a pick on the play-though video I made for this bass line. That's out on the channel on Monday.

Greg, I believe Ron Carter is the most recorded bassist of all time. I watched a 2 hour documentary about him, and that's what they said. Cheers
