This is a short video on some things to be aware of when looking to purchase a Bluewater sailboat. There is no perfect boat for everything and every sailboat will be a compromise however these are some of the things that I consider to be at the top of the list when shopping for an ocean crossing vessel. This is a re upload of a previous video I did with the audio redone and a bit more detail on the ideal size and requirements for blue water crossing. To all the new sailors on a budget who are discouraged by hearing a bluewater boat has to be this and this size. It’s only recently people became so accustomed to boats closer to 40 feet, it’s simply a social change as the economy has grown and people felt the same way about much smaller boats just a little while ago. So I’d say it’s better to go after that smaller boat and be able to buy all the necesessary equipment and have it in perfect condition than force yourself to buy a huge boat because some have grown accustomed to really big boats and can only be pleased with the latest, newest. There are some many crossing as an example, it’s simply about doing things so that the shoe fits. Most things work, you just have to make the necessary precautions, and often the main safety is a sailor who pays attention, knows the boat and plans ahead!

Good piece - I’d add some discussion of rudder types. Keel hung or skeg hung rudders are safer alternatives to exposed blade rudders, should you hit a submerged item or take a hard grounding, imho.

I would quibble on displacement. When considering displacement hull form and sail plan have to be taken into account -- they work together. That said, I'll take a Cabo Rico 38 or a Westsail 42, please.

What is the boat at 4:09? I'm new to the sailboat dream and from what I've been able to tell, like the idea of the pullman berth and forward head layout a lot more than the common v birth. The large rear cabin looks like it would be great as well, but not sure how useful it would be at sea. Loving your channel!

My ballpark hull speed is =( sqrt ( waterlength in ft)) x 1.33........bigger the faster you can get there... it's a ball park...

A 32’ blue water boat would also need a 40 knot wind to really start to get her to move. Great vids, love the content!

That was a nicely specific (40kts, 13ft waves) definition of blue water boat at the start. Is that your own definition of is there an authoritative source? Thanks for the videos.

New boats are built to a CE specification with ratings either A,B,C, or D standard. “A” being crossing oceans to “D” being lake sailing.

Which would be the ideal size for a single sailer sboat ? 38 ft or bigger would be too difficult to handle alone

I solo my 40 all the time. It’s more about how the boat is set up than it’s size for single handed sailing. Often times smaller boats are harder as their sail plan required to much constant attention and being solo that’s difficult

@@ramicigar the only thing that I really disagree with is that it seems that small boats are totally unsuitable to be used as Bluewater boats , I know he says it can be done , but it's important to bear in mind that a budget could be the main factor in if or not it is possible to sail Bluewater , Albin vegas have cruised the world for as long as anyone can remember
