Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I am a firm believer in the less time a crossing takes the better. With the improvements in weather forecasting and the proper captain and crew the passage will take far less time with a fin keel,. I’ve crossed on mine several times. I believe the reality is the need for a full keel heavy displacement days are the past. They do have advantages , they will come out better if grounded, are more comfortable in heavy seas but take far longer to cross and have zero chance out our running a weather system.. I will absolutely take into account your comment on this being geared towards more novice sailors and point out these things in greater deatail. I tried doing that in my most recent video and my next video is going to be going further in depth so I appreaciate the comment and the reminder to be aware that it is needed for me to go into greater detail

@@ChasingLatitudes Thanks for the reply! From my perspective you missed my point, which wasn’t at all about speed or safety, and no mono hull alive can out run a Storm moving at 30 knots! That’s not a pointing would try to impress on anyone. My point is about comfort and safety neither of which a Beneteau has. To me voyaging is not about your turn of speed it’s about comfort and safety, and while one doesn’t need a full keel boat, I feel one should have a rugged boat with lots of dead rise and a protected rudder. But to each their own. I’d like to hear more about your crossings and your boat, I’ll look deeper for some of your vids on it. Best

@@sunlovesailing I agree comfort on a crossing is top three, fatigue can be the most dangerous to safety . Speed impresses no one as you said however the less time a crossing takes the safer you are . No matter what type of cruising a person does the reality is that we all spend more time at anchor or on the dock than we do sailing. I currently have what you would consider a No No boat for crossings 😂 I have an oceanis 40 currently and have crossed the Atlantic on her several times. I’ve seen large storms build and had no issues staying ahead of them and getting out of the way especially hurricanes and tropical storms. I rode out hurricane Irma in the keys when it made landfall as a category four hurricane. Before the storm the mooring field had 150 boats , after the storm there were three left. I am a huge advocate that the captain and crew are what make the boat safe or not safe, I advocate less time at crossing as the risk of danger is less. A good compromise in my opinion would be a larger fin keel with a skeg hung rudder, you can still Heel if needed but will be fast enough to Hopefully avoid the need to. With the advancements in weather forecasting the chances now are so much less for getting caught in large storms. Everyone will get squalls and some storms but there is such a low chance now of getting caught in multiple large continuous storms that the days of heavy full keel boats are simply not needed

@@ChasingLatitudes Agreed, the faster time one can make in a crossing the better. And while I don’t strictly adhere to the need to have a full keeled boat (I had one, it was painfully slow) they are still the safest boat to cross an ocean in. They will heave to better than any other configuration and heaving to is sailing 101 to me. It’s the safest way a boat can lay in a storm and gives the crew and boat a rest. That said, we’re sailing a Crealock 37, a long keel boat with a very large skeg, and the prop protected in an aperture. She’s a cutter rigged yawl with a tiller, my fave configuration! They have a good turn of speed and are very comfortable. Not as fast as your Oceanis that’s for sure! Hey man I’d love an Oceanis for cruising the islands, lots of room, fast, and fun, but the fact is no one out runs a Hurricane in a monohull, the person either goes the other way from the predictions... and gets lucky, or the hurricane goes the other way. And you are correct, weather forecasting has gotten very good, but it’s still fallible and the weather is very unpredictable these days as well. For me, it’s a strongly built, comfortable, known passage maker with a protected rudder. My best friend was in The Queens Birthday Storm. He taught me years ago how to fit out a voyaging boat from that perspective. I know there are other ways, but why wouldn’t I choose the absolute most safe comfortable boat I could get, fit her out as best I could, and have the confidence that she will take care of me and my crew, even if my skippering wavers. I know peeps are doing this in boats like yours, and more power to them/ you.. you’re out there doing it and that’s what counts!! But personally I would never advocate a boat with flatter hull stations, a spade rudder for serious ocean voyaging. Keep up the good work dude!! That’s amazing 😉, slips are cheap in the PNW , I’m in the Caribbean now but when I was in key west my boat slip was 1400 😳😳 I was like this is rediculous ... What are your sailing plans ? Heading south or ??

