Interesting! So I’ve had this beer once 2 years ago and of course remember liking it quite a bit. The Weldwerks Maibock I’ve had two cans of and on tap within the last 2-3 months so I’m more familiar with it. Certainly very different beers even being within the same style. Something I already had in my mind with OEC that you’ve kind of confirmed here is that because they cool ship all their stuff, WHEN you actually drink it is a big deal. Probably a year ago I grabbed a 4 pack of their Cool ship Lager that was just on the shelf at the beer store. I was so excited to get some of their stuff and because it was a lager I didn’t even bother to check the date. I checked it later and it was over a year old. When I cracked it open the beer had a super thick meringue-like head and a definite barnyard character. Not to like an Orval level but definitely prominent. Point being that because these are cool shipped you’re naturally getting some wild yeast in the wort which over time will likely start presenting itself. I can’t remember how fresh mine was when I had it but I don’t recall an obvious funk note. This is one I’d definitely like to try again. Maibocks as a whole, now that you mention I couldn’t even think of German examples that would be a staple of the style off the top of my head where most other German styles I could. I checked the BJCP and the only one familiar to me is Ayinger’s and the rest I haven’t had or even heard of. It’s just not a style you see a ton of which is kind of wild because it’s pretty tasty.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 15 часов назад
Yeah, the coolship/open fermentation definitely put a unique spin on this one. It's a good, but not great beer to my palate. There are certain styles where I'm used to a specific taste profile, and this was a bit "off." Not in a bad way, but in a way where my palate struggled to understand what I was tasting. I really enjoy their beer because they're all coolshipped, but depending on age -- and how the beer is handled at the stores -- they can definitely turn into something so much different than expected. I could totally see how you would love this one, as I could tell the base beer was well-brewed. Just thought the WeldWerks offering was executed better considering the style. I will say that there's not a ton of German examples, but Ayinger and Hofbrau come to mind. The former I reviewed, but haven't seen bottles of the latter in quite a while. Definitely one of those rarer styles, especially in America. Like you said, it's crazy it's not a more popular style. Well-made ones are delicious! Cheers, Curtis!

It says right on their website they self distribute in CT and RI but it only lists the places that have it in CT but not RI. Thats a bit weird. I looked at their lineup and its not hop forward/IPA heavy so I like that. Their beers look very enticing and would probably pick some up if I saw them. Some unique styles I havent seen before like a smoked Amber Lager and smoked Golden Lager. I only thought dark beers like porters and stouts were smoked. Shows how much I know lol.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 15 часов назад
They brewed a lot of "old world" styles, and certainly quite a few smoked beers. They're also known as the brewery who brings over tankers of beer from Aecht Schlenkerla and cans them on-site. If you ever see cans of Schlenkerla, it's from them. They do great things. This was good, but not great. I think the coolship and open fermentation put a different spin on it that I didn't necessarily love. Still enjoyable, though. If you see any of their stuff in the future, give 'em a go. Fun brewery, for sure. Cheers, Chaz!

According to their beer finder this is at a store in my area but its at a place I never go to so thats probably why I havent seen it. Can't say I'll be heading to that store to see if its indeed there. Most of the stores in my area that showed up have the Old Rasputin and a couple have the Red Seal Ale according to the beer finder. None say they have all 3 or even 2 of the 3. Kinda strange I think but it makes sense.

No reviews for the Cool Little Thing IPA 7.5% Cryo Fresh Hazy IPA, and it is a great one. It is 7 weeks old and i am impressed, not lack luster. Its got a nice creamy/oily/soapy mouthfeel. If you see it pick it up. You really missed out, with Atomic Torpedo 8.2%...it was so oily, great mouthfeel, my favorite West Coaster, from them. The 9.2 Atomic Torpedo is fine, but not as cool as the 8.2. I had a problem with Cosmic Little Thing, thought it was boozy, but plan to revisit it, when i see it fresh, and i hear it is an all year round product...Cheeers!!!

Just got 6 of these at whole foods for the same price as pliny which is 6.99. Pliny has been my top beer for years now. After having over 12 of these so far this year ... this one slightly tops pliny for me. I thought the 2020 version wasnt as good as this or regular pliny.

That is awesome! Yeah, if I could get this for the same price as Pliny, it'd also get the edge for me, too. Nerd alert incoming 🤓: This has got to be a reference to Crosby which is one of the better hop farms in the U.S. I’ve heard a lot of big time brewers rave about how good their product is on some podcasts. I would assume all of the hops in the beer came from Crosby Also if you ever see CGX listed in the beer info, that’s Crosby’s version of Cryo. I haven’t had a ton of experience with Idaho 7 by itself but last summer I did have a single hopped Idaho 7 lager from homes that I liked quite a bit so I’d say I’m a fan of currently. Anyways this sounded like a cool beer and I usually dig when breweries go out in a limb and exclude those “banger” hops to see how it turns out.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 3 дня назад
Oh, 100%. I think I mentioned in the review about the label perhaps being a picture/portrait of the Crosby hop farm, but I didn't mention much else about it. All the hops are definitely from their hop farm, and I knew about the CGX thing, although Mortalis didn't specify if any of the hops were CGX. Without question, man. I love me some Idaho 7 when it's done well. Not much pineapple to speak about in this one, but I think the weird hop bill worked extremely well. I'm falling in love with Vista, and even though I didn't get that distinct pear note in the taste, this beer was awesome! Love when breweries go outside the box with a hop combination like this. Makes for a fun drinking experience! I think you'd dig this one, brother! Cheers, Curtis!

