The whole music of this original studio recording was by the Wrecking Crew in LA. Drums, Hal Blaine, Keys Larry Knechtel, Bass, Joe Osborne. The reason was that those musicians of the band were not good enough for the producers and time is money. See Wikipdia.

Music from the mid-60's to late '60's was much more "quiet" in the sense the instruments were not so heavily influence by electrical modifications of the sounds emanating from them. Fuzzier guitars and keyboards like the mellotron filled in a lot of space and made songs a bit more of a wall of sound with little or no quiet places. I don't see anybody yet commenting that during interviews having the stock question about "what were your influences?", both Anderson and Squire always mentioned The Association, along with CSY as the bands who made them include three-part harmonies in Yes' vocals. Without The Association, Yes may never developed the sound that made them immortal.

Edit: That was early in the song. Further through, I'd be more inclined to say, What the hell are these guys complaining about? He just occasionally has to say something because the music is moving him. What's wrong with that? It's not even close to being "continuous commentary". If anything, it's little bits of thinking aloud, that's all. I see a lot of comments about the running commentary, but I think he was just trying to be helpful, giving feedback about his reaction so the viewer can hear what he's hearing by hearing about it. The trouble with that is it reduces the experience down to something verbal, so interpreted. The sound hits directly in a mysterious way it's not often easy to reduce to mere words, and then for one thing the words don't match. There are things not even the great poets have the right words for, where the appropriate reaction might be something more like a slack-jawed gape, if it's amazing, or a big yawn if it's soporific. Mainly, though, the words get between you and the music. Anyway, how was he to know? He has to help out with a reaction video, and these often get wordy (because it's hard to help people just "read your mind" - or make believe they do, rather), and he gave it a good shot. Might also be a question of etiquette. It's rude to become completely absorbed in something while keeping company with friends - something like that. I agree that to a viewer the commentary can get a little annoying - a distraction from the music - but there's no need to be mean, or even to express that annoyance. I would say the way to truly get into this in the way it was intended would be to go somewhere dark and quiet, to sit there, get your mind to the state where there's no inner conversation going on (which is surprisingly easy to do, and feels surprisingly normal when it gets going), and then listen. Just hear, as far as possible. And if there are images, let them rather be the ones your own imagination makes up when reading a book than fixed constructions that get pushed into your eyes by ad agencies and film makers. "Brew yer own", rather. It's fun to do occasionally, just to have something different happen in life that you don't have to wait for someone out there to make happen for you. Next, maybe go with The Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius, and see how far you can go without visions of swans on mirror black water of a Finnish lake from before the iron age, when we shared the Earth with creatures from the other side of The Curtain. Just feel the music. (But if the visions come, well let 'em. There are no fixed rules for this.)

My mom would sing this song to herself all the time, seemingly at the most random times, and it always made me smile. We lost her to cancer in February but listening to songs she loved always makes me feel so happy and connected to her.

Incredible song and massively influential. Don’t forget though that The Beatles were playing about with feedback on ‘I feel fine’. Also in 1964. I love both bands. There was so much brilliance and creativity in the 60’s.

Maybe I don't really want to know How your garden grows 'Cause I just want to fly Lately, did you ever feel the pain In the morning rain As it soaks you to the bone? Maybe I just want to fly Want to live, I don't want to die Maybe I just want to breathe Maybe I just don't believe Maybe you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever I said, maybe I don't really want to know How your garden grows 'Cause I just want to fly Lately, did you ever feel the pain In the morning rain As it soaks you to the bone? Maybe I will never be All the things that I want to be Now is not the time to cry Now's the time to find out why I think you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever Maybe I don't really want to know How your garden grows 'Cause I just want to fly Lately, did you ever feel the pain In the morning rain As it soaks you to the bone? Maybe I just want to fly Want to live, I don't want to die Maybe I just want to breathe Maybe I just don't believe Maybe you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever Gonna live forever Gonna live forever We're gonna live forever Gonna live forever Gonna live forever We're gonna live forever
