The man listed as production designer (Eugen Schufftan) was actually the director of photography. Edgar Ulmer's pal couldn't get into the U.S. camera union, and couldn't take a credit. Schufften was a pioneering German special effects cameraman, who much later won the best cinematography Oscar for THE HUSTLER ('61).

And I'd have gotten away with it too if not for that pesky cravat! I loved this, John Carradine is so blooming handsome, the music was great, and the puppets were just scary!

I first stumbled upon this masterpiece while watching a UHF station in 1978 and immediately realized that despite the appalling score by Erdody it was probably John Carradine's single greatest performances as well one of Edger G. Ulmer's three best films, along with THE BLACK CAT and DETOUR. It isn't really horror since there is no supernatural element - I would use the term macabre. I do have it on dvd but the video quality is poor. Thanks so much for posting.

It's not that the music is awful, it's just that it never stops and is inappropriate for dialogue scenes. It should be in the background, not constantly in the foreground with characters trying to be heard. It does actually sound like stock music.
@wuggawuggaspritzelbo
@wuggawuggaspritzelbo 4 года назад
Yes, the fact that the score is continuous and loud contributes to a dislike of Erdody who scored so many PRC films but it's still just plain bad. There are so many grim scenes where the music is light and frolicsome like he thought this was a romantic comedy.

I love these old movies for a lot of reasons from the clothes, architecture, and the music from the era. There is one thing regarding the music that happens in a few that make it a bit tasking, and this movie though a great movie is one of them. The music is a bit over powering from time to time and messes up the dialog, a bit distracting.

The story of Bluebeard I actually know the story this should be a fun movie I've never seen it before but I heard of a story. Unlike Mickey Rooney Bluebeard is the term given to a man who marries wealthy women and does away with them The Story Goes he married six wealthy women all die by mysterious circumstances and the 7th wife found out about his crimes don't hold me to this I could be wrong

There are so many films now available, but when I see the name Ulmer I know I need to take a look. However, the pseudo-psychological "explanation" ruins it. Oh yeah, the Keystone Kops didn't help either.

Emmett Lynn (Bluebeard's ass't) was in a great many westerns, usually playing a barfly, or a drunken prospector. He had a sorta 'boneless', fluid style of movement. This is the first non-western I've seen him in. The music at 27:47, is Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition"- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BMg_A8eYweY.html

Sobressai-se neste filme o talento de Carradine para a dramaturgia. No entanto, fica patente que o argumento poderia ser melhor. Seria querer demais para os anos 40 ?

How did John Carradine get away with having long hair in his 1940's movies? Not all were period pieces, either. Nothing wrong with it, just very unique for that era.
