The basic metabolic panel (BMP), also known as the Chem7 or simply as a serum electrolyte panel, is a set of laboratory values commonly measured in patients. These lab values are usually presented in a fishbone diagram or chart. Sodium (Na+) is placed on the top left, with Potassium (K+) below. Immediately right is Chloride (Cl-) on top, with Bicarbonate (HCO3-) below. In the next column is blood urea nitrogen (BUN), with Creatinine (Cr) below. On the far right, we find glucose (Glc), more commonly known as blood sugar.
Normal values for the BMP or Chem7 are as follows:
Sodium (Na+): 136-145 mEq/L
Potassium (K+): 3.5-5.0 mEq/L
Chloride (Cl-): 95-105 mEq/L
Bicarbonate (HCO3-): 22-28 mEq/L
Blood urea nitrogen (BUN): 7-18 mg/dL
Creatinine (Cr): 0.6-1.2 mg/dL
Glucose (Glc): 70-110 mg/dL