@@ChasingLatitudes Well right now here in the PNW, it's a Sales er market. I sold my Albin Vega 3 months ago, $3500. No one had the money, so down down went my price. 2 slip fee's for a year. That hurt. Anyways. Next year I want to buy a Formosa 41. Or something ketch like in the mid 50 foot range, Formosa 51 would be great. Don't get me wrong. This Ericson 41 is nice. Just not the boat I want.

You would need to understand why Kretschmer and the others previously said that. If you talk to John today that’s no longer the case, people keep holding on to this dinosaur thinking from an article back in 1986

I’ll try to find the interview for you if possible, it’s from I believe last year. Kretschmer explains that back then that was the case however now with all the advances in weather tracking and sailboats the need for that style narrow canoe is no longer needed. People seem to think they are going to turn into Shackleton and explore the world or something . Crossing the Atlantic occasionally or the pacific is different than a complete circumnavigation. All these people talking about blue water boats won’t even cross and the percentage of people who will circumnavigate is incredibly low but they think they need to purchase a boat to discover the new world or something

the designers of canoe sterns did it as a lark and almost immediately changed the design as they realised it was rubbish.

My impression of pictures/design space on the HalBerg-Rassy is that this boat designer didn't like cooking, had his meals made for him, and didn't like using the 'Head', because both are very small and designed poorly- but maybe that's just me. What do you think? (Yes, I couldn't understand my friend when he mentioned the H-R name either- guess I wasn't a knowing-sailor back then.!) - Great helpful comments on this Channel. That’s amazing , I am in the Caribbean and I have a beneteau. If your goals are sailing here and exploring the 7000 islands my suggestion would be a shallow draft beneteau, jenneau or Bavaria. Any of these can be had for less than 100k depending on size/year and if budget is lower you can pick up early 90s versions for around 30k

I don’t think anyone looking at a budget blue water sailboat would expect it to be ready to go as is at the absolute entry level price point ? That’s why they are budget boats , they will get you started and on the water for an entry level price but that by no means says it’s ready for a five year circumnavigation lol. Tartans in the 40k range can sometimes be close, close as in they will get you south down to the Caribbean and then you can kind of choose what you think from there. Lots of people think they need a so called blue water boat when they don’t . Thanks for the comments as I couldn’t agree more

Many people who search for a big bluewater sailboat dream of only 2-3 cruising areas. Instead of refitting a big old bluewater boat, if you buy a cheaper smaller newer boat where you want to sail it you may save a LOT of money. If you want to sail the med, buy a boat in the med, use it and resell. Saves the W-E atlantic hairy passage. If you want to sail the bay of islands in new zealand for a season, search in that area. Buy something simple that you can resell. Much cheaper. You will get to know those remote interesting places. Go small, go now. So true.

@@jgoitializarralde6935 couldn’t agree more, this rediculous idea of buying some old, full keel, slow, and heavy displacement sailboat. With the hopes to refit for your dreams of circumnavigation will 99% of the time result in a giant waste of time. Most sailors never cross and even less of the ones that do cross will cross once and do exactly what you said . They find an area they like and sail that area. I am in the Caribbean, we have 7000 islands and thousands of miles to explore. No reason for me to leave here for anything other than a circumnavigation

Depends on what ocean 😉 nothing surprises me when it comes to crossings . You could tell me you were going to row across the Atlantic and I would just ask you to send me pictures 🤣 storage might be an issue but depends on the actual plan. I’ve seen less cross oceans so depends on the boat and the work done to get her ready

That tells me that the beneteau first is not for crossings 🙃 you can do the occasional crossings on an oceanis but the firsts are more for speed than crossing

Hall berg Ramsey is one of the few builders who have actually improved in quality instead of the other way around. Frankly, beware of anything pre-1990

It can be a little expensive getting into sailing, there are definitely ways to find deals as long as you are patient

Yep they are, the 22 its a bit small in therms of comfort but is tough and can manage blue waters absolutely but hard to live in it for months

