Blue Sky The Peak Patio: Fire Pit Review. I just received my order so I unbox it and set it up. You'll see I tried two different types of fires. One with the same amount of wood I would have put into my old fire pit, and one with wood pellets. The first burn would have discouraged me from buying this thing. But the second one, DAMN it was a roaring blaze! Check it out! I hope this was helpful!
This is NOT SPONSORED.
**UPDATE 12/2020: I decided to return the fire pit for two reasons. 1. When the pit is at full bore, the fire is huge, and hot, and my seating space on my deck is too small to keep everyone far enough away from it and comfortable. This is better suited for the bare ground or patio with lots of room. 2. The ash tray is annoying to remove, and while it's not something you need to do frequently, its a pain, and other smokeless pits have a easier design**. Overall this is still a good pit, and produces a huge hot fire and is smokeless when using pellets, or lots of wood.

Most people will gravitate towards getting the bigger smokeless fire pits, but the smaller ones will work for most situations due to the fact they burn so much hotter. I just ordered the Ridge from Blue Sky (one size down) and plan to only use wood pellets. Wood pellets are inexpensive relative to logs (at least purchased) and much easier to store in my opinion.

I ordered one that arrived today and gave it a good test. Here's what I found: adding pine straw, leaves, pine cones etc. to help start a fire will ensure that the thing smokes. Using logs alone there was quite a bit of smoke. Using pellets was far less smokey. The smoke seemed to disappear as the pit began to lose strength. I tossed logs in here and there adding pellets so I could examine the results. If you're using wood, it's likely to be smoke free if the wood is already well charred and may be broken up without much effort.

If you do it with wood. Make a small fire and make the floor with Amber. Then make the fire bigger. It has to be all heated in side. Then it’s smoke free

Looking forward for the next video with woods. I think it's better to put woods accumulated sideways, not in the middle so that it heats up the wall first so and then the hot air will be hot enough to make full combustion early.
@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 2 года назад
I haven't made a new video. but fire works best when wood is packed in there and around the walls so the walls heat up fast.
@BadddDoggg-id4po
@BadddDoggg-id4po Год назад
Wow, that thing kind of sucks LOL. I think it's because the holes in the bottom plate under the logs have holes that are too small, seems like it doesn't allow enough air to keep it smokeless unless it's super hot.

I just recently had a fire with pellets, but then switched to wood. it stayed mostly smokeless after the pit was good and hot and had lots of wood. The pellets are definitely cleaner and burn more consistently than wood. either way it was a very big hot fire.

The aluminum railing is powder coated, it didn’t get hot enough to ruin the paint, but as youll hear in the video, it was too close to the railing and i wanted to move it to the center of the deck.

it’s a fire pit designed for wood pellets, not sure why ur surprised that they working better than actual fire wood.

Because they said you can burn either. And i expected the wood to burn well as this is similar to a solo stove, yet the solo stove is NOT designed for pellets and it burns super well with wood. But alas, the internet is filled with comments just like this..

Have you had any issues with chipping of the paint on the inside and around the top? I did one fire and already seeing some flaking. Loved the fire. The paint issue has me concerned.
@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 3 года назад
yes, the inside is basically burnt off. the grate at the bottom is also warped slightly, but the manufacturer said this is by design to allow for heat changes in the metal and is only tack welded so it doesn't crack... even the solo stove will change color due to the heat so I guess this is just the way it is..

@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 2 года назад
solo generates a ton of heat, however if its extremely cold out and you are expecting heat around your feet or below your knees it wont happen. almost all of the heat is about top 1/4 and up.. but it radiates for 3+ feet out and prob 6ft out at full bore.

I've had a Solo Stove Bonfire for 5 months now. and im very happy with it. Its held up great, generates a great fire, and is small enough to sit on my deck. If I wanted a bigger fire, I might have kept the blue sky.. but I also got the solo on sale.. so it all worked out.

any update? hot much firewood are you putting in to get a good flame. are you ONLY using pellets? do you recommend pellets or do they burn very quickly. how long will a good fire last for in night. (do you need to constantly add more materials; more than a regular pit?) lastly...heat. i'm sure it's how right above...but how many feet away woudl you feel the fire if i had a bunch of guys over?
@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 4 года назад
pellets give it a better consistent burn. wood is hit or miss for building a smokless fire, and burn rate is different for different wood. the pit is big, so when you build a full size fire and its roaring, you can easily stand 3-4 feet away and still feel the heat, its def too hot to stand right on top of it. generates a ton of heat. but the super hot burning fire requires more fuel. so youll prob add more fuel every 30-45 min depending on how hot you want it to continue to burn. when i filled it with pellets, the whole thing was so hot when it started to die down it gave off a ton of heat even without a big flame. im having an issue with the bottom grate starting to deform and pull away from the wall, so i need to contact support. will report back again.

Spoke with the company. They said the design is made to warp with the heat of the fire and the bottom grate unit is tack welded instead of being completely sealed for this reason. It has a 3 year warranty so I’m gonna ride it out for a bit.

I have the smaller, portable version of this one. I use a combination of pellets and small wood chunks designed for smokers and chiminas. It extends the burn time as the pellets can burn very fast. Great pits for the price considering how much the solos are running.

@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 2 года назад
So i ended up returning the unit and getting a solostove when they had a sale. The biggest reason was this thing made a fire that was too big for my deck. the second reason was i felt the grate at the bottom being designed to “warp” under heat is poor design and was afraid it would have issues later on. It still made a great big fire though.

The word "smokeless" is dangerously misleading. Smoke, of course, is an umbrella term for fine particulates (aerosols) that can be inhaled, and smoke can be present even when you can't see it. Burning wood, or any solid fuel for that matter, is extremely hazardous. Wood smoke emits millions of times as much toxic pollution as cigarettes, plus burning just one hour of wood produces the equivalent of 6000 cigarette packs' worth of toxic air contaminants. The ONLY truly-smokeless fire pit is- well, there isn't any. Only electric heating is truly smokeless. Even natural gas and propane fire pits produce smoke (albeit much less of it compared to wood fire pits). If you burn wood, you harm yourself, your neighbours, local wildlife, and the climate. It's a very bad idea. Please, just don't do it unless it's an absolute emergency.
@TheSchwiz
@TheSchwiz 3 года назад
Thanks for the PSA, however wood will continue to be used as a fuel for fires for long after this conversation is over.
