I have to say Mateo is my authority when it comes to BMPCC. If you want to save time and money, learn from him, the rest is a matter of your skills. I keep my fingers crossed for Mateo's career!
I keep watching contents like this despite that I'm still rocking my Canon 80D with Canon FD 28 f2.8 lens with Pancake 24mm lens. I'm optimistic to one day get a Blackmagic pocket 4K or 6K as I keep improving my craft. 🥰
@LILAQUATH it has more noise up until 12.8k where NR kicks in and the footage gets mushy, but who needs that kind of iso on average anyway? What features outside of autofocus?
You are right. The fact that this type of camera is available at that price is a dream come true. For people wanting to own a cinema camera, and that does not have the money other manufactures are asking for and have been asking for for years, it is finally possible for me to follow my dream while owning my own cinema camera. And it is not only the price, it is one of the most organic pictures I have seen in any camera available to the consumer. Braw does not add anything, it is stunning. And thankfully it does not have autofocus and stabilizing features as some people misunderstanding this camera is missing. Seeing red footage and now the new fx6 footage after spending time with the braw from the 6k, it becomes so obvious the tons of artificial processing going on in those cameras. As you said, it might not have everything on every part. But to this price, it has way more than everything. Thank you blackmagic.
I bought me a pocket 6k almost a month ago and this camera is just amazing, the low light capabilities is a beast from my perspective, im so happy with this camera, if you a filmmaker and this baby on your list
Great video! I think the title isn’t quite what you want it to mean. “The best money can buy” means that even if you had unlimited money, you’d still buy this one. It’s clear in your video that you still think the Arri is better. So I think you mean that the Pocket 6K is “The best camera for the money,” meaning that at its price, there is no better camera.
I’m a film student, and I’ve currently got $200 in my bank account, but I think that when the day comes, this might be my first camera over the BMPCC4K. The camera itself is $2700 here in Norway, so I might have to wait a while, but we’ll see.
@@whengrapespop5728 If you want a BMPC youll need £5K for lenses and mics etc. If you want it that bad your tail off cleaning and carrying . Filmmaking takes commitment so get some practice now
@@Mr_Kenneth Oh, I’m committed. I’m working 9-11 hours a day on our projects, and just heard I’m getting top grades. I’m not expecting to get the camera, lens or mic I want, but I do know which ones I need to be able to do what I wish I could in the start of my career (and yes, I do know you can be a filmmaker with just a mobile phone, but realistically you won’t be able to get contacts and “go out there” with just a phone). I’m also oriented around the costs - not only the cost of the equipment, but the investment I need to make to be the filmmaker I want to be. Unfortunately, I currently don’t have the finances I need to finish my education, so this is my top priority at the moment. Can’t get a job, because this education requires availability any day of the week (especially now that COVID-19 is restricting everything and causing a lot of problems). On top of this, my sister is getting married in the US the month after the semester is finished, which means I would have to choose between being at my sister’s wedding or finishing my education, as I don’t have the money to do both (I currently don’t have the money to do either one). I need divine intervention.
Completely agree. I had been shooting interiors with a RED Dragon-X for a while, and decided to jump on Komodo when it was announced to have a more reasonably sized rig. Since Komodo wasn;t yet available I picked up a Pocket 6K in the interim, fully intending to repurpose it as a studio cam once Komodo became available. But, now that Ive been using the Pocket 6K for a couple months I like it so much that it has effectively replaced my Dragon for 90% of what I shoot, the exception being locked off talking heads and/or high framerate. The Pocket 6K is ridiculously good. If it had a good autofocus and wasn't shaped like a sideways football there would be almost zero reason to buy anything else short of the big boy cine cams.
@@matteobertoli Really great camera. I've also enjoyed it a lot. Check my most recent M/V on it, leme know what you think: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1t9jEuW4WR0.html
the pocket 6k and your buttery luts is a match made in heaven. if I didn't already have the gh5s I would get a pocket 6k. you've sold the camera to me lol
Appreciate your thoughtful insights and you've taught me a lot about my bmpcc6k! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and journey with this camera & cinematography!
I love seeing reviews AFTER someone has actually worked in the field with the product. The only thing I can say I am bummed about is that they dropped the price by $500 when the camera was only out for roughly a year then released the pro at the original 6k pricepoint with features the first one should have had. Not sure if they rushed the release of the first 6k but an articulating screen, higher nit screen brightness and built-in ND filters have been requested for years. They knew we wanted those features. They really kind of punished their real supporters by doing that as we bought in then got egg on our face. I'm still a die-hard fan of BM though... that just sucks.