It is hard to rate a beer when its old. It sounds like a decent beer when it is fresh.
@averagejoe716
@averagejoe716 3 дня назад
True, but it wasn't that old. I've had IPA/DIPAs that were four or five months old that held up, so I don't think it would've been much better fresh. Plus, it had a "best by" date of 08/07/24, so according to the brewery, it still had some time. Just think it was a beer that wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. Bummer that this one was just ok. On that same trip to Savannah where I mentioned Two Tides I also had Tropicali from Creature Comforts which is their flagship West Coast IPA (6.6%) and I enjoyed that beer. I checked Untappd and I gave it a 4 but from my memory it would be more like a 4.15. When you were unboxing I was really hoping Wes sent a hazy IPA or two from Two Tides because those were superb, but I also had a fruited sour which was very good (a style I normally don’t care for unless it’s Belgian style) and a pilsner that was really good as well, so they just make good beer all around.

Tropicalia, right? That was the name of the beer that I forgot. Whenever I'd hear about Creature Comforts, that was the beer folks mentioned. I hope I get the chance to try it someday. As for the Two Tides beers, he sent me a DIPA last year called 100 Classic Comfort Meals. Mouthfeel was lacking a bit, but it was fantastic overall. Really dug it. @averagejoe716 5 дней назад
Thanks, John! Appreciate the kinds words. As for what a "shelfie" beer is ... it's all up for debate, but the way I view it is a beer that is easily accessible from a bigger regional/national/international brewery. Basically, anything that you can grab at your favorite beer store or even grocery store without the need to wait in line or hope it doesn't sell out instantly. Nothing that is brewery-only. I know that a lot of beer qualifies as a "shelfie" nowadays, so the definition is open for interpretation. This beer tasted akin to a Hazy IPA you'd get from the Sierra Nevada, Victory, Sixpoint and Great Lakes of the world, just to name a few. Hope this helps! Cheers, man!

I agree it's a little too carbonated for the style, I wish it was more in that creamy hazy realm. Tropicalia is their other big flagship IPA that's in that world of Jai Alia and Two Hearted Ale. Maybe I'll send that one next time. 😅

TROPICALIA! That was the name of the beer that was escaping me in the review. That's the beer I heard a lot about when it comes to Creature Comforts. Would totally be awesome to try it out! Yeah, I think the carbonation is what brings this one down because the flavors are there. Just a bit thin with too much carbonation. Still not bad, and for the price point, it's hard to beat. Appreciate you throwing this one in the beer mail. It was fun to try, buddy! Thanks, again! Cheers, Wes!

@@averagejoe716 It's all good, thanks for giving it a go! I should have sent a can of Tropicalia in this box instead of two cans of Bigger Dreams. Always next time!

Dude, I appreciate your generosity and another can of this won't go to waste at all. I'll share it with some friends in the next week or two. I'm sure they'll enjoy it. As I just told Curtis in the other comment, I'm just humbled by your guys' generosity. Without your kindness, I don't get a chance to try Creature Comforts, Two Tides, etc. So damn cool, and I can't thank you enough!

ok, so I lived in GA a bit and Creature Comforrts made what I considered the first legit hazy in GA and it was called Crescendo. I kicked that keg then went to another place the next day to put that keg down. It was awesome. Like on Other Half level..... so they released the beer again a few months later and it tasted like the 1st batch but sat around for a few months. This beer was opaque AF.... they made it again and I think this was the real second batch plus and it was shit. Not the same beer... it was semi transparent like the one you are drinking now... I even looked at my untapped pic vs the pics now. I don't get it...I think they kept the same brewer....they didn't size up. They had a legit great hazy then shit all over it. I don't understand it.

Damn, that's a wild story. I haven't heard much about Creature Comforts outside of what a few friends in the South told me before, and I was always hoping to try their stuff, so I'm pumped I'm able to. That said, I wish this beer was like the OG of Crescendo. Would've definitely been in my wheelhouse. I do want to try Tropicalia just to say that I've done so, haha! Cheers, man!

Nostalgia kicks in for beers like AB and this. Just brings me back to simpler times in the craft days. Thanks, Joe! Just watched your "Road Sodas" video, and loved it. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the everywhere beers I've had, and it looks like a fun place. Cheers, brother!

comparing zero H to real H is like comparing protected sex to unprotected sex. For most people is there a point to comparing the two "beers" since the later option isn't an option (for health reasons)

No doubt! I think it's fun to do for a video, but most of the NA beers don't compare to the regulars. Nothing wrong with that, and your analogy is hilarious (but accurate). I do think this does a decent job at reproducing Heineken without alcohol, though. Same with Guinness. Cheers!

I can not remember the last time I have seen a Maibock. 75 finger head 🤣 High alcohol beers that are well done and hide the alcohol well are dangerous. This sounds great and is a nice gift beer. Always great to end on a high note!

LOL! Yeah, it's not a style a lot of breweries kick out, so it's always cool. Definitely a scary drinkable beer. Cheers, man!

Hey Joe! Glad everything got there safe with the heat. Excited to see what you think about all of the brew dogs. Sorry about the mix of where the date tape was on the cans and bubble wrap. I packed it pretty late one night 😂 I just grabbed the can release dates from the brewery's Instagram posts. I had another can of Nothing But Noise that had some similar stuff going on around the top so it was just from canning hopefully. Cheers! 🍻

Dude, no worries on the packaging. I'm an idiot, so I typically miss stuff when cracking them open, haha! Such a cool selection of beer! I've already reviewed the Creature Comforts beer and that West Coast Pilsner. The former will be posted tomorrow, with the latter being posted on Thursday. I can't wait to dive into the rest. Should be a good time! Thanks again for everything, buddy! Cheers!
