For some reason, I don't remember that review, haha! I remember a bunch of the old reviews, though. Definitely same as it ever was. Good to see you around, DJ. I hope, at some point, I see some more reviews down the line. Miss ya, buddy! Cheers!
I haven’t had Blue Moon in a LONG time, but from my memory this is a fair score. It’s solid for what it is but also isn’t fully committing to being a witbier. I also agree that Hoegaarden is a way better example of the style for something readily available. Doesn’t hold a candle to Allagash White as you said. Fun fact that quite a while ago the original owner of Blue Moon left to start a non-alcoholic THC infused beer, though I forget the name.
That's the way I look at it, Curtis. This is a decent example of the style, but leans too much into the orange peel character. It's fine for what it is, but there are a ton of other Witbiers that I would prefer over this. Just not something I'd ever buy again, unless I was at a restaurant or bar that had a horrible beer selection. Didn't know the original owner left, but I could totally see it. Cheers, buddy!
Blue Moon is every 35-43 year olds dudes fancy beer from college. First craft ish beer I remember drinking besides Guinness too. It’s good for what it is. It’s usually the non macro light beer option found at most Midwestern small town bars.I wish we got Allagash White here as I have never tried that beer. Cheers 🍻!
LMAO, you ain't wrong, Dan! It's a shame you never had Allagash White because I find that it blows this one out of the water. Probably my favorite within the style from an American brewery. Cheers, buddy!
Looks like Allagash White gets distribution in Wisconsin. Will look for it next time I am across the river. One thing I will say with Blue Moon is it might be the gateway beer of the haze craze. It was the first hazy, citrusy , approachable beer many of us drank. The hazy ipa was the next logical step. Would Hazy IPA exsist without Blue Moon? Just a thought. 🍻
Good question, haha! It's funny because those Belgian Wits and German Hefeweizens are the originators of the hazy beers appearance-wise. It's wild how much current Hazy IPAs look like those styles. I hope you try out Allagash White. I also hope it's quite fresh. That beer is money. Love it. If I didn't review beer, and like trying a bunch of different offerings, that'd be a beer I pick up quite often to just have in the fridge. So damn good!
Noice! I can see how many folks enjoy it. For me, if I'm going to buy this style, Allagash White and Ommegang Witte are what I'm searching for. That said, it's solid for what it is. I can't wait to post the non-alcoholic version because that one was wild! Cheers!
People like to shit on Blue Moon, but if we're being honest, it was many folks first beer outside of the macro lager world. Its been forever since I've had this, so maybe I'll revisit it. THROW AN ORANGE IN THERE SON!
Totally agree, Joe. It was mine, and while I didn't like it initially, I've come to appreciate it to some degree. Much better beers within the style, but for a gateway beer, it's pretty damn decent. It's funny, in the review I kept saying I tried it with and without an orange peel, and I meant orange slice. I didn't care for it with an orange slice only because this beer is so orange-forward without it, so it kind of overpowered everything. I'd love to see you revisit it, dude. Buy one of those stovepipe cans and take it down, SONS! Cheers, buddy!
Had this on draft a couple weeks ago for the first time in a long time, and thought it was quite decent. I'd rate it similar, at around a 3.6, 3.7. But like you said, there's others out there that are much better. Cheers buddy.
No doubt, man. Not bad, I'd happily drink it if offered, but it's one of those beers where I don't think I'd ever intentionally purchase it anymore unless I was at a bar/restaurant that had a horrible beer list. Cheers, dude!
Yeah, I'm sure this would be a good one for parties. I don't bring beer to party as much anymore because I'd get fun of for drinking "fancy," beer, but this probably approachable to many beer drinkers. I haven't had Shock Top in a while. Might have to review it soon, haha! Cheers, Chase!
Wow I remember when I was working and this came on tap holy shit did it sell, then I had the great idea of making a beermosa because we sold out of champagne 🍾 to make Mamosas cheers 🍻
Look at that creativity, Billy! I could see this shocking a lot of folks back in the mid-to-late 90s when this was released. Nowadays, I'd much rather have an Allagash White or Ommegang Witte. Not a bad beer, IMO, but so many better beers within the style. Cheers, brother!
I appreciate your unbiased fairness Joe but this beer has to meet a few criteria to pass my lips ever again. 1.Needs to be free and the last one in the cooler. 2. The alternative has to be Bud light or some similarly horrible beer. 3. Craft beer is like music. You have to respect everyone's opinions. But with what's available there isn't any reason to spend money on this😂
LOL! I hear ya, man. I would still prefer this over many macro beers. In a pinch, I think it satiates my want for a Belgian-style Witbier, but at the same time, there are so many others out there that I prefer, that I probably wouldn't purposely buy this one again unless I went to a place that had a horrible beer selection. Cheers, David!
The reason I dont like this one is because to me it doesnt taste like a authentic witbier and it tastes like its own thing. I miss the Blue Moon seasonal variety packs they used to have that had new flavors in them. They went away at some point. As far as price point goes, there are no "cheap" beers in this style on the market that I know of. Even Hoegaarden is priced similar to Blue Moon.
I think it does a decent job replicating the style, but I think it leans a bit too heavily on that orange character. I feel like most authentic Belgian Witbiers have a beautiful balance between all the ingredients, with the yeast providing a bunch of flavor notes. I didn't mention bubblegum or banana or anything yeast related because I really didn't get any. As for cheap beers, depends on what you mean. I don't think $20 for 15 beers is a bad price point. My favorite, Allagash White, is around $18/12 pack. I'd happily pay that all day long because I feel it's a superior beer. Regardless, this is OK, but I'd rather have so many others within the style, like the aforementioned Allagash White and the beer you mentioned, Hoegaarden. Cheers, man!
I also forgot to mention, Chaz, that I agree about you in terms of the seasonal variety packs. I remember they had one in their Winter seasonal variety pack that was really good ... well, at least for Blue Moon. I think it was like Blue Moon Winter Ale or something. It had some brown sugar notes. Fun beer, for sure.
@@averagejoe716 They catalogue all their old beers on their website which is cool. Even the rarer ones that were only in bombers. Nowadays they only sell the Belgian White, Light Sky, Mango Wheat, and Moon Haze with the Blue Moon name on it. They must have had a reason for scaling back their products.
Ah, that's cool! Never checked the website outside of looking for the IBUs of Blue Moon. I'll have to check it out. Sucks that they've cut back, though.
I can see that, Stoney. I know a few people with the same opinion. On the flipside, I know people who LOVE this beer. As always, beer is subjective, so it is what it is. I used to hate it, too. Cheers, dude!
