Love Manchester Orchestra.. they are one of the top bands of the last couple decades for me for sure, and amazing live, but MUCH heavier live, which is how I like them.
I'm so glad you guys reacted to Red House Painters! They are tragically underappreciated, and I hope you are able to check out some of Mark Kozelek's (lead singer/guitarist) other projects Sun Kil Moon, Desertshore, and under his own moniker. Fantastic reaction.
Thank you for tuning in! We really enjoyed this, and to be honest we have done a Sun Kil Moon reaction on the channel, but I didn’t recall they were both Kozelek projects. Please feel free to give it a look on our channel. Thanks again, and be well! - Andy
react to more pinegrove!!! i have a list of recommendations (from a truly diehard fan): - rings (pallet session) - & (audiotree) - the npr tiny desk concert - Recycling (acoustic at stephens institute) - The metronome (Amperland, NY) all of the amperland set is very good and on youtube as a video - Morningtime (Amperland, NY) pretty much every live performance of them that exists is well worth the listen (from someone who has probably watched 99% of them) The best albums are skylight and marigold imo. 11:11 being their worst ALL the albums are worth listening to at some point. It's funny you jest about them forming when they were 5! the lead (evan) and the drummer (zach) basically did start playing music together at around that age.
Hi It's Sam Kelly (Cymande original drummer). My cousin, Derrick Gibbs (Cymande original sax man) let me know about your show. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for checking out Cymande. Thought your analysis was on point and you had obviously done your homework. Whilst Patrick Patterson and Steve Scipio went into the legal profession, I continued on as a professional musician - been drumming now for more than 40 years. Keep up the good work.
Burt Bacharach wrote the song for Dionne Warwicke , and it has been covered many times. The Stranglers version is amazing, I've always wondered what Burt & Dion ne thought about it ? Does anyone know?
My joy of being a John Mayer fan is his many music incarnations. The man is super talented, very intelligent and yes ' ballsy'. The trio was a revelation for me at the time and such a clever move to show his fans who else he really was. And the progression to Dead and Company has allowed John to keep progressing his skills on 'that there' guitar. I can honestly say Ive loved everything he's done whatever the genre and it's because of his skill with the guitar.
I’ve tried and just can’t get into this band and this song didn’t change that. I will say their cover of The Cars All Mixed Up is one of my favorites covers of all time. I have listened to many of the Bon Scott covers and I agree with Jon some work , some don’t.
If you enjoyed this, you're going to want to check out Mark Kozelek's next project Sun Kil Moon. Particularly the releases Ghost Of The Great Highway and April. Speaking off your spot on Neil Young connection, Mark and band mates go full Crazy Horse on the song Tonight The Sky from April.
Thanks for giving this a view and for your comment! We also covered one of Sun Kil Moon's tracks on this channel. Please give it a look if you're interested. - Andy
It hurts when I hear all the songs to Maria, when we haven’t really done with J or K. I didn't know whether they were going to be over yonder or a bunch of Commies - but like Andy, I immediately thought of early- mid-70s Neil Young, both voice and geetar - specifically Long May You Run or Helpless. There ain't nothing wrong with a well-aimed extended noodle, and this song definitely didn't outstay its welcome. Obviously nothing to do with the Old West outlaw known as The Brown Paper Kid (they finally got him for rustling).
this has one of the most creative, yet simple uses of the saxophone I've ever heard. LeRoi stated he was imitating an elephant walking, trunk swaying side to side.
You should do "No Sympathy". Probably my favourite song of theirs. There's so much greatness to choose from them though. Any given song you pick will be wonderful, but individually doesn't do justice to the scope of their oeuvre.
Thanks Ian - added to the list. My favourite is probably 'If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You', but as you say there's so many fantastic tracks. Cheers, Jon.
I have a feeling there might have been a Doves songs I knew once upon a time, but have completely forgotten what it is. Shame on me, 'cos I really liked this song.
Thanks for selecting this one, Andy. Jon, as you were describing what you were listening to it reinforced my belief that I don't hear music the same as everyone else - being deaf in one ear means I can't filter the sounds as well as stereo listeners. That's always been fascinating to me. I love the fiddle and guitar in this and Edwards' voice. And I love the bid 'whoop' in the middle of it - don't know why, I just do. I like that the sound is messy. I figure it's because all 8 members want to contribute something somewhere in the song. Anyway, I'm more familiar with the remixed version but this one sounded pretty good. Also, Andy, just so you know, being a cisgendered woman, my pronouns are she/her - not that I expected you to know that from my handle - which, btw is supposed to be all one word - tin-took-ee. Catch you next time!
Tin, apologies, for mistaking your gender based on your youtube handle and assumption. I think our gender stats on the channel is something like 99% male to 1% female, so I totally assumed the math was on my side, but that isn't fair, so thank you for clearing that up for me. Also, thank you for being part of the 1%. You are a great member of our community here--thanks again! - Andy 🙂
Interesting sounds and great musicianship but it was a bit of a blur for some reason. Maybe because of the Chaka Khan Jon intro. Chaka Khan OY VEY Chaka Khan! Andy get on a plane immediately and do a welfare check on your guy. Seriously Andy how about Kaiser Chiefs Everyday I love you less and less for a reaction. Thought if you haven't heard you might like.