I remember seeing those shots from the wine cellar with that beautiful lighting but this is the first time I saw the rig you were using. A short slider on a tripod. Simple, but the effect is absolutely stunning!
Stand by your comments 100%! Been using the P6k with a set of Leica R's and anamorphic glass for many projects and it can't be beat for the price and look. Now testing all that glass on a Panasonic S5. Have you done any side by side comparisons with an S5 yourself? Props to your tests with the a7siii.
according to their graph its rated at 13.5 stops. Slightly better than the Pocket 4K. but its cool that both you and him agree its near the 14 to 15 stop range.
Man you just saved me from days of worrying about whether I should get the 6k pro. It's crazy how affordable it is. With the same budget I would've spent on an A7S3 or FX3, I could rig a 6k Pro out to the max, and still get lights and a bunch of other gear! Watching your videos on how you use this camera has been a game changer for me.
I completely agree! I did a side-by-side with the 4K and 6K right when it shipped, and the colors were MUCH better on the 6K, less green and an overall sharper image because I didn't have a speed booster in front of my sensor. Thanks for the video!
Sony confirmed. No dual native ISO in 12800. Their claim is that the 'base' ISO which is apparently different from Native ISO sits at 12800. Just like the first generation A7s had a base ISO of 3200 even though 1600 ISO in other profiles produced less noise. As a result, the noise reduction software kicks in at 12800 and this ISO being the 'base' ISO value, the software resolves the noise better at 12800 than at say 10,000 ISO or 6400 ISO. So not dual native ISO but really efficient noise reduction which is possible only with 'base' ISO... whatever that means. Also I agree, wether people deny it or not, I've tested in natural window light, and both my 4K and 6Ks definitely have a slight difference in the skintones (the subject was light skinned asian). Although I prefer the tones with the 4K more. But just a matter of preference.
If it’s only noise reduction that is seriously troubling cause that means there is a lot of processing going on in the camera. Definitely not a good thing. Thanks for the heads up!
My man! 100% agree. Love my pocket 6k. I'm curious, are you planning on making a video about the Komodo anytime soon? I haven't seen anyone do a solid comparison between the pocket 6k and Komodo yet, and if there's anyone that can do that comparison justice it'd be you. I just ordered the Komodo to shoot along side my pocket 6k mainly because my clients are of course obsessed with Red, and that cube form factor is beautiful, but I honestly don't know what to expect from the Komodo till I really get to shoot with it for a while.
Love your take always on the 6K and 4K Matteo! Been using the Ursa Mini G2 mostly for my commercial work. Planning to buy it next year or alternatively the 6K (third option would be the FX6 mainly for benefits of renting it out and that S-Cinetone). My main gripe with the 6K is the lack of ND and the form factor as you said.
@@BrianArtka well obviously lol but that extra time it takes to take off or swing the mattebox to change lens or put extra ND on (unless you have a variable which tends to not be standard on cinema productions), in-built will save you minutes every day. And there just super convenient!
Literally bought a 6k last week based off your videos and Spenser Sakurai's. I'm pretty sure blackMagic's next move would be a cubic RF full frame camera that'd be around 4000~5000$. Actually, the crop factor isn't that bad, you just have to get slightly wider lenses, which I don't mind personally.
Hi Matteo, as a documentary filmmaker I am considering to go for the Panasonic S5. Have you tested that camera? To me 10bit is enough. As always, thank you very much for your content. I am happy I found your channel, with some other few guy you bring true pro content. Not just "how to make swooshy transitions" and crap like that...
Great video. Totally agree. I have de 4k, 6k and just got a A7sIII last week. The pocket 6k gave me texture and color like no camera before at this price point. I used your natural luts on my last project, I’m from Brazil we exchanged couple e-mails with you tô send me the GEN5 lut update.
Love your videos mate. You rock.. I still film with my Canon 550D and 28mm f2 vintage lens. I hope my next purchase gonna be BMPCC6k. Thanks for content!
I don't know an M43 to EF speedbooster gives you just as many lens options as a native EF camera. Plus you can use $10 dummy adapters or $100 speedboosters to mount any lens available. But yeah the P6K image is a league above the P4K in terms of latitude and color.
Not really. I could not use my EF Leica with the ef speedbooster for example. The problem with regular adapter is that you’ll have a 2x crop, which is very hard to work with.
i lucked up and got a black magic 6k for $1500 bucks folks unfortunately are selling gear due to covid keep your eyes out there are deals out there, thanks for video Mateo you saved from getting the g2 i think i got a way better deal at 1500!
Is this a good "starter" camera for someone who wants to make nice high quality 4k videos and maybe streaming eventually? What lense size should someone get to start out with?
