I agree! These Blue Note releases are fantastic. I have been buying and enjoying them all. I have even been seeking out 80th anniversary releases and they are wonderful.
Back in the late '70's I proved what a huge jazz nerd I was by answering all the jazz trivia questions asked by the DJ emceeing the show. One question was about the names of the Jones' brothers. Went home with a stack of free promo copies of jazz records. Wish I still had them.
@@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL what the hell did they feed those kids? Elvin certainly one of the best drummers ever, Hank is one of the most elegant pianist's, and Thad with the arranging and composing. Just amazing. I haven't owned a record in many years but always check out your videos!
I could go broke with this series of records. I want them all. I have 4 of them in my collection and missing so many good ones. I like Point of Departure, Spring, Soul Station and Cool Stuttin'. I could get so many others if I did not have self control.
Hey Bob. What a great summation of the First Sixteen Blue Note Classic Series. Thank goodness for Don Was, as I'm enjoying this series, along with the Tone Poets immensely. A very slight edit, while Hank Jones, Thad Jones and Elvin Jones were indeed brothers, Sam Jones was unrelated to the three Jones boys. He merely shared the same last name as them. Great segment, as usual, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Man, the number of people I have heard complain about Midnight Blue. I listened...and did not buy. My Idle Moments arrived with a bit of an issue on Jean De Fleur , but very playable and still enjoyable. Loved this walk through Bob. Classic reissues are a no-brainer for newer 30-something jazz collectors like myself. Classic series Song For My Father is very very good. That was my most recent classic series pick up, which I am enjoying immensely. Edit: oh I forgot that my copy of Idle Moments is in fact a 75. So is my copy of Page One....which I REALLY would enjoy a BETTER copy of...
Great video on all of them! Thanks for shedding light on ones that I don’t have. I really like the ones that I got. I wish I would of got a different copy of “Cool Struttin”. The first song has some background noise, but then disappears. It’s not major, but it’s there. The others that I got are just fantastic though. It’s great to go back in time and be a fly on the wall to experience these amazing sounds. We are so lucky!
Totally agree Bob, for the money the Classic Series is a fabulous set & it’s been fun collecting them all throughout 2021… thanks for the review… can’t believe how quickly the year has gone!
Excellent video as always, those titles are truly timeless classic. Your videos always makes me go back and listen to something that I haven't heard in years. The funny thing is that today's prices it would cost $400 but if I bought those same titles in the 70's like I did it would cost me less the $100., take about inflation.
BOB! I was thinking you would be the perfect guy to run a series talking about albums by famous or non famous artists that are in your view, unjustifiably unloved or underrated. This is because you have such a vast and eclectic record collection and are jolly fine communicator. Cheers mate!

Great video as always! I have about half of them and have yet to listen to my Midnight Blue, hopefully it has minimal errors! Man, I tell ya... I don't know why that Speak No Evil and ESPECIALLY Somethin Else were next to impossible to get. Hopefully they repress them soon. My fave so far has to be The Real McCoy. I was pleasantly surprised with it!
Thanks for the recap! I was a bit late to the party, have managed to track them all down with Somethin Else the sole exception. Many of these could have easily been Tone Poet releases, but I guess these are partly aimed at bringing new listeners in(?). It's just a shame Blue Note didn't press higher quantities to save buyers getting gouged in the secondary market...
Yeah you had to be really quick on the draw, I believe Don Was just wanted to have the records in print, all analog for an affordable price. I would have certainly paid a bit more for tone poet treatment, but oh well. Until this pestilence is over with the Covid I think this is the situation we find ourselves in… thanks for watching and cheers!

I’ve got a couple, certainly not all. Just per-ordered the new 6 Pieces of Silver from UDiscover Music online. They were having a 25% off sale for Labor Day so I also ordered Idle Moments, Maiden Voyage & Ready For Freddie. They all should be shipping this Friday. Can’t wait !,
Great vid Bob. I’ve also gotten all of them. I too have had the same issues unfortunately as you. Had to exchange Burrell and Clark 3 times to get a good copy. Kind of crazy they’re dropping 4 this weekend. Tough on the wallet.
Have them all bar two that I already had good pressings of.Great series and generally great sounding.I've only had to get one replacement for bad quality but from online comments I must have been lucky. Bit worried about 4 coming out at the same time this Friday given the QC issues