I was slightly familiar with them, then heard Black and White town and was hooked , great album! A song to add to your list Human Sexual Response- Land of the Glass Pine Cones
I return to Penguin Cafe Orchestra again and again. Tracks like 'Beanfields', 'Music for a Found Harmonium' and 'Air À Danser' still thrill me after thirty years of listening.
Great track, I do prefer The Last Broadcast album though. They are one of the loudest live bands I've heard. They usually encore with the Sub Sub song Spaceface
One time ago a crazy dream came to me. Why a Mancunian estate dweller when the band is surely named after a luxury residential development? though I agree that the singer does look as if he has a second career nicking lead off roofs. I agree that getting your jigger out deserves more than a financial penalty. You never see actual bottlenecks these days (except at Capel Curig), but they're dead easy to make. (1) Buy a fifth of wine, chosen for the shape of the neck rather then the contents. (2) Drink the contents, to avoid waste. (3) Tie a piece of string around the base of the neck, soak it in industrial alcohol, and set light to it. (3) Tap the top sharply against the stoop to break the neck off at the new line of weakness. (4) Grind the rough edge down on the stoop. (5) If it fits over your 4th or 5th (or if you're Hound Dog Taylor, 6th) finger, play. If it doesn't, repeat steps (1)-(4).
so glad you guys enjoyed it!! one of my favorite discoveries of this year, thought it might be up your street. cackled at the paul simon reference. beautiful words as always <3
I got to see Ben(Bearded Singer) doing an acoustic one man acoustic rendition of the Bring it On album. It was in my local arts centre, small intimate gig, probably less than 100 in there. Such an amazing performance!!! The first 2 Albums of theirs are pure gold. Saw them back in the day at Glasto 99, another epic performance. They are proper muso's I love how they all switch instruments and roles for different songs.
This is awesome! I’ve been a huge fan of these guys for decades now. I’m gonna pass this along to Bill (the guy who sings lead and handles the lead guitar on this as well). I think this would him pretty happy! Thanks for putting this out there!
If you go to a Frank Turner show 99 per cent of the audience have seen him before. I've seen him 6 or 7 times. Everyone knows what parts of the song to sing along with. It is a fun show. One of my first suggestions on your channel was an early, not very well known song of his called Once We Were Anarchists. When he first started out he got a lot of comparisons to Billy Bragg. At his Wembley show in 2012 Billy Bragg was one of the back up bands. A couple of other favourites are Reasons Not To Be An Idiot and the one he always ends his shows with (mind you I haven't seen him in about 5 years) Photosynthesis. I enjoyed this one guys. Take care.
I'm surprised that Jon was unaware of the admirable Frank Turner - evidence along with George Orwell that not everyone "educated" at Eton is a stain on the underpants of humanity. This tune sounded very Irish to me, with that characteristic mixture of jig and march. Compare e.g. Sally MacLennane or Johnny I hardly Knew Ye (one of those songs which crossed The Pond and acquired different words). I was expecting some penny whistle. (UK only) - This is the way the world ends, not with a banger but a Wimpy. King Cnut the Frequently-Misspelt was the other English king titled The Great. Back in the day (late 60s), the well-dressed protestor wore cycling gear and carried a bag of shopping. You could plead innocence if arrested, the helmet protected against truncheon blows, and you can get a fair old distance on a potato. Power in the darkness, frightening lies from the other side, power in the darkness, stand up and fight for your rights (a song I've already recommended).
@@andrewbranch700 UK Wimpy bars were...not good. On that note, I knew a guy who was barred from a pub for asking for an extra sachet of grease for his burger. (We still have the near-fiction that pubs are private homes, so their rules or you're out.) Tuning in, ok. At my age, turning on and dropping out, less so.
I love gomez. I agree with everything john said. Never understood why they weren't bigger and I felt no one else quite sounded like them at that time. Incredibly entertaining live band seen them many times. Great musicians. I wish there was more good video out there that captured their live energy. Ian ball and Ben have toured the us the last few years with some guitars and a laptop. Still great. I plan to see them again this winter.
Never really gave Gomez a proper listen, will have to give that album a try. Just read that the BBC recorded a Nick Drake prom which will be broadcast later this year. Can I suggest the Trashcan Sinatras track Weightlifting for you to try.
Listened to the audio version of the Nick Drake Prom last night on the BBC Sounds website. Beautiful. Disappointed we have to wait to view it. Cheers, Jon.
Was Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass a lady? it seems unlikely. Good stuff. The ambiance immediately reminded me of "Ocean" off _VU_ The percussionist impressed me as well. TBA are particularly glib. They do two sets and then take requests. "Play one the drummer knows."