I think absolutely yes, and for a lens, I would just go for something fairly cheap and wide and a zoom lens probably so that you can experiment with the different lens lengths.
Best camera money can buy for what it can do for professionals* 2000 for just a body with out lens, memory cards, accessories, mic etc is e pensive. For professionals or business owners it’s a bargain and the best VALUE for its abilities and quality Excellent video though. I love the content. Would love one with a flip out screen
Shot a music video with this camera. I had the juicebox battery and two camera batteries that lasted close to five hours. I used Delkin 1 TB Jugglers that gave me 6k 50p for hours on end, in the hot summer sun, with no overheating issues. I have a monitor but didn't use it as I was able to use the in camera one, leaving just the battery, ssd, and camera on a tripod. Easy to move and light on me feet all day. You don't need massive accessories if you don't want them, just modify as needed. Ditto to Matteo on the dynamic range, Videomaker found well over 13 without a lut applied (www.videomaker.com/reviews/cameras/blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-6k-first-look/) and shot an actual Xyla chart that you can see with your eyes, not a graph full of numbers based on a predetermined algorithm that I've seen elsewhere. I grew up in the days of 8mm video, so having these capabilities is almost unthinkable.
Honestly I thought this was gonna be a game changing camera but I must be doing something wrong. Every iso setting I have it on it is super noisy, as well as custom white balance settings. So it’s been sitting in a box cause I got sick of it. The most noise I’ve ever seen in a camera.... any tips ..?
to edit 6k raw, is easy BUT to add effects to that 6k raw is a wholleeeeeee different shit...my pc couldn't handle the effect I added to one of the projects that I was working on so I had to cut those effects out...so to edit 6k raw, what ever bit rate is easy BUT to add effects to it, that's something else
Effects for me it’s exactly the same with 1080 h264 files. Film grain or deflicker in davinci it’s gonna destroy my computer no matter what files I put it into it.
In many of these clips I prefer the look of the 6k over the Alexa---in any case they're so close in look adjustments will be easy. Pocket 6k pro---color science of the new gen 5 color science: the BOMB!
Hey bro! Great video. Just picked up a 6k! Would you use the bmpcc4k as a B cam to the 6k? I'm thinking of holding on to my 4k for B cam and maybe to leave it on a gimbal while I'm shooting with the 6k. Thanks!
couldn't agree more, very honest opinions, not like all other "famous" youtubers that chasing new cameras like crazy, nor like sony/red fans that believe everything came out from their camera is the "best" without think. The pocket 6k video quality is so close to allexa mini, and such llow price is a loud slap on every other video camera's face when they claim their camera really worth the price tag.
Damn Matteo, you made me move to pocket4k & canon fds, then you moved to 6k when I saved up for my 4k lol... now after watching this video, i want to get a 6k but it will come for sure ;) been working day and night even with covid in the way, for now I invested heavily in audio and got a sigma 18-35 for some corporate work..and sadly in my country its around 2800usd :( even from the official bm reseller here...pff\ Thanks for inspiring people like me that gear & af is not everything and keep creating ;)
Great Video. I have a question. Does your camera ever have problems recognizing an SD drive? I've bought TWO from the list of approved drives and the camera does not recognize them. Any suggestions? (I've already tried turning it on/ off, re-starting it, changing cables, rebooting the entire camera, etc.)
I have been shooting during the last month with my p4k in lot of different scenarios and even that i am not a big fan of the metabones system i have to say that this combination helped me in lot of tight locations where my tokina 11-16 literally saved my day after not use this lens since 6 to 8 months ago. But i asked myself i would like to rid out of this to my run and gun doc style but what will be the widest solution you recommend use with the p6k? it is the only downside i have seen for my type of work to be honest
I agree with you 300%. Did you see JSFILMZ's comparison with the A7SIII ? The dynamic range test is especially very strange, as it seems like the BMPCC 6K has the same, or maybe even more dynamic range than the A7SIII. Which is quite surprising, since Sony claim that the A7SIII has 15 stops of DR. I know most companies (especially in the consumer/pro-sumer territory) lie about their actual dynamic range, but this time it's not acceptable lol. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZxdvEL7ZLQ0.html Dynamic Range TEST @ 4:04
@@matteobertoli🤣 Total non-sense! I can ''tolerate'' when they say 13 stops, but it's in fact around 12.5 or so, but lying about over 2 stops... this is completely ridiculous (especially when people pay $3500 for a camera body). I don't think Ron Jeremy lied about the size of his dick when he first wanted to make porn, cause these things can be easily measured you know! 😁
Appreciate the info you share bro, I have used your Natural Rec 709 LUT, its good but I think we are lacking a video of how to use your LUT in Premiere, I am not sure if I am the only premiere person here but, 1st time I used the Natural LUT I was not sure if I would have to use it as an input LUT or Creative LUT [Looks] in the Lumetri panel and either of each yield different results. This takes me to the Master Collection LUTS on your site, are they meant to be used as Looks [Creative LUTS] in premiere or input LUTS, I really wanna get them because I have not been disappointed with the Natural Rec 709 LUT, but I thought I would ask before I make any move. I totally do understand and respect the fact that your day to day work flow is Da Vinci as I have noticed, but I think some of us your fans would like to hear the premiere pro version of your amazing LUTS. Thanks.
