Blue Monday on Vintage Casio Instruments

I thought it would be a fun challenge to do a cover version of New Order’s Blue Monday using only vintage consumer-grade Casio instruments. This is an edited and compressed adaptation. I left out some sections of the song and combined a few things to make a shortened rendition.
What you see me playing in the video are the actual instruments I used to make this multi-track recording. I layered different keyboards for most parts. I didn’t do anything to significantly change the sound of the instruments. I only used basic effects, such as equalization, reverb, delay, chorus, compression, etc.
I programmed the main drums using the built in rhythm programmer of the HT-700 keyboard and supplemented them by playing along on the DP-1 drum pads connected to the MT-500 keyboard. I used the SS-1 drum sticks to strike the pads, but you can also connect these sticks directly to the MT-500 and trigger drum sounds by striking anything or even waving the sticks in the air.
New Order sampled the Kraftwerk song “Uranium” for the choir-like sound in the original song. I also sampled ”Uranium” with the SK-1 keyboard. This is the only thing I sampled.
Here is a list of the instruments I used (in order of their first appearance):
HT-700 keyboard
MT-500 keyboard, DP-1 drum pads, SS-1 drum sticks
VL-1 mini keyboard/calculator
MT-400V keyboard
Casiotone 1000P keyboard
DG-20 digital guitar
SK-1 sampling keyboard
PT-7 mini keyboard and Casiotone M-10 keyboard
DH-200 digital horn
Casiotone 201 and MT-40 keyboards
MT-65 keyboard
KX-101 and CK-500 keyboards/cassette players
Casiotone 701 keyboard
MT-35 keyboard
MT-52 keyboard
It would mean a lot to me if you showed support by watching my original music videos here on RU-vid or stream/download my original music on the service or retailer of your choice.

This is not intended to be an exact note-for-note recreation. It’s probably not perfect, but I don’t think New Order would be too bothered if I got something wrong here and there. Check the description if you are interested in the equipment and process I used to make this rendition. Please also check out my original music. Thanks for watching!

@@mikeciul8599 I used to have the VL-1. I gave it to a kid friend. This little thing introduced me to the world of synthesizers, and composition. Its specifications were amazing for the time , at such price. I still have a CT-310. In the Video, I believe the sound is fed to a mixer, from the instruments line out / phone jack. The recording sounds clean, without any room noise. To me, what you here are the synthetic sounds those electronic instruments delivered. You plug those machines to a delay, a reverb, flanger... and you have fantastic sounds. By the way even the most expensive synthesizers are used this way nowdays.

@PolaroidsofthePyramids
@PolaroidsofthePyramids 3 месяца назад
Full disclosure - the main bass in the song is actually a combination of the 1000p, the HT-700 and the MT-400V. That being said, the 1000p is what provides the bottom end fundamental "bassiest" part of the sound. I used the HT-700 to add a more traditional synth bass mid-range component and the MT-400V to provide a more aggressive pulse wave component. To your point though, without the 1000p the bass would sound a lot thinner as bass sounds aren't one of the strengths of most Casios. But, the keyboards of their sine wave era can pack a punch in the low end, especially the 1000p with it's synthesis capabilities. Thanks for the comment!

0:12 I was roommates in the 80s with a friend that could play ANY song on that white Casio "instrument" (Casio VL-Tone VL-1) While he was just chilling on the couch he'd start playing Duran Duran's Rio, or Van Halen's Jump. He loved the Beatles. He could play all of their songs on that thing from ear. It was incredible. Strangely, while most songs sounded bland on that thing, Strawberry Fields sounded great. He should have been a musician, but he liked working on cars at his uncle's dealership more. Oh, well.

Casio overload - and surprisingly close. New Order wasn't using especially advanced synths anyway, but it's interesting to hear this so close. Also interesting that you have so many Casio's. I'll try to not read anything into that. :-) From one "Bad Gear" to another, well done!

That was really good!!! It brought back a memory of a $200 Casio keyboard my parents bought for me in 1987. It may have been that SK-1, as I recall being able to speak into it, to take voice samples. Had I not watched this video, I may have never remembered. Great Video!
