My family is from Philly. My sister took a job in Tift County, southern Georgia in the 1980’s and raised her kids in Lowndes County. I enjoyed driving around there when visiting them. This is a beautiful song inspired by Dickey’s Native American girlfriend, whose last name loosely translates as “Blue Sky.” Alex and Andy should react to “Revival” by the ABB.

I totally agree with you about Blue Sky, Mark, but that is not what S-tier is for, according to A&A. S-tier is for genre-busting songs, or something like that. (Maybe "genre-busting" kinda equates with "revolutionary" or "redefines" or "opens up new frontiers.") Blue Sky *PERFECTS* its genre, it doesn't bust it. Maybe they need to have a "B-tier" for "so perfectly beautiful you could cry" -- anyway, that's how I feel about Blue Sky.
@markndogs
@markndogs 2 года назад
@@alexjbennett1017 I see your point. I guess for me it’s a song that overwhelmingly appeals to my sense of taste and that takes me to another place. "One Way Out" next. It has a little different style than what you've listened to so far. Duane kills it. It's a live recording and it's great. Allman Bros live at the Fillmore East has long been considered one of the best live albums ever. "Southbound" is a great one too that's more straight forward rocker. It gives you another flavor yet. You still have several A+ songs left. "Dreams" is a longer, lost in the sauce. "Ain't Wasting Time No More" is the best song that you haven't heard yet. "Statesboro Blues" is a classic blues. "Little Martha" is an acoustic instrumental happy little song. "Revival" is yet another great jam. And "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is more in the vein of Melissa. These are all A+.

“Loan Me A Dime” by Boz Scaggs (with Duane Allman) The next Allman brothers song to react to isn’t an Allman Brothers Band song. It’s a Boz Scaggs song featuring an amazing extended guitar solo by Duane Allman. It predates the Allman Brothers Band first album by a few months. It was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where Duane had worked as a session musician. Duane had left to form a band with his brother, but was convinced to come back for a week because of Atlantic Records’ involvement in Boz’s album. The album was ignored at the time, but is now considered a classic and is on Rolling Stone’s list of top 500 albums of all time. I discovered it in the early 80’s when I saw it listed as the #1 greatest album in a book rating the albums of the rock era.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident, he hit a Flatbed truck with crane on it Duane Allman was speeding along Hillcrest Avenue on his Harley-Davidson Sportster when he slowed to let a flatbed truck carrying a huge crane boom make a left-hand turn in front of him. Allman pulled his bike toward the center of the road so he could swing around the outside of the truck, but in the middle of its turn the flatbed suddenly rumbled to a stop. Unable to maneuver around or under the giant obstacle, Allman ran right into it. The crane’s weight ball knocked him off his Harley, which bounced up in the air and off of Allman’s chest before skidding to a stop along the curb. The guitarist was not killed instantly-in fact, he had no visible injuries except some bumps and scrapes-but died in surgery later that evening.

As gruesome as the details of his death are at least some closure is added for fans by knowledge of such details. Now give me the details of the cause of death of: Charlie Watts, Dusty Hill, Nancy Griffith and Don Everly. Apparently these things are now kept secret for some reason. Not a good idea for the survivors because with the death of a public figure not known leads to speculation, rumors, etc. Transparency? What is going on here?

The "Blue Sky" in the song is actually Dickey's girlfriend, soon to be wife, Sandy "Blue Sky" Wabegijib (whew! Had to look up that spelling!). This is truly one of the happiest, most upbeat songs I know! It ranks WAY up on my "All Time" list! The "Eat a Peach" album is fantastic from start to finish, and you really should hear it all. It's too important not to! If I had to cherry pick tracks to react to, I'd say do "Melissa" and "Little Martha" together. Both are short and wonderful! "Ain't Wasting Time No More" has exceptionally strong vocals by Greg and "One Way Out" is a fun romp about being the "back door man", with scorching slide runs by Duane. The epic instrumental "Mountain Jam" is over 18 minutes and probably too long for your situation. If you are looking for an instrumental (besides Little Martha), I'd do "Les Brers in A Minor" which features some fantastic bass work by Berry and some wonderful guitar/organ harmonies. Whether the reactions find their way onto the channel of not, you must hear this whole wonderful album! The isolated guitar tracks for Dickey, Duane, and Berry, are available on You Tube for Blue Sky. Here's Duane's ........ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0CHsk_GGUA0.html

Now I know this list isn’t amazing, but Duane and Derek are both top 20 , and Dickey and Warren are around 75-50, that really shows the instrumental mastery they had for decades and decades. Derek Trucks is one the best living guitarists, bar none

The guitar work on Fillmore East especially "Stormy Monday and Elizabeth Reed " songs becomes alive and an extension of Duane and Dickey. Beyond the sounds of the guitars there is an emotion that comes through as if in crying out in angusih. I feel like the guitars become alive.

It is completely and totally and utterly and truly impossible to stay in a bad mood after listening to this song. Having said that, what's sad is they didn't play this song live for quite some time years after Dickey and Sandy Bluesky divorced. Side note: Their daughter was named Jessica.......

This has always been a big favorite of mine from the ABB -- and I've been an ABB fan since like 1975 or so... I worked for a couple years back in my youth to be able to play both leads in this song, and to play some of the harmony licks as one (since it was possible). Man, I was so proud :-). I still remember most of the "how" but my ancient fingers are no longer nimble enough to pull it off.

That's Dickey Betts singing. Usually it's Greg. 1st silky smooth solo was Duane. 2nd solo is Dickey. Dickie was a great rock guitarist. Duane floated above playing the guitar. Before Duane got famous, he was legendary. Other famous guitarists would say, "Hey, I hear there's this cat down south, who doesn't even touch the strings with his fingers." Chet Atkins later said of Duane, " That Allman fellow has "the touch". The more you listen to Blue Sky, the purdier it gets!!