Hello Bob. I do appreciate what Blue Note is doing with the Classics, but like everybody else, you can't help but compare them to all the Tone Poets and wind up wanting just a little bit more out of them. The Classics serve a great purpose where the albums are impossible to get originals/ early pressings (Soul Station, Cool Struttin). Also, they are useful to own on some of the softer/ quieter recordings (Herbie Hancock Maiden Voyage) where the slight pops and crackles on your older pressings stand out a little more. Still, I tend to think that Blue Note is missing an opportunity to provide these heavy hitting titles in a Tone Poet/ Music Matters presentation as an additional option. Given the current after market prices of the Music Matters pressings, I'd pay double the price of a Classic series title with a Tone Poet quality treatment. All of my Tone Poets will be permanent staples in my collection.
Hey Bob, have you ever listened to the album "Cat" by Hiroshi Suzuki? Since you're clearly a jazz fan I think you'll dig this record. I just picked up the "We Release Jazz" 2021 reissue. I saw it at my local shop, it looked interesting so I went home to do some research. I'll tell ya man, it hits to sweet spot between fusion and funk. It's a great listen and one helluva pressing. Sounds great. I highly recommend at least giving it a listen on "the net", if you haven't already heard it. Cheers!
My Idle Moments had non fill as-well. I could not preorder on Amazon as it was not available. Mine came from Acoustic Sounds. Ironically, my Liberty press of Midnight Blue had non fill and the classic series does not!
I've been getting them all too (as well as all the Tone Poets). The Dolphy is amazing and probably my fav so far. Did you grab the Christmas album they snuck into the series? Pearson Merry Ol Soul.
Bought a copy of Idle Moments yesterday and my copy was fine bar one tiny bit of non fill. My copy of Song For My Father is crap, a bit too much non fill for my liking, but it's OOP right now.
@@BOBBRADLEYCHANNEL Even Pallas' quality control has gone off a bit. I think a busy Christmas and COVID has caused a lot of issues. The Pharoah Sanders/Floating Points album had a lot of issues and that was pressed there. And Pallas is obviously more renowned than Optimal.
Great video Bob! I bought a used copy from Amazon (cover damage) of Midnight Blue. Big gamble but it paid off. The pressing is great! Out to Lunch sounds amazing, I agree! I know the glitchy sound you are referring to but what is "non fill"?
Great video, I have a few of these and agree they sound great. I would like to know though what distinguishes the Tone Poet series from the Classic Series.
Tone poets are pressed at a different plant and have a different style jacket (much nicer) the production of the tone poet are overseen by joe Harley and mastered by Kevin. Kevin is the only person on the classic series making audio decisions, hope this helps. Cheers
I think the tone poet sound a little different, I don’t know what to contribute that to, pressing plant, vinyl quality, differences in the recording they choose, joe Harley? It’s hard to quantify but they def sound good and the whole experience from the Sonics to the packaging is similar yet a bit more refined.
I ordered Idle Moments through Amazon as well. It looked like someone had tried to fold the jacket in half to fit in the mailer. Kinda comforting to see it’s an across the board bummer. Never Amazon again!
Same with my copy of “Out To Lunch.” Amazon warehouse jammed the album into the mailer and it arrived with a bent corner, so I returned that bad boy for a new copy. Amazon’s QC with their records has been horrible!

Hello Bob, I agree with someone else who said they prefer the Tone Poet series now granted the Tone Poet series didn't put out Go by Dexter Gordon, or Lee Morgan Cookin but I wish they did overall I think the Tone Poet series is much better QC wise I'm sorry I'm just not impressed with the Classic series. On a side note did you pick up Eagles Live at Forum 76, It's a fantastic-sounding album it was cut by Chris Bellman and Mastered by Bob Ludwig to masters at their craft.
Well as you know, I get as many of the tone poets as I can get my hands on. But you know joe Harley is really the driving force on the packaging and pressing plant selection. Joe also said he doesn’t have much Interest on doing titles he’s done before with music matters. So if you aren’t lucky enough to get in on MMJ the classic series is pretty much a solid option. Tone poets seems to be following the releases of the connoisseur Series which are also good. Cheers Lucille!
What do you mean it was hard to find "Speak no Evil"? You can find a whole bunch of them on Amazon or Ebay for $24.99 - $29.99...Not that hard to find.👀👀👀