Hey man and thank you! I think you should be able to find that information online since it’s a general question about all LUTs and not exclusively the BUTTERY. Unfortunately I do not use Premiere, but I’m sure there are plenty of information if you Google: how to apply LUTs in Premiere Pro or where to apply LUTs in Premiere Pro or input LUTs vs creative LUTs. For sure that creative LUTs thing is not related to our creative collection. You should apply the creative in the same way you apply the Natural. Hope it helps!
Hi Matteo. I’m going back and forth between the BMPCC 4K and 6K. I hear the fans on the 6 K can be loud and cause audio problems on close ups especially. Are the fans intermittent or are they constantly running? Also, have you ran into any audio problems with the fans being heard on a shoot? Thanks
I'm having wiggle room on my Leica R to Viltrox which is making my Nucleus Nano follow focus unsuable. Surprisingly it doesn't seem to be the wiggle from the Viltrox to the adapter, it's the wiggle room of the R mount to the front of the Viltrox. The amount of play is more than enough to just make the Nano's motors spin forever without getting any traction. Not sure how to fix it beyond trying a million other tiny Leica R to EF adapters. Do you think I'll encounter the same issue on the 6k? And which Leica R to EF adapter are you using? I'm using Elefoto. Love your vids, thanks~
I said it before (on the screencap you posted a while ago) and I'll say it again, beautiful composition Matteo! this video looked very very visually pleasing and I agree with everything you said about the P6K but you mentioned the crop factor, even though you don't like to work with speedboosters anymore, which is something I've heard from some P4K users, the use of a speedbooster on the P4K gives you a reduced crop factor so I see that as an advantage, anyways I still aspire to get a P4K because of the cheaper price, my budget is not that high :'( but we'll see ...
Thanks! That is true and works fine if you always use the same lens, but if for some reason you wanna use anything else one day, you still need to get a speedbooster for that particular lens. Still, the Pocket 4K is amazing as well!
I still have some buyers remorse given that I owned the 6K, but ended up taking it back for the 4K. A lot went into that decision, and the ability to adapt vintage lenses and keep a smaller overall form factor were the biggest deciding factors for me personally. The 6K really is incredible, I cannot wait to see what Black Magic does with their next iteration.
@@niqvuk you can it’s just EF is not as adaptable of a mount as L Mount is. L Mount has a longer flange distance from mount to sensor which allows more room to adapt different types of lenses.
Thanks, for the great video Matteo! I really want to buy this camera but I fear, that the moment I buy it Black Magic will come out with a new one... New form factor, or even full frame? Lots of speculations... What do you think?
Your quality videos confirmed my interest in BMPCC-4K and your choice of working with Leica-R lenses convinced me 100%. As you say, the 35mm f2 produces pure magic. Thanks for your great work.
Thanks for the video Matteo! I've been casually watching them off and on ever since switching to the Blackmagic workflow last Summer and finding your Buttery LUTs collection(and using only them for all my work). Love the one thing you mention in this one, and that is about the workflow of this ecosystem. I honestly can't, and don't want to switch to any other camera out right now because using these cams(G2, 6k, and 4k for me) and Resolve with BRAW, is so smooth. I concentrate on short/micro-doc work and came from Canon C100s/c200s and got the 4k, then G2, and wont go back. The ecosystem, the workflow, the image, the software UI, completely changed how I capture and edit my projects. Not to mention how frequently Blackmagic releases updates on firmware and Resolve. I'm a convert, but it goes beyond that, because at the end of the day, my clients don't really give two sh*ts about the software and gear, its the end product, and these tools allow me to give them a better one than they were getting before.
I have a bonus coming in feb and I'm thinking of getting it! Will be coming from a Panasonic G7 and been practicing heavily on lighting trying to get the most out of it. Right now all I'm doing is researching online for parts and rigging out something I don't have and its killing me lol
Ciao Matteo!
