As soon as the harp came in, I was sold. The band that kept popping into my head during the first half was The Band (with Rick Danko singing). I was less keen on the solo, which might have worked better on accordion, or the pseudo-rap, which reminded me of Bill Oddie. Gob-iron playing is all suck and blow. I recommend Sonny Boy Willamson II's "Bye Bye Bird" live in 1963. I was once told the name of the technique where you stick one end in your mouth and keep playing hands-free. The best-known wheelchair user may be Robert Wyatt, who fell out of a window while pissed. What's a poor Canadian farmboy to do? Concise answer appreciated.

How the band Minus the Bear got their name: My friend asked me how may date went. I said, you remember that show BJ and the Bear? It was like that, minus the bear. As far as singer/harmonica players go my guy is Billy Boy Arnold. He's got a nice British connection as Bowie covered his tune "I Wish You Would" on Pinups. In the late 70s he toured Europe with the British band The Groundhogs as his backing band and after the tour they recorded the album "Chicago Blues from Islington Views." It's good, man. Jon, you've mentioned you have a blues side but I don't think we've heard an example yet. Looking forward to it.

You guys really need to get a copy of the lyrics - it's absolutely a brilliant satire of pop songs and how you can sing about nothing but as long it has a catch tune and you sing it interestingly people will listen - because the hook brings you back.

Goes to show not everything crosses the pond. Couldn’t avoid hearing it on US radio in 1994. Interesting you connected this to Spin Doctors. They were popular about the same time with Spin Doctors hitting a couple years before “Hook.” And John Popper of Blues Traveler was in another band that became Spin Doctors after he left it.

I was wondering how you managed to relate this song to Abu Hamza .... I thought he is digging himself a hole here he might not get of lol Not my cup of tea this. I was thinking of the people who done the Friends theme tune for some reason....