Those are fantastic boats just not normally budget friendly

@@nonyayet1379 you should also checkout Baltic (from Finland , like Nautor Swan) . Nowadays they only make super yachts , but they used to build anything up from 33 ft . These were always high quality light and high performance (like Swan) bluewater cruisers that were also used for regatta racing . Especially worth mentionning are the ones designed by Doug Peterson (famous designer look him up in Wiki) : 38 DP ,42 DP , 48 DP and 55 DP . Usually its someone else boat you have to worry about in hurricanes, their boat drifting into yours, the idea is to avoid hurricanes and simply move out of the way. The average hurricane only moves around 10 to 15 pmh and you have plenty of time to simply sail to a different island or area

What are you currently leaning towards? That’s more than enough of a budget. That was my budget to do very similar sailing as I just left the keys in July and I’m currently in Puerto Rico

I have a 2008 oceanis 40 two cabin owners version. I love beneteau. The only thing I would recommend thinking very very hard about is this. Once you go above 40 the cost for everything dramatically increases. Slips will be allot more at 50, anchors, sails and general maintenance is going to be tens of thousands more at 50 vs 40. The size is great but a 40 beneteau is huge. If set on bigger than 40 I’d honestly recommend a 46 and avoid the 50 due to ongoing costs. Give me a couple min and let me check the entry price on a 50 currently

So as I suspected, entry is around 160k for the 50. You could get a 40 and stay under budget, use the extra cash to upgrade🙃 just my initial thoughts

@@ChasingLatitudes hahaha yeah totally. But a lot of the prices you were quoting for entry were from really old boats. Can you actually cross oceans in those? Sorry, I have zero sailing experience and have wanted to sail around the world my whole life and am pretty limited in finances.

@@njp101 No worries, I would suggest looking at Captian Q here on RU-vid, he searches high and low for great deals, he can give you some direction on older boats that are ocean going and budget friendly. The boats he usually looks at are a bit older than even the ones I listed in these videos. It comes down to more the captain than the boat itself. Obviously a sea worth vessel is needed but making one capable to cross oceans is not that difficult if you start with the correct boat. @@ChasingLatitudes sorry it was just a general question. My goal is to circumnavigate. I've seen a lot of stuff saying to get like a 50-52 catamaran instead, would you agree with that or would something like a Bristol 40 be able to make the journey

I would do a mono over a cat for mtiple reasons, one of the biggest being running cost

@@Pulaco.Dimantag hey sorry took me so long to reply for some reason I never see these comments till much later. That’s an interesting list they put together, they can all make the crossings depending on the amount of time and effort into a refit . Some on the list I would personally not go on, not because they can’t but they would be miserable. When it comes to crossings for me I am more about comfort and safety, a 27 foot boat does not make me feel safe when I see 50 knots and waves of 30 feet. When spending weeks at sea for crossings it’s hard work and you can make it far more enjoyable by getting a more comfortable boat . This of course depends on what your personal priorities are for crossing , how many crossings you’re actually going to do and how often. I’m always open to discussion so feel free to ask as many questions as often as you like. My patron has a chat member section so I’m usually after there but I’ll answer any questions here always as well

@@zalacainbilbao I find this comment funny, more beneteau cross the Atlantic every year than any other boat , not an opinion just a fact. Look at the boats crossing currently in the 2020 arc , they are all beneteau or jenneau , couple of lagging and a handful of others. Facebook sailors and arm chair sailors put them down but more of them are cruising so

Many Beneteaus cross the Atlantic, because there are many of them built and because it's a relatively easy trip. Not so many Beneteaus can be found going round Cape Horn or sailing in the far North.

And please don’t try and tell me or use sailing UMA is your reference cause that’s just laughable. That boat was no where near blue water ready when purchased and they have since gone through about 4 different engines

@@laxmannate07 Dang, that's basically a tent with a keel. I know people do it- even smaller, but I can't imagine crossing an ocean on something that small. You really have to be a minimalist.
