6:03 When I first learned that the 5th was a bit superfluous I was really confused. Wasn't it an integral part of the triad? Then I started listening closely to the harmonies created by the intervals. Listen to the root and the 5th together. They really meld in such a way that the 5th doesn't add any color. It sort of adds thickness to the sound but not color (which is why it's so great in a power chord). But dropping the 5th doesn't change the quality of the sound so you don't need it. Then if the bass player is hammering on the root you could possible drop that too. That's why the 3rd and 7th are so important to jazz.

Hence a power chord, basically what youre not supposed to do in classical music.

I have a hard time playing full chords because of my hand tremors. These 3 note chords using Key notes that identify the type of chords, are heck of a lot easier for me to play. I watched a couple of your other videos of you teaching these type of chords. Thanks for posting this! It makes playing a little easier for me.

Great lesson Corey! I know most all of this by ear but your explanation is Golden to me as I have an attention deficit of sorts; could just be laziness, I dunno but it’s also helped me to be able to play professionally since 1969. I do however understand enough theory to get the understanding of what you’re teaching. Thanks Sir!

Corey, this is great revisit lesson- your explain is terrific. I know the chord patterns but used a stab/wild guess (which does get ”luckier” with time!) and just slide up or down to the right sounding place on the neck. Yea, it’s tentative… After this, I’ll be hitting these Chords with shocking certainty! Thanks.

Thanks for the explain on the chords with the root removed. I have your course at Brett Pappa "Complete Blues 1&2" and both are great, but the idea of having chords without roots was kinda throwing me even though I've incorporated them into my playing (as my skill level at the moment allows) because they just sound so cool. I tend to over think so I came to the mental conclusion that the chord has such a strong suggestion, even without the root it works and sounds great and that's what counts. Thanks for the good work Corey.

Thanks for explaining this so thoroughly. Now I can go get Chain Lightning by Steely Dan again. Donald Fagan was breaking it down on the keyboard for a jazz pianist friend on RU-vid. Then there is the Rick Derringer solo over the 6th 9th thing. Some king of minor pentatonic with a few other notes thrown in. Oh, you are a great player. Makes it really fun to watch your lessons. Top notch.

Great lesson! Glad you talked about the “Why and What” of these chord shapes. My teacher is working with me on Fat Chord voicings...similar concept, just the bottom four strings, leaving the root note of the 1 in the bass. A la Freddie Green.
